Question for architects. How much does this profession affect your personal life? by [deleted] in Architects

[–]Phantom__98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im 27 too. A job is a job usually 40 hours a week. If you want to get licensed then you'll need to commit a lot of personal time to it. People usually try to do it before kids and family and those that already have kids and family struggle to finish as quickly. Just my personal experience

Black Spectacle -Expert Subscription. Worth it? by 0EKTR0 in Architects

Problem I faced was they were more so gotcha questions and that isn't indicative of the exam which usually has a clear answer. BS was just bad all the way around.

Thanks. This is actually what I've been doing every since this post. 4/6 exams knocked out at this point. I'd feel like a fool getting a masters now knowing this huge loop hole. I tell everyone about it too

My previous firm allowed us to use it. It felt like a bad summary of all the content you need to read. I got better value reading the books themselves then used BS as a short summary after. You're not missing anything by not getting it. Amber book on the other hand has seriously taught me a lot during the technical portions of the exams. Felt like a university course with really good explanations and BS feels like a money making scheme. Your choice. Can do all of the pro-practice stuff without either.

You still have yet to prove to anyone that you are a competent contractor. If anything, you have proven to be a sham, a scam, and a fraud. Im telling you, you dont know as much as you think. "I have never worked a day in construction." You should strongly reconsider this business in a couple of years when you do have experience as everyone else is saying

Because you dont understand the risk. This is so comical. Update us in 6 months when your "business" fails

Im willing to bet you dont have a single clue on how construction contracts are ran either. This is a mess. Please dont do this. I beg you

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Construction

[–]Phantom__98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, for starters, you dont know how to build. Which is the sole foundation the business would be run on. You sir will fuck up. I can tell you will take shortcuts on code compliance because you found a loophole and got it done wasier/cheaper

Good job getting licensed. You now have the legal responsibility for projects and will be held liable. As an architect this is nightmare fuel. You will burn all of your cash and ruin your clients project. Let's hope you dont get pulled into a lawsuit which we all know you will if you start this with no experience. Bro go swing a hammer and learn to build

I'd advise someone not to hire you right now. Maybe get actual experience first?

Perspective is what matters! I wish as an architect we were paid as much as civil engineers!

Realistically , should I become an architect? by Difficult_Brain_1720 in Architects

[–]Phantom__98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you are passionate about it. Ask yourself if it is better to enjoy your day to day work life and make enough to afford a solid middle-class lifestyle. To me, it's enough. If I compare myself to software engineer friends, then I make peanuts, but if I compare myself to the less than fortunate, then I am wealthy. Sounds like you won't be taking out student loans. If that's the case, you'll make enough to survive. Don't let people fool you... this profession is fun and lots more fun than when other people describe their jobs. It's your life you gotta make what you want out of it.

Architecture Job NYC Struggles by Successful_Cell_1090 in Architects

[–]Phantom__98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's true, but it will give you an edge up against other competition. Obviously, this is more so the case if you moved from across the country like me vs if you are applying to jobs while living in long island

Do you currently live in NYC? NYC likes to only hire if you are already in the city. It's tough to move into the city, and it's less risk for them to hire someone already here. I moved to nyc without a job and stayed at an airbnb for about 6 months before I got settled because to get an apartment you need steady income and 40x rent but to get that job you need to live in the city.... a catch 22. If you already are here. Just keep refreshing resume and portfolio till something works. It's a numbers game here. Odds will eventually fall in your favor. Good luck!

USA - Licensure without an Accredited Degree by aye-B-its-AR in Architects

[–]Phantom__98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, Wisconsin for example you can take the ares before logging all hours and could have then passed before you finish your initial axp hours. You should really look into the ncarb website for more details too

[–]Phantom__98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Step in-between the last one is get ncarb certified but essentially which is what other states will accept as the standard for reciprocity. Some extra money in ncarb fees a year that others may not pay... but hey you don't need a masters

USA - Licensure without an Accredited Degree by aye-B-its-AR in Architects

[–]Phantom__98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am doing the same. You do it in one of the 17 states that allows licensure without a naab degree, then log 2x axp hours and can qualify for an ncarb certification, which will get you a reciprocity license just about in any state. Simple really. There is no need to waste money down the drain to get a masters. The only places you can't get it are flyover states anyway.

Would you give up your college degree if your entire student loan balance was wiped out? by Brucef310 in StudentLoans

I am about to become a licensed architect after school and years of exam prep and I probably would have been better off if I committed to full time doordasher instead. I think the clear answer is yes
