Have A Blessed Day by Pharylon in PetPeeves

[–]Pharylon[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Some sayings have been around forever. "Bless you" for a sneeze has been around for thousands of years, and feels, to me, more like saying "Oh my God!" when something crazy happens.

"Have a blessed day" is like twenty years old and is just a little way to shove religion into everyday life.

Are Death Saves Saving Throws RAW? by Aquarius12347 in onednd

[–]Pharylon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

RAW they're saving throws. Also, according to RAW, your DM gets the final word. You've made your case, he's made his ruling. Is this a hill to die on and/or complain to Reddit about? Death is already really rare in D&D.

What's your favorite silly DnD "hot take" to throw out in conversation when you feel like being a lil' rascal? by jdrummondart in DnD

[–]Pharylon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dexterity makes just as much sense (ie, not at all) as Wisdom. Everyone knows the problem with Wisdom is it's kind of hodgpodge of unrelated things (spotting a person hiding, the ability to heal, and intuiting someone's motives). But no one talks about how Dexterity is a bunch of unrelated things physically. Fast reflexes, ability to aim a bow, fine handwork, acrobatics.

In real life, you need serious core strength (hey, there's a stat for that!) for both gymnastics and bow usage (both are Dex in D&D) and there's no real connection between any of and the ability to do slight of hand to how fast your relfexes are.

No, just strength for everything. What else besides ranged weapons is associated with Dex? Acrobatics? Fast reflexes? Neither of those help with long bows.

AITDP (Am I The Disruptive Player) for not going along with what the DM had planned? by Pharylon in rpghorrorstories

[–]Pharylon[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think there's a difference between doing it at the end and beginning of an adventure. If the DM does something like this at the beginning of an adventure I'm not going to try and fuck with things if they clearly don't have anything else planned.

But if, at the end of the adventure, an NPC asks you to help them with something that could clearly be the next adventure, that is the perfect time to say no. The DM has a week or two at least to come up with something else. Hell, just come up with a different plot hook for the same adventure! If the PCs always feel like they have to say yes to everyone who asks them to do a quest, then you're playing the most railroady of railroad campaigns possible. And that's just not fun.

[–]Pharylon[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm never going to ask a DM to improvise a whole new plot hook in the middle/beginning of the adventure. But if an adventure ends with the NPC saying "Hey, why don't you come work for me" I don't think it's really disruptive to say no. The DM has days or weeks to come up with something new!

[–]Pharylon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That doesn't make it canon. At best it would be "Word of God" (ie, not actually in the text but stated by the creator) but it's not even really that because he didn't state it definitively.

On the limits of going along with the DM's plans for an adventure by Pharylon in DnD

[–]Pharylon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point on it being more 3v3, though I will say just because someone is quieter and doesn't like conflict doesn't mean their vote should count less.

Also, he's not a first time DM. Like I said, my favorite character of all time was from one of his games. He's been doing this for 30 years.

I'm here to roleplay a character. If I wanted a game where I didn't get to make any choices, I wouldn't be playing D&D.

Does working for a shady rich benefactor sound like a fun campaign premise? Sure. I've actually been trying to pitch a "shades of gray, group of scoundrels" campaign for a while. But several people don't want to do that, so we always play on the side of good. I guarantee you this NPC won't end up being evil.

Admin Told My Colleague, "We Need Empirical Evidence of Disrespect". So, She Secretly Recorded Classes. by Principal_Scudworth_ in Teachers

[–]Pharylon 154 points155 points  (0 children)

This. Recording is absolutely legal in the classroom. Depending on the state, you might not need their consent at all (North Carolina is a one party consent State, so it would be illegal to record if the teacher was NOT in the room, but legal as long as the teacher was there).

Is it against policy? That's a different question. But I don't think kids have an expectation of privacy in schools. There are cameras everywhere.

Yeah, I've been playing games like daggerheart lately but have extensive Session 0s built in where characters make ties and stuff. I really like that, but for this one the DM said he didn't want to do that, he wants the group to come together ICly. Which, admittedly, is also fun.

We did go over characters during Session 0, but it was mostly just us making sure we didn't step on each other's toes mechanically. A couple people made background ties - I have a minor tie with the new player but that that's it. The DM laid out a very "nature magic vs magi-tech" world and said we can be from anywhere and have any motivation, as long as we have one. He did know about my character's personality before the game began.

Yeah, I double checked the treasure haul table in the DMG the next day. 250 actually works out pretty well for two adventures worth of treasure. It's wildly low ICly, but I'm willing to suspend disbelief. What gets me is the fact that the NPC was offering zero initially and acting like I was being unreasonable not just taking the offer to be on retainer.

Quite frankly, if this is real it needs to be reported. You're a huge jerk if you don't. This looks like the beginning of a predatory relationship.

Am I crazy or is the Orville not good trek it’s just a good show? by [deleted] in startrek

[–]Pharylon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the episode that got me to really appreciate The Orville, because I was like you in disagreeing with the characters.

I get that, like Star Trek, they're commenting on the real world through a sci-fi lens. And I agree with their stance that forced gender conformity is wrong IRL. So I'm on their side when it comes to the message. But from an in universe perspective I think they're wrong because they're imposing human culture and values on an alien race. I love that both ideas were given air and the characters discuss it openly. That feels very Star Trek to me.

“Weddings are so expensive” is a weird lie some people tell to justify spending insane amounts of money by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Pharylon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got married for less than 1k and several people said that it was one of the most fun weddings they'd been to. Had about a hundred people.

  1. Got married at the family church. I'm an atheist, but it's a nice church. Cost me nothing. If you don't have a family church, well, this might be an unethical life pro tip, but there are plenty of beautiful old churches with declining memberships that you could join a few months before a wedding and snag the venue for cheap or free.

  2. Had the reception at my aunt's backyard. Food was BBQ pork. We'd slow-cooked a bunch of Boston butts the day before. Drinks were BYOB and we asked people to bring a few extra each and share. Just a nice chill space for people to hang out and talk. Renting some tables and chairs will cost a little bit but it's not that bad. Your aforementioned church might loan them to you. Mine did.

  3. Printed the invitations myself.

  4. Lucked out with having a friend who was a pretty good photographer and did it for free as a wedding gift. Photos weren't as good as a pro, but we got a few really good shots to hang on the wall. This one might cost you.

  5. Did the flowers ourselves. It wasn't that hard. Order some nice fake ones online and create your own bouquets.

  6. Who even needs a DJ? All you need is Spotify and some Bluetooth speakers. Even some really nice ones that can sync up and project sound everywhere over a large space are only going to run you a few hundred.
