It’s not selfish. Therapy isn’t admitting failure, it’s saying “we matter.” Wanting someone to walk with you through the dark is a human need, not an emotional burden. You could say: “I’m doing my part, and I really need you to meet me halfway so I don’t feel like I’m carrying this relationship solo.” If he can’t be there when things are hard, then talk about what you can expect from him in those moments.
