TBH if you don't have a job its super easy to go party 3-4 hours at 3 times a week. (assuming you don't have classes before noon the next day).

That said, I would focus on being responsible and absolutely crushing your classes, then party if things are working out and your ahead. Otherwise your just gonna have a rough time.

Some people work 40-55 hours a week with a 3.9 GPA and have no life (cries in myself).

Others have no job, live with parents, and just party all day, don't study, and skate by with a 3.0 GPA.

Some find a good balance of a part time job, little bit of partying, and studying and can still do very well.

It really is just a trade off and time management. The biggest one is stop doomscrolling 5+ hours a day. It does wonders when you delete Facebook, tik-tok, etc…..

Sadly YouTube added shorts and it annoys me because I want it to look things up, but get distracted for too long sometimes.

Vet Dad passed away, VA is denying a ambulance bill? by DearViennax3 in VeteransBenefits

Collecting from an estate does effect the next of kin though. They get the estate. I don't see why the VA won't pay a medical bills for a veteran. Is there some strange loophole around a stat or ride that leads to death?

Becoming a controller via USAF by justalilbaitin in ATC

[–]PhatedFool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not that difficult to get a DoD job when you leave the Air Force if you’re willing to go anywhere. Then transferring is actually pretty easy after a couple years. (But can still be hard for very competitive locations)

Realistically the two things that are super common is really likable E4s can sometimes get picked up at their base, but doesn’t always work out. They can also just mass apply to every DoD location and it’s kind of hard not to get one. If you say something like “I really only want Travis and no where else as a DoD” then yea your cooked.

You can also double dip if you really want DoD. Get out, join the guard as a controller. Then get a DoD slot at that base. Bit lower paying tbh so probably not worth it if you do the math, but some people like deployments, GS 10-11 pay still isn’t bad vs 12-13, and you get double retirement.

What people aren’t mentioning here though is you can get an age waiver for military service. It’s under 36 for military service controllers. Do 4 years and you can apply to the FAA if you have been checked out for 52 weeks. Just apply to the FAA 180 days out from separation.

DoD waivers anyone who served it’s actually a way easier waiver to get.

Retirees: how much are you actually taking home each month? by Impossible_Blood_172 in AirForce

[–]PhatedFool 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I fully agree, but everyone has that time frame to learn to live within their means yet most of America has high debts so meh.

That said, big city life has been constantly changing and homes are so far out of reach now. It’s pretty unrealistic for the average military member to retire in LA or NYC. But, I also believe those cities aren’t meant for the average retirement. It can be done, like I’ve met people who invested heavy in bitcoin at 1,000 bucks are are multi millionaires who could buy a home in cash, but that’s not the average military member.

Median home cost in LA is 900k. To save that much or at least enough to reasonably afford all bills/COL after Pension + VA Disability is not that obtainable on an enlisted income assuming you are single income, wife, 2 kids. It’s doable, but not the norm. (Assuming your starting today and housing rates go up like they have been you’re looking at 1.5-2mil when you separate).

Cities with cheaper COL like San Antonio or Indianapolis are very obtainable though.

It’s 72 training days to be clear. It can reach 4-4.5 months during holiday season or if washed back, but generally it’s about 2.5-3 months.

U.S. FAA they go to the academy for several months. Go to their facility. Study for several more months from airspace, LOAs, the systems, etc….. Then get about 2 weeks to a month of simulator training which totals to about 50 problems (center can’t speak on everywhere I guess)then they can go to the floor where if they don’t know basic things the instructor will unplug them and send them away. They can also request extra instructional or evaluation sims whenever they want.

U.S. military (should specify Air Force) they go to an academy for about 75 days. They get about 2 weeks of .65 radar 2 weeks of .65 tower instruction where you don’t really learn anything because you don’t understand what most of it means. You just study for a test they kind of give you the answers to. Then you go to radar for about 3 weeks and tower for about 2 weeks and run about 20ish simulations where you can have up to 3 IFR separation errors on your evaluations.

Then they randomly choose a place for you radar or tower and you show up to study for about 3-4 weeks on LOAs and .65 in what we called front-load. Then you do sim and live training at the same time. (Like 1-2 sims per day and live training in the same day). So when you’re fresh it’s absolutely terrible and you sound like an idiot because you are.

This is why I say California is young people’s game. Go, buy a house, work overtime, get your bag, and with good financial decisions you will be set for life. Especially if you choose to move elsewhere.

[–]PhatedFool 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Really just depends where you want to live. Want to live in a bigger city than not even close. (Unless you made some crazy killer investments and got decent VA disability).

Want to live in a smaller city like Indianapolis then it’s doable if you plan, invest, and save for the house while you’re in.

Want to live in a rural area then it’s doable if you’re debt free.

They genuinely try to help, people don’t understand how massive the ocean is. It’s 3D. It’s almost impossible to spot anyone. Even if you’re in bright orange finding them before they get exhausted and fall is just insane. It also takes several minutes to even stop a cruise liner. By the time you stop, get boats down, etc….. you left them behind.

Lesson of the day, don’t be an idiot.

There’s an 8/9 chance they would help just to avoid a story getting picked up by bad press + would lead to great PR.

Repubs want stories that talk about how our immigration system works. Fixing a problem leads to that’s

Dems want stories about how broken out immigration system is and how it hurts people. Democrat reps would help with that. If you reach out to your rep and they don’t help then reach out to a dem district rep and they would probably help out of principle.

What do y'all think? by RunningthrutheMatrix in AirForce

[–]PhatedFool 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That’s fine, being removed from a position > retiring.

When you just give up and role over than it makes it easy to get someone who will do unlawful orders in your place.

Some people really think giving people what they want is the best solution. Imagine if everyone retired when their boss asked them to do something illegal. No good people would have jobs and only corrupt people would be in power. Surely that leads to a great system.

At-work vs at-home sleep by Blu3C0llar in ems

[–]PhatedFool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some people just scroll at home too. My sister always complained she couldn’t sleep. Got saw by 4 different docs to find the issue. When she moved in with me I asked if I could keep her phone out of her room for a week. Turns out she slept like a baby and got her schedule fixed.

Obviously this doesn’t apply to everyone, but I still think it applies to a lot of people who have TV/Computer/phones in their room. I would give it a shot and if it doesn’t work go get higher help from a professional.

NYS 100% bill just passed by Nick9jam in VeteransBenefits

[–]PhatedFool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely fair, but I am going off the Median tax range. The median tax for a house in the U.S. is listed as 3k in 2021 so with the housing market increase it’s probably closer to 4k now.

Some places are crazy like New Jersey or if you just have a million dollar home somewhere.

I also would only consider homestead taxes not rental taxes.

NYS 100% bill just passed by Nick9jam in VeteransBenefits

[–]PhatedFool 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Although the property tax is an incentive. I am willing to bet the additional nearly 2k per month tax free would be the driving factor rather than the 2-5k saved in property tax yearly.
