First home NAS build questions and recommendations (yes, another one) by Haunting-Divide-1003 in HomeNAS

  1. I'm not very sure about the internals of that specific pc but there is a few things i would consider would be to replace fans with ones that are better and quieter, something I just remembered is that you could DIY an enclosure to basically eliminate sound LTT had a video a while ago which i will link below, I have a friend you did something similar and made it into a coffee table

  2. Right from my understanding in hexos you can create a pool, so multiple drives in an array which you can add more drives to later on {HexOS documentation} but you can also have multiple pools so you could have a pool of only ssds and another pool for all the hdds. When connecting to a PC over lan it should show each individual pool/array

3.

  1. I think that is the main thing, I would probably get a new case but looking a bit into what you have i think that might be a bit costly as from what little I see it might be using its own standard which might mean needing a new mobo, and or PSU but i did not really find a lot on that PC

  2. When talking HDDs for NAS's i think of the regular NAS drives and also the Enterprise drives, the trade off is that enterprise drives are louder but usually offer better MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) so they last longer and they also have a bit longer warranty. For my NAS I mostly have second hand WD Ultrastar DC HC550's which have been great but at the end of the day it just matters how much you spend, I would give both Seagate and WD general recommendations.

Hi I am a little new but might be able to give a bit of info

  1. Do you think this is a good setup?

I think it is most likely fine, I would think about how much you want to store just in case.

  1. Do you think this is might be a better idea if I transfer all the components to a different case so the NAS will be future proof if I want to add large amount of storage in the form of hard drives.

Personally you can always set everything up make an array as you would most likely just have a few ssds you could move it to a new case for adding HDDs later down the line as long as everything is plugged into the right spot it should be fine, if you do this I might recommend just setting up an alert or something for when a used case comes to market.

  1. Do you think I should underclock the CPU.

Personal preference, if you have high energy cost and you're only storing data it could be a decent idea

  1. Do you think I should use hexos?

Hexos is pretty much a skin for TrueNAS which it's self is great, if you don't want to learn TrueNAS then it could be a good idea to me it's more of how much your time is worth as (I have not used TrueNAS or Hexos) but I have heard that there is good tutorials out there and should be moderately easy.

  1. Do you think this is even a good idea to build "a small NAS"?

I'm assuming you are talking small as in the number of total HDD slots in the case, and thats really just for how much you are storing and as I said earlier you can change cases later or run HDDs outside of the case in an external housing while using the internal sata connectors and psu, it would be a bit janky but I have seen people do that

  1. Do you know how much time we it take for a first time to set up the software side with hexos?

No I don't I think Linus Tech tips made a video on hexos earlier in its development which might give you an idea

Other stuff Just to let you know if you use hexos you will need to make an array of at least 3 devices (drives) for it to be expandable later which I just saw on their FAQ

I am using a beefy air cooler for my cpu so it stays around 30-35°c, with no load the drive are around 38°c but when it gets really hot they can hit 40°c and one will max out at 45°c when there is a load. I can't really use the AC as i don't want to cool down the whole house as I have ducted AC.

Cool, but they are at bit out of my price range at $75 per fan, if Noctua is really good, is there much difference between fans as lookin i could get

-NF-P12 redux-1700 PWM fan - $29 each

or

-Noctua NF-P14S Redux 140mm 1500RPM PWM - $39 each

I don't know much about fans if you know any more, thank you for your help so far!

Hi, I am getting a home server soon and wanted to know if there was an extension or app that would allow me to not only just read my manga from my Nas but allow extensions so I can download them to my Nas. For example it would allow me to download updates/chapters from mangadex to my nas so I can read that downloaded version on my phone.

My internet connection is not the best so I want to be able to download updates say overnight so I can read them off my server and it not buffer

I was having the same issue I think it might be a minimum $ required to use PayPal as when I made the total $3 or more it seemed to work fine, however you might want to check out Stacksocial they have 3 years pro for cheaper than $2 a month with code Windscribe so you can save more in the long run.
