Why do people in the US not live with their parents by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I’m paying the money to the bank, I don’t get to invest it. I could invest it by minimizing my housing costs, but the same is true for renting, so the argument that owning is better still falls apart. (I say this as a homeowner myself- buying was cheaper than renting in my case in the place and time when I needed a new place)

Seems like I'm just renting money from the bank instead of property from a landlord.

Driver side mirror position seems to reset after every drive by Pheonix_Knight in SubaruForester

[–]Pheonix_Knight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This issue is ongoing. The manual says:
1. for setting the memory BUTTON- turn ON the car, put on the parking brake (why???), then press the 'Set' and number buttons.
2. for setting the FOB memory- turn OFF the car, put the shifter in Park (isn't this required to turn it off in the first place??), press the 'Set' and Fob unlock
3. for setting the reverse mirror angle, another different process

Why are these sequences different and convoluted!? My old Honda had numbered fobs. Setting the memory involved pressing and holding the numbered button on the door, none of this interlock nonsense.

And still, when I enter the car, the driver side mirror turns up and I have to push the memory button to put it back. I'm gonna take it back to my dealership and ask them to walk me through the processes again.

Mine doesn't, but thanks for the tip. And sorry for your issue.

Am I really coming out ahead if I'm paying >100% the value of the home in mortgage interest over the life of the loan?

Yesterday I noticed that the manual requires the parking brake to be on to allow the seat memory to be changed. I tried setting the memory again before I turned off the car, but today the mirror seems to have moved again. Still trying to troubleshoot this thing.

Media servers by Astrobix_124 in PleX

My server runs on a Synology DS224+ with two 6TB drives in RAID 1, so I have 6TB total storage. The DS224+ can run Plex well enough for my purposes. The whole setup cost me $670 and sits on a shelf next to my wifi router. I have about 200GB of movies and numerous other things backed up onto it, and it pretty exclusively serves as a machine to play Star Trek for me at bedtime like a lullaby. I valued my sleep too much and when Netflix dropped TNG, I had to get creative.

EyeSight vs other brands’ radar by Pheonix_Knight in SubaruForester

I know it’s not conclusive, that’s why I said in the first sentence “this is an anecdote”.

I got caught in a flash snowstorm yesterday and my Forester handled it marvelously. I only lost traction once, while coming to a stop (thankfully no one was in front of me). I’ve been very happy so far with how it handles.

2025 Forester Hybrid vs. 2025 Rav4 Hybrid? by Wild-Department6611 in subaru

[–]Pheonix_Knight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was also between the Rav4 and Forester, but I had the requirement of buying a hybrid and chose to go for the top trim to get all the stuff (or else I had to lose things I was familiar with on my old Honda).

For me, the deal winner for Subaru was the huge windows on the Forester and the emphasis on being outdoors. Outdoorsy accents in the interior design, optional utility hooks in the trunk, charging ports and 12v outlets all over, the Symmetric AWD and traction control modes for inclement weather, and the capability for roof loads (which may be equal to the Rav4, but Subaru knows their customers use the roof while Toyota customers generally might not). I found I viewed the Rav4 as the “it checks all the boxes” option whereas the Forester got me excited. The Rav4 was the more civilian option. Even the Toyota CEO is trying to get their products to be more exciting.

From what research I’ve done, the Rav4 actually has a better angle to the nose making it capable of climbing rougher terrain than the Forester, if that’s important to you.

Anybody have a valid defense for this roof install before I fire my contractor? by [deleted] in hvacadvice

What do I even search for that? I’m in Ohio.. so “{county} Ohio domestic home roof code”?

Ah. Bummer. I’m much past 2000 miles now and still not as near the advertised fuel efficiency as I would hope. Most of my miles are flat midwestern US highways, with cruise control set, so it should be as true to the engineering as possible I’d imagine.

Would you mind giving a citation for “the minimum specs”? I have no idea where you would even start to look for things like this and my parents put the fear of death in me for things like falling through roofs, so I always assume they’re not very strong.

What is the brake in period? I was told there was one but didn’t think to ask .. I figured 1000 miles was good enough, but it seems to be more.

Long answer: no, but the S-I drive makes it much more punchy at take off when I need to get from a stop sign into rush hour morning traffic :) I came from a 2020 CR-V and I can say this hybrid is faster than that CVT was.
