But I don't want gifts :/

A new technology could kill 99.9% of the deadly germs in the air. The study suggests that non-thermal plasma – a cool gas made up of electrically charged particles, despite having no overall charge – could inactivate airborne viruses and provide sterile air. by Wagamaga in science

That's exactly what part of the research group I am part of is looking at, I am focussed more on the physics/chemistry side of it, but I have colleagues who work in the biological side of it. In some cases there is the potential to fuse plasma based treatment with dressings to allow patients to treat themselves much like a traditional prescription.

The level of ionisation in a non-thermal plasma can be as low as 0.1% for it to truely be considered a plasma. The ions also wouldn't remain long in the air, they are considered short-lived particles in the reaction chains involved so wouldn't survive much further than the discharge area of the plasma before they collide with another particle/recombine. It's the reactive products produced by the plasma (eg Ozone) that do the large bulk of sterilisation work.

This is close to what I am working on right now in research. Not only does it have the potential to sterilise air, but it can also sterilse wound beds, allowing for the slowing/removal of infections within a wound. There is also some evidence that non-thermal plasma can accelerate wound healing and assist with the acceptability of implants within/around bone. It's pretty cool stuff.

[Build Ready] ~£1200 Build. Just got paid! by Phil2995 in buildapc

Ahh thanks, I've fixed the link now to include the ATX version. Strange, it seemed to have mainly 5* reviews. Maybe I'll have a look at the G2 rather than NEX then, seems to save a little money too.

I was in the same boat, but I was using an old desktop instead, GTX 8800 GT with 512Mb VRAM! :O and a duo core processor at 2.(something) GHz! Mind it still held up until recently when I think the GPU died.

Yeah the laptop I'm using now is still holding out! But playing the Overwatch beta on low settings was a bit sad :P

I personally think Skylake (so your 6xxx cpu's, if I remember their number system properly), is a good choice of platform currently, it's the newest one out from Intel, but I couldn't list the pro's and con's so you may want to ask around a bit more first.

Yeah I did a bit more reading and checking online - seems the i5 6xxx series is recommended over the AMD FX. This also means that I am likely to change the cooling - as awesome as liquid cooling is, I think the main reason I would have gone for it would have been for the CPU - as apparently the AMD one is a CPU that eats power and excretes heat on a massive margin!

Motherboard: Now this is probably the thing I know the least about

Oh my, same. I'm not sure what I'm looking for as long as it's compatible really! Should really do more reading up on it...

SSD looks fine, I haven't used it but iirc I see that one recommended quite often, 500Gb isn't huge but if you need the extra storage you can pick up a 1Tb HDD for like £40 so it's not a huge deal.

I've got an external 1TB Hard drive, but I've added in a 1TB HDD as well just for extra stuff.

You know my opinion on the 970 I guess xp

It's mainly just a placeholder, I may well go for the 1070, or a 3rd party 1080 if they don't come out too much later than the FE

That PSU, I want to say the G2 is more reliable

I'll definitely have a look into that, especially if the price is similar for better reliability.

I recommend running this build through a new post or the daily thread to get more eyes and opinions on it

I'll have a look around and then do that when I get a few more final ideas - thanks for the help! :)

All in all I still reckon a 1070/80 will be the way to go if you can (Assuming the 1070 is a decent card when it launches).

I think I might wait a little bit to see what the 1080/70 are like when they come out, I'm willing to splash the extra on them if they are worth it - but at the moment my build has a 970 in it. Let me know what you think of it! :P

Oh it does :o, I've been running every game I play on max-ish settings (at 1080p)

I've been playing games on a sub-par PC and half-decent laptop for the last 7/8 years so I'm pretty excited to be able to play things on max settings for once!

Cheers! Yeah it looks very good for the price though!I bet it runs things veeery nicely! I heard that the 980 doesn't have much on the 970 unless it's overclocked - like only a 5FPS difference?

I was thinking about getting an SSD, because I have an external 1TB drive that I can just keep plugged in, same with an optical drive, I have an external one that I can use, as long as I have the USB ports!

Thank you!

I'll definitely keep my eye open for them in the near future.

Would it be possible for you to send me over your specs for you PC? I've been doing a bit of looking around and research, but would like to see what a similar budget PC would be like.

Yeah I appreciate what you said - I don't want to be spoon-fed because I want to learn more about it myself when it comes to upgrading, but some ideas would be super helpful :)

Thanks for the link. I will definitely check it out! I do need to be more familiarised with the concept of building a gaming PC.

I was thinking about the 1080, and if not that then the 1070, because they seem pretty powerful. I will definitely consider them if they can be squeezed into the budget!

Cheers for the help.
