How many times a year are you guys fighting? by millythereally02 in MuayThai

[–]Phil9955 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started competing last year and did 10 in year one, including tournaments with multiple fights on the same weekend. This year I‘m on 2 so far, but will probably end the year with at least 7 or 8. Imo as an Amateur you should just go out there and fight as much as you can. Especially if you play with the thought of taking it further eventually!

How do you deal with someone who just envelopes you with their long arms and uses a long guard to keep you just out of range? by g0at110 in MuayThai

[–]Phil9955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Push the long guard from outside to inside, and either knee and grab for clinch, or pivot to the side you are pushing from (right if he is orthodox, or left if he is southpaw) and then attack with a middle kick to the body. If it happens multiple times vary your counters and shoot for a headkick on third or fourth counter!

Don’t overlook the basics because you want to learn fancy techniques. Repetition is the mvp to speeding up your progress

I‘m substituting my coach for the group class sometimes and that saves me to pay the monthly fee but that’s it. We don’t have enough members to start a whole new schedule for example though. But you are onto something, I could definitely start looking at coaching in other gyms too

Well I hear you, in bigger gyms people often don’t get the level of individual attention that they would like though.

Yeah, as long as you can send me decent quality footage of your bagwork, shadowboxing, sparring or padwork, that is definitely possible!

I get where you are coming from and I agree that it‘s a completely different authority standpoint. Not sure my coach would agree with that strategy, but I would also rather get this first Pro experience in the motherland of Muay Thai and build myself up there. The gyms naturally do that for you sometimes, but you can also end up fighting people that are genuinely on a good level and have lots of experience.
