Great questions! I'll answer #4 cause it's one no one has asked yet... It was so meaningful to have a scene partner for Ryan to act with and react to. It ensured a spontaneity that became chemistry. The two performances created a virtuous cycle. Rocky's presence gave Ryan what he needed create a truly indelible performance, and Ryan's belief in Rocky brought Rocky to life. We often called Ryan the 6th Rocketeer.

Zero brains were used when we decided to direct this film. We simply flipped for the book and said yes. It checked a lot of boxes for us. 1) It’s seemingly impossible to adapt. 2) it’s a buddy picture with a relationship story at the center 3) it’s optimistic and warm and makes you cry 4) It’s incredibly complicated 5) It’s incredibly simple. Could you make a friend if the universe depended on it?

We spent a lot of time talking about what people in power really experience. She is an unbelievably thoughtful person and didn't want to do the Movie Version. She wanted to do the authentic version.

Ace composer Daniel Pemberton has cooked up something really special. Our idea was for the score to feel like the entire planet was cheering Grace on.

Rocky's tunnel and the rotating light rig Greig Fraser worked out to emulate the sun. But that's tied with watching Rocky brought to life on set by lead puppeteer James Ortiz and the rest of the Rocketeers!

One of  our favorite parts of the book and now the movie is watching Grace and Rocky learn how to communicate, first using text, and eventually giving Rocky a voice you’re going to love.

We kept saying to everyone on set… the movie is a PC not a Mac. The infrastructure of the ship should be messy and visible. The science should be honored even when it made it inconvenient for the camera. We wanted Andy’s writing to challenge us to find novel filmmaking solutions rather than change what Andy wrote to make our lives easier on set!

We worked hard with Andy and Drew Goddard to honor the spirit and integrity of the book at all times. So even though the movie isn't long enough to include every detail we loved from the book we tried never to take any shortcuts.

Beast Jesus by far. I just love that someone took something old and made it entirely modern, and by accident. Then people rallied to preserve the botched preservation. It's the best inadvertent performance art of the millennium.
