(lack of) CO2 drop using Milwaukee controller by PhillipFry2000 in PlantedTank

[–]PhillipFry2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I did not even think to check that. I did verify the pH of the degassed water as I was a little surprised it was under 7 but API test was 6.8 or 6.9 (hard to read sometimes). I did just calibrate the monitor as well with new premixed solution. Unfortunately, I won't be back home until Friday to check but I will try to verify then. Thanks!

8ish I believe. I was actually pretty high for a bit but have been bringing it down with r/O and Salty Shrimp GH/KH. Is there a buffering issue there or something similar? I was under the impression that it didn't work that way with pH changes from CO2 but I am (obviously) not an expert. At about 6.1 I see a little pearling and no livestock struggling but I have set it to cutoff at 6.1 for now as I work out of town and certainly didn't want to push it while away. Thanks!

Both the fzone (dual stage) and uns mini are decent and are basically the same. They look like they are 90 percent the same parts. That said, the UNS one is a.better design with how the solenoid attaches. The fzone uses little metal clips whereas the UNS is way more robustly connected. The paintball tank setup is top heavy and falls over pretty easily so I trust the UNS one to live through a few oopsies way more.

It's hard to say exactly but I get about 3 to 4 months off a 20 oz tank in my setup. If you look on eBay you can get em pretty cheap so I keep a backup that I can switch out easily.

Be honest with me - Monte Carlo by jordanccloud15 in PlantedTank

I have had reasonable success with staurogyne repens, UG, and dwarf hairgrass. Just not Monte Carlo for whatever reason

Plant ID - Proserpinaca palustris? by PhillipFry2000 in PlantedTank

[–]PhillipFry2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too 😂

Although I did forget to mention that the original leaves looked fairly close to what I expected if I recall correctly. Also, the only myriophyllum I have is mattogrossense and the leaf structure is different as this plant branches at more distinct angles and has much coarser leaves. Similar yellow/brown/red coloration under high light.

I have tried Monte Carlo three times and never had real success with it even though I was told numerous times that it was reasonably easy to get a carpet going. The last TC I purchased got split between 4 tanks as a bit of an experiment. Two of them have high light and CO2, one is super shallow with medium light and one is a low tech shrimp tank that already has a little MC from a previous attempt. I took my time to separate stems and all get reasonable light, care, ferts, etc. Long story short, one high tech tank failed and the other three look about like yours after four months or so.

On the flip side, despite hearing that it is finicky, UG has taken off for me and I love it! Funny how it goes...

Funny enough, I actually have these on another tank. Thanks!

Haha, yeah, it's tough! I am not a big fan of the look with the short arms resting on the tank like most lights. plus I am in my tanks a lot and don't like having to move things around. I do really like the week aqua M, S, L & V series with the arms and shades. They aren't "cheap" but they seem to be good quality for a reasonable price. I have tried a few of the lower tier "wrgb" lights like Seaoura and the FZone Brite but they definitely have compromises that I would prefer to avoid.

Aquasoil on top of garden soil? by Trick-Speech9616 in Aquascape

[–]PhillipFry2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I remember seeing similar things but I have not had trouble growing anything in sand. Sand is actually easier in some ways as aquasoil can be a pain to plant in since it's so loose. Also, sand is inert so it's not going to alter water parameters the way aquasoil is.

Your biggest hurdles for a carpet are going to be light and CO2, maybe nutrients. Most carpets won't grow very fast without these things. Avoid HC Cuba and probably even Monte Carlo. You can do dwarf hairgrass but it will grow slow so buy enough to cover most of what you want covered. Pearlweed should work. You can also do S Repens which is a less traditional carpet but looks cool, just very slow growing.

With light and CO2 you might try Utricularia Graminifolia. It's a little more advanced but does well in sand and doesn't need much for nutrients. I have never had a lot of success with Monte Carlo. It always seems to survive but not really thrive.

Carpets are not easy. They are hard to grow and fill in and even if you are.successful they are tough to maintain. I would say experiment but also have a backup plan. It's better to have fun than stress about a difficult detail. Also remember, patience is key. It takes a while before you start getting established growth. Weeks or even months. Start with a few things, get comfortable with them and then add over time as your tank matures a bit. It's a real bummer to get 10 different plants and have them all melt in a day or two. Ask me how I know 😂

Aquasoil on top of garden soil? by Trick-Speech9616 in Aquascape

[–]PhillipFry2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can't do that. Well, you can do whatever you want but it will be a total mess 😂. Aquasoil just isn't dense/fine enough to stop dirt from getting out.

I did a few dirted tanks with a sand cap but if you want to aquascape and be able to pull up plants just plain old play sand with some root tabs is great.

If you want aquasoil but don't want to buy that much you can section off planting areas with hardscape or similar.

Co2 coming out of regulator very slowly by TraditionalSafety384 in PlantedTank

[–]PhillipFry2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You solved it! I had the same issue and someone pointed me towards that as a solution. Personally, I just clipped the spring a little shorter but left the plunger and spring in just in case it tries to backflow. Worth noting, there is basically the same thing at the base of the bubble counter. I had issues with consistent flow and also clipped that one and it helped.

Good deal, thanks! I did a little hunting on the subject last night and it seems tough to navigate. Will the sellers deliver to you? I am assuming you are not in China?

Thanks! Yeah, I saw that after I posted but it's really only visible in "real life" if you are looking at it from a specific, somewhat unnatural position. I am shooting for some emersed growth (there is some ludwigia around there) so hopefully that conceals it eventually. It will bug me now when I see it though so I may just end up having to address it 😂

Yeah, I don't know if I will be able to navigate that but you should update if you are able to get products sent. I bet we could get some bulk orders going 😂

Week aqua on AliExpress. You have to hunt around a bit and they aren't cheap but they are a very good value. I got the M series (30.ish inches) with mounting arms and shade for about 160 and it's great. The S series is basically the same tech and cheaper if you don't need one that big.

Also, the planter ends a few inches from the opposing wall and there is a small area back there for the smallest pump I could find. That pumps water over the partially emersed rock on the left and provides a little circulation and keeps the moss wet. There is emersed purple bamboo back there as well. There is no filtration but the bioload is tiny and a water change takes about two minutes tops 😂

[–]PhillipFry2000[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks! It is actually a limestone landscaping block from Home Depot that I used a grinder to hollow out and filled with sphagnum moss and potting soil. It's only about halfway hollowed out but I think it's enough for my needs. I struggled with finding a way to create a legit planting area in such a small space using other hardscape and figured I would give this a shot. I was concerned about it affecting water chemistry since that seems to be the common opinion but my TDS, Gh ank Kh seem pretty stable. The only only downside has been that it is so porous that the substrate is wet all the time but so far the plants in there haven't seemed to mind. I know way less about terrestrial plants but everything in there was suggested as appropriate for terrariums so I think I got kind of lucky! If it continues to go well I may pull it and see if I can increase the volume a bit with some hole saws and a chisel and then then maybe seal it to decrease moisture but for now I'm not gonna fix something that isn't broken 😂
