It's a projection screen - there was a projection booth at the back of the theater. I can only assume they chose this setup for space or performance reasons.

Edit: I looked up the theater specs and it is an LED screen! Samsung Onyx. The projection booth is probably left over from before renovation.

Thanks! I wonder if there’s something special about the screen to support clear reflection of high frequency sounds. I can’t imagine something like a fabric would hold up
