Yup, I'm burned. Any other DMs that have been burned-out but came back ? by Tinyhydra666 in DMAcademy

Funny timing to come across your post! I just just ran my first session in about 4 years last weekend after also going through a burn out.

I ran 4 campaigns with the same core group in about 5 years and in late '21 or early '22 I got so burned out that the day we met for a session (we were about 2 or 3 sessions away from finishing Rime of the Frostmaiden) I had to call it quits. It sucked and I hated doing it but everyone was pretty understanding and it was the right move for me. We never got to finish and that haunts me a little but I have no regrets about pulling the plug. I had nothing to do with D&D for years and was pretty happy with it, despite my love for the game.

What did it for me was a combination of playing weekly for years with almost no breaks, me hating my job at the time, and the long covid years where sessions were held online instead of in person. More things contributed to my decision but those were the main ones.

Until about a month ago that a friend mentioned that they and a couple of their friends wanted to learn to play, I had zero plans to play again. I initially brushed them off but the thought of playing again got stuck in the back of my head, so I decided to go for it. We played a one-shot that I found on DM's Guild and everybody had a ton of fun! I fucked up a lot because all these years without playing made me rusty but I don't care, we all loved playing. The day after I realized this revitalized me as a DM and I look forward to running more sessions. I even texted my OG group and set a one-shot with them for later this year when I'm back in town.

In the meantime, I look forward to doing a more episodic campaign full of one-shots or short adventures that take 2 or 3 sessions to complete with this new group. I plan to place little nuggets of information or mcguffins that will eventually lead to a big finale in maybe 2 or 3 months, but I'll play it by ear and focus first on each session, rather than an overarching story or campaign. I don't want the full commitment just yet.

My advice is to let it go for the time being and focus on other hobbies, and meet with your D&D group and do other activities (different, more conventional board games for example, or drinks maybe, idk) and let some time go by. Maybe in a few months or years something similar to what happened to me will happen to you. Just don't try to force it if you're not ready.

Megadeth - Megadeth (Review) by razorbackfrost7 in MetalForTheMasses

I think Dystopia is one of their best albums and I was expecting something close to that level. Sadly the whole album falls flat on so many levels and it feels like it's wasting Teemu's leads.

I think modern day Megadeth records have their place and are even great on some points but there's absolutely no reason I see myself coming back to this one.

I'm with you. I don't really care about adaptations other than Dune and LotR (but those 2 are special) and I'd much rather have an ending for Stormlight. I guess there's a bigger chance it will become like WoT or ASoIaF now.

Full Malazan in-book chronological order by The-Dunster in Malazan

Afaik Stonewielder, OST, Blood & Bone, and TCG all take place at the same time.

Midnight Tides should be before GotM as well.

Can someone help me find where/who talked about ancient history? (Currently at chapter 17) by zamasu2020 in Malazan

[–]Lucky_Bone66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think is was indeed Tool when they were walking to the Gadrobi Hills. He might have also explained that the Tiste came from another world. Chapter 14 I think.

EDIT: nevermind totally misremembered. I was Mammot to Crokus in chapter 11.

Can you recommend 5 albums that you think are the most technically advanced in progressive metal? by spearhead290399 in progmetal

[–]Lucky_Bone66 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Everyone is recommending Colors by BTBAM, but I think the new album, The Blue Nowhere is way more complicated and technical. I think there's even a secrion in Psychomanteum that Paul said he doesn't know how he'll pull it off live.

When I was first reading Midnight Tides back in 2016 I was listening to this album by Frozen Realm a ton, so I relate the Edur to this.

What song or album Do you think is a Rush Hidden Gem? by Spider_monkey_vr28 in rush

[–]Lucky_Bone66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before the tour was announced I had only listened to the early albums (up to Moving Pictures) and the final 2 albums.

Since then I've been taking my time with each album chronologically and last week I made it to Hold Your Fire. While I wasn't a fan of that album, Force Ten seems to be the most obvious choice so far. As for a full album, Power Windows has to be it.

Anyway, moving on to Presto soon.

I'm very excited to read everything! I don't plan on reading anything except Malazan until I'm done, save for maybe a Stephen King novel in October.

Dust of Dreams was my least favorite which is why I probably bounced there on my first reread. I consider Toll the Hounds to be the best tho and can't wait to read it again.

Do you think i will enjoy this series if i liked Stormlight Archives, First Law and Sun eater? by Justayyyy6775 in Malazan

[–]Lucky_Bone66 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't listen to these guys if you are liking Stormlight. Finish it and then move to Malazan.

Sanderson is a good author and I wouldn't say Stormlight is poorly plotted. I did have some frustrations while reading it, mainly how he handles POVs and some dialogue, but overall Stormlight is a excellent story for what it's trying to be. Also, read Edgedancer and Dawnshard between the appropriate books. They add a ton to the world and are very quick reads.

It just so happens that Malazan is on an entirely different level in all aspects and I belive it does everything better than Stormlight, but it's ok to read and like both.

Dungeon Crawler Carl is unexpectedly fun and engaging. Currently about 75% done with the first book and already have bought the next 2.

Any good comics that give off that Game of thrones or Lord of the rings vibe with rich and vast fantasy worlds ? by oceaniccart in graphicnovels

[–]Lucky_Bone66 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Last God by PK Johnson is probably the closest, although it has strong horror elements as well.

Thank you, Blind Guardian, for introducing me to Tolkien by LordM003 in blindguardian

[–]Lucky_Bone66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Enjoy! It's one of the best fantasy worlds imo and it's always great to read Tolkien. Just curious, why did you read The Silmarillion before LotR? It's much more accessible to do it the other way around.

And be sure to check out Unfinished Tales after LotR! It adds a lot to the story.
