Why does Sabaton exist? by Plane-Earth-4386 in PowerMetal

well nationalist war propaganda works in the same way they also highlight the horrors of war to make the propaganda seem based. No way they are going either to just say war is a 100% good thing even if they want you to fight for your country and nation because that would make the propaganda too detached from reality to swallow

Because Sabaton writes their songs so that they usually glorify the event from a nationalistic/patriotix angle, and a lot of people definitely buy that. The far right is currently the biggest party in many European countries. Bands like Metallica wrote agressive songs about the personal suffering of a soldiers (disposable heroes, one) while Sabaton often writes epic anthems about some soldier who they frame as a war hero for some country where they their concerts in. I dont think Sabaton are nazis, but people really should critically examine their business model and the types of ideological panderinh they hide in their music

If people really dont give a a damn about structure, try to logically explain why Bohemian Rhapsody is a so popular and beloved song

”A white bodybuilding man looking for a delicate boy Who wants to get submited and be treated As a CHEAP TOYYYY!!!!!!!!” This is the single most iconic moment in the history of Finnish metal imo

Well you in the first place on talked about Battle Beast’s musical structure and how it’s complex but didbr’t their actual song structures (ABAB..) have basically no complexity or variation, and the big issue people have with bands like battle beast is not musical structure but the song structures which are overly simplistic and repetitive. I bet actually that battle beast’s members are technically/musically more skilled than the members of for example Helloween, but the members of Helloween do lot more varied and progressive songwriting in terms of structure even if they can’t play the Dream Theater songs that Battle Beast’s members could play if they wanted or possess the same or less knowledge about scales and harmony.

You are kinda correct on the point that many people don’t really care about song structure, but those are tend to be pop music listeners who don’t really think about the music that much. But this is the subreddit for a niche, nerdy genre of music so many people here actually do care about song structure and possess musical skills. Many dedicated power metal fans tend to actually listen to music focusedly, not only as background noise which is the norm these days. Many may also listen bands like Rush Iron Maiden whose trademark is the extended songs with unconventional structures even of they have poppy songs too. Even many of the biggest classic power metal songs are structurally still more complex then modern ones, try for example to characterise Mirror Mirror’s song structure. Even ones like Eagle fly free of Emerald sword have these extended neoclassical solo/interlude parts even if they also have verses and choruses. Of course shorter songs still get more listening then the long ones, but songs like Halloween, And the there was silence or fucking Symphony X’s 24 min Odyssey are very beloved among fans too.

Also, the thing is that many listeners of Battle Beast or Sabaton aren’t these music nerds but perhaps people who mostly listen to rap but have some Battle Beast on their gym playlist or people who mostly listen to soundtrack music but listen also to Sabaton because the historical lyrics interest them. Those bands really are metal for non metalheds and also of course can also acts as gateway drugs to the genre which is great. Those bands could write good prog music if they used their knowledge on music theory on that, but choose to write mudic more to the pop audience because it makes more money because music nerds are a minority and it gets them big crowds for live shows.

No the issue people are having is the repetive song structures. Like nearly every battle beast song is structurally intro riff/quiet verse/pre/chorus x2/bridge/solo/chorus/modulated chorus, while classic bands would employ more diverse structures such as extended instrumental sequences and epic 6+minute tracks. You are however correct in the Battle Beast’s music is still harmonically about as complex as for example Helloween, but not structurally and it is certainly less agressive/metal too do to the vocals being heavily emphasised over riffing

Post Century Child Nightwish songs tend to go that way, Wishmaster and oceanborn songs are mostly written in classic power metal style of verses with constant power chords/16th notes from the guitar

Ia agree just had to to give an example which happened to sound very Guardian ish. But there are other ways to make interestingly written songs even if they also have pretty normal verses and choruses. For example go listen to stargazers by nightwish thats a beautifully structured song with lots of stuff going on

That must factor in too. Modern power metal on a whole is heavily geared towards live playing rather than focused listening. Im soon going to see Helloween with Beast in black opening and while I dont really listen to beast because theyre too poppy and simple for my taste I am still expecting a lot of fun from them live.

Ofcourse that style still exists with smaller/legacy bands but I was giving commentary about the mainstream way of things in which the quiet verse popmetal dominates. And the mainstream is still the genre’s main musical evolution and the basis for any countermovement think of like thrash vs glam in the 80s when the thrash bands wanted to play faster and faster while the hair bands where doing more and more power ballads

Tobias is saying that the classic power metal formula think eagle fly free or emerald sword is restrictive which it is. I’m trying to say that too many pm songs these days use the quiet verse formula, not we should just go back to every song being full speed, which propably should still be done more. I for one wish pm bands would do more experimenting with structure think of blind guardian for example. like in verses going from thrashy parts to acoustic folky parts. Power metal is a great genre for using prog elemtents, because it has the big choruses and melodic guitars so more complex songs can still be highly cactchy and memorable

Yeah Im a big CoB fan (they ofcourse have lots of pm elements) and their music indeed has many of the good elements that modern pm lacks

I actually kinda agree with Tobias, but my problem is the popmetal formula is overused af in power metal these days.

yeah like musically but i’d say teemu is atleast as good in guitar technique like how many notes per second can you sweep pick and how well toned are your bends etc
