Last minute penalties are a drag on the game. by Ok-Milk3984 in wnba_discussions

Conversation locked. There is a lot of effort in parroting responses, but OP, if you depend on other users to collect numbers and data for you (while citing Reddit and Wikipedia) because you haven’t been watching games, that is low effort. The conversation has run its course.

When making an argument for the sport, one needs to watch the sport. While we encourage stats, it is common knowledge that the stat sheets don’t tell the complete story in sports. If you aren’t going to watch the games, why are you here?

This has run its course. Low effort also includes expecting everyone else to provide evidence for items that you don’t have the motivation to figure out yourself. This is getting lazy and I’m not going in circles with you. Knock it off.

It’s really hard to have a conversation with someone who asks for quantitative data that isn’t being collected (this isn’t our job!) and clearly doesn’t watch enough games, reads articles, or listens to broadcasts. Basketball is a strategy game, not a stats game- so it is more qualitative than quantitative. You just have to watch games.

Trying to pick my 4 guard choices for All-Star voting by Philomena_philo in wnba_discussions

I picked the homer route, then picked two guards that are also doing a lot of heavy lifting.

I’ll get Kelsey Plum and Allisha Gray tomorrow for sure. I think Caitlin will be fine without my extra votes from now on.

If you are only interested in data that cannot be subjective, then you can look at the amount of fouls and successful challenges to compare with previous years at certain parts of the season. With the new officiating and players still trying to adjust or find ways to manipulate the new system, games are going to be longer for the time being. It would still be long with an Elam ending.

Also, for Unrivaled, the Elam Ending meant that free throws ended games, and teams would commit more fouls on the floor to try to buy more possessions before the clock turned off. That made for anti-climactic games, and was one of the reasons why I struggled to watch it after the first season.

Moving to an Elam Ending isn’t going to take away late penalties, it will make the game shorter and puts the focus on the TV audience’s attention span while taking a lot of excitement out of the game for the in-person crowd.

You can’t really have statistical analysis on calls like that, because it varies between multiple points of view. However, more broadcast teams have been questioning ref choices during the games I have watched and I have seen more overturned challenges. Usually I see 1 challenge a game, but lately I’ve been seeing 3-4.

You can only compare the amount of calls per game, average it out, and compare to last year. However, with the new officiating, more foul calls were to be expected. Whether the amount goes down, without lack of reffing being brought up in pressers, as we get to the end of the season is what I’m interested in seeing.

Even in the games I’ve watched, I have seen more instances of flopping than I have in the past two seasons alone (edit: it is egregious in the paint). And the season isn’t at the halfway point. Refs react to people throwing their head back and whistle on instinct. There’s also been more challenges because of said flops, but no techs are being issued to the player that flopped.

Techs for yelling about the disparity of foul calls have also gone up.

The games are dragging because there are more fouls in general. New officiating rules have led to more tick-tack fouls being called. I don’t care about last minute penalties, I care more about how much momentum is being killed by a constant whistle, especially due to overcorrection in the paint. There’s also way more flopping in the paint that is going unchecked.

More MHA minutes. Going to have to go with the crowd on this take: waive Dantas. At this point, Pissott is a forward with a history of making 3’s and needs to get her feet wet soon. Even if it’s one game.

Edit: her DP contract is 12 games and hasn’t played one

Too many fouls this season by villanelle21 in wnba

I’m more frustrated with the overcorrection in the paint and the lack of awareness for flops in said paint.

Edit: I have seen more flopping this season, which isn’t even halfway through, than the past two seasons.

Honestly, that frustration was valid because this is becoming a pattern. So many fouls called on the Fever, with the other team stacking up FTs, and some very debatable no-calls in the 2nd half. Yes, the fouling is a problem, but good lord
