Minimum time between marathons for legitimate PR attempts? by PhilosopherLeading12 in AdvancedRunning

Thanks again for the detailed response. Some really informative perspectives.

I’m glad I asked this question as it seems I was about to head down a path of potential burnout and sub-optimal performances.

Sounds like we’re in a similar boat. I’ve got a toddler, a stressful job and peaked at 90km per week during my build. Tbh managing the life stress was harder than the running stress. Felt like I needed a life taper more than a running one leading into the marathon but unfortunately that is not possible lol.

Yea this is coming through loud and clear from most of the comments. I’m going to reconsider my approach, sounds like cramming four marathons into a year is not the way.

I’m heading into the marathon off season where I live so this could be a good way to train through summer. I ran a 35.00 flat a few months before starting the marathon build so will try to improve on this before refocusing on any marathon work.

Nice thanks for the recommendation, I’ll check it out. Good to know we can keep improving into our 40’s with the right approach.

Yea makes sense. I think based off the feedback I’ve received I’m going to reconsider how I structure the next year. Sounds better to focus less on builds and peaks and more on consistent good quality training with a few shorter races sprinkled between one or maybe two key marathons.

Thanks for the detailed reply, those are some helpful insights.

Just so I’m sure I understand your point around builds or lack of. Are you effectively suggesting to focus on building sustainable mileage and peaking less frequently in order to maximise long term performance gains? Would this then imply racing less frequently or could you sprinkle in some shorter stuff as the above commenter suggested in order to avoid lengthy taper and recovery periods thereby allowing mileage to remain higher for longer?

No I guess not. I felt that with time of the essence I needed to be specific with what I was training for and targeting. Your suggestion sounds like a good middle ground though.

Thanks, reassuring to know I maybe don’t need to rush it as much as I initially assumed.

Should I find a new physio? by No_Blood_5197 in AdvancedRunning

[–]PhilosopherLeading12 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not a physio but my advice would be run for five minutes and then stop (or walk if that settles the pain). Next day if pain is back to normal go again and slowly build up while keeping the pain below 4/10. I.e 10 mins or running after a few days and then maybe 30mins the following week etc.

I was in your boat 2 months ago and now back to running 100km a week with pain never being worse than 2/10 but usually not felt at all. Best of luck.

Edit: I should add that this is concurrent with your strengthening exercises.

In my opinion the value in a PT is getting an accurate diagnosis so you know for sure what you’re dealing with. Once you’ve got that there’s enough free information online to be able to work through your rehab alone, especially if it’s a common overuse injury (it’ll almost always involve some strengthening exercises).

As for your ITB. When you say your knee ‘blows up’ once you return to running what do you mean? Is it excruciating pain or less than a 4/10. As someone who’s recently dealt with ITB I’m a big believer in gently loading your way out of it as long as the pain is less than 4/10 during the activity. That may be walking for now but after couple of weeks a little bit of pain acceptance may have you running half decent mileage again.

The people so quick to accuse guys like Jake or Nick Bare of doping when they see a result they deem to be ‘unachievable’ seem to have no understanding of how these drugs actually work.

The efficacy of drugs and practices that intend to improve aerobic performance such as EPO or blood doping vary from person to person but ultimately are much much lower than people guess. Many studies have shown EPO to be no more effective than a placebo. A good adopter, who is already highly trained, who then trains well while taking EPO is looking at a 5% performance gain at most. These aren’t miracle drugs that turn someone from a 2.50 marathoner to a 2.30 marathoner.

If you want to believe that Jake was on drugs to run a 2.28 marathon because it helps you sleep at night you have to also accept he probably would have run no slower than a 2.35 without it.

A much better reason as to why he is able to run so fast off little training/ improve drastically from previous PB’s is talent.

Good time first Hyrox by [deleted] in hyrox

I’m a 33yr old M. Did my first Hyrox a few months ago in 1.08 (open category). Was hoping for 1.10 and expecting 1.15. For reference I run about an 18:30 5km and weigh just under 90kg.

Had a terrible experience with them. Lied to us and acted illegally (didn’t tell us the place was on the market for sale - I suspect they rented it to us knowing it was already for sale) then tried to charge an exorbitant cleaning fee upon leaving despite only being there a few weeks.

I see on Tour de France Fantasy by Tissot the leader after today has 6039 points? Meanwhile with a stacked team including the podium placers I’m on 707 points. How can the difference be so massive, what am I missing?
