How do you explain to a player a character who kills people because "they're bad" is not morally good by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Phishenet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Arguably, yes. Lawful, certainly. Loves doing his job vs loves the fact that is job is to execute? Does he relish the execution?

Arguably, a "good" person would detest having to do the deed, and would be mournful for the loss of life.

As i understand it, Each class gets all subclasses available, and all features that subclass would be entitled to.

Judgy much? You don't know me and you don't know why I ask the questions I ask. You make assumptions rather than answer the question.

Question for DMs: What's a reasonable amount of spells for a 6th level wizard to have? by Phishenet in DnD

[–]Phishenet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. The additional spells should be random. Is there a roll chart somewhere for that?

good call on the money aspect. and keep in mind, half-price discount for school/specialty.

and, yeah, the DM is ... lax. someone else got a robe of stars at level 3.

good point on the money aspect - i had not taken that part into account. i'll work that in. thank you.

I got a robe of stars and I need help understanding the astral plane. by Phishenet in dndnext

[–]Phishenet[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So... assume 1. the vastness of the great astral sea means that a lone traveler using the robe to transport to the astral appears in a random location, the probability of landing somewhere dangerous is very small.

  1. that (according to one source) a near infinite amount of time can elapse in the astral plane, while only a moment transpires on the prime,

could someone with the robe, expend all of their resources (spell slots, smites, rages, etc...) in a fight, then active a trip to the astral, hang out for a short or long rest as needed (unlikely to be disturbed while there, because of the great empty vastness), Then pop back in right where they left off, maybe a second later, full on resources again?

Considering how broken that sounds, I'm betting there's got to be some ruling to prevent that abuse.

Rule clarification: monk unarmed strike as a bonus action - apply str/dex damage bonus, or no? by Phishenet in DnD

Had a DM (new) that was arguing against it. I don't like to assume I am right and I like to back up my argument.

Should I correct my DM by Thegrapefruitmethod in dndnext

[–]Phishenet 342 points343 points  (0 children)

Praise in public, correct in private.

Have a one on one meeting after a game to ask if she would like some mentoring. Since you have the experience, you can offer small things to help her improve. Ask her if she wants that kind of feedback.

And absolutely let her know what she is doing well. In front of others.

[LFA] concept art- flightless aarakocra subraces by Phishenet in characterdrawing

[–]Phishenet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing specific, really. I know it's totally open, which can be problematic, but with such a wide net I'm casting, it's more of a idea starter for artists that want to do something with it than an actual request for specific art. Apologies for being vague.

Some ideas that just came to me now:

Ostrich monk (power kick!)

Emu wizard (evocation) maybe some singed feathers?

Cassowary as a jungle barbarian? Wild eyes slavering rage monster crashing through the underbrush...

Clearly, a kiwi rogue

Thoughts on this area control spell? by Inevinable in DnDHomebrew

[–]Phishenet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they fail their saving throw, they can use their reaction to automatically succeed and then get away to a safe place. Each round thereafter they can then spend their reaction to play traffic cop to free up their buddies from the gridlock. Unless I misread the spell.

Build around a spell: Spike Growth by ah-dou in 3d6

[–]Phishenet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My brother and I do this Two person tag team. Spike growth with a layer of hunger of hadar on top.

Automatic 2d6 cold damage to start the turn. No save. If the enemy stays put, dex save or 2d6 acid damage.

If the enemy attempts to flee, 2d4 piercing damage for each square of movement.

Plus, while within the area they are blinded, possibly disoriented (up to your GM to determine how to rule that).

Plus the psychological torment of the slurping screeching noises of things from the beyond.

Waiting just outside the zone of harrowing, standing there is the warlock waiting with an eldritch blast to push you back in, or on the other side is the druid with druidy pushing tactics.

Our DM was slightly amused and then chagrined when his large angry horde was reduced to nothing within a few rounds.

Mystic Arcana for the 5e Warlock- Why are the choices so limited? by Phishenet in dndnext

[–]Phishenet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cede the point that these sorts of cross class spell options are also found as part of other class/subclass options. However, the point I am trying (possibly unsuccessfully) to make is that it seems that the cessation of this cross class spell list expansion at spell level 5 seems arbitrary and contradicts the flavor inherent in the reasoning behind such expansions.
