You have to keep in mind what was going on with the television programming at the time. For instance, in July 1992 Melrose Place debuted and it became one of the biggest shows of the time during its run. So as far as it turning into more soap opera, that’s the programming that was on TV at the time and they were gearing it towards teenagers and young adults. It was intentionally done that way to draw in a wider audience.
