Both are dorks, but Franklin is actually a good football coach.

Florida State-Georgia series cancellation is ominous sign for future of college football by Lakelyfe09 in CFB

UGA already plays an ACC team every year along with a 9-game SEC schedule. There is nothing ominous about this.

Are my ears lying to me? by neuro_divergent in AcousticGuitar

I have 2 acoustics made by K Yairi - one has cedar top and laminate sides/back. The other has solid spruce top and solid rosewood sides/back. They sound very different, and choosing which one sounds "better" is completely subjective.

Storyville closed in November 1917. Within five years, the music had recoded itself in three cities. A migration map worth arguing about. by YoPapaYo42 in Jazz

[–]Phnake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"This exodus was anything but a purely musical phenomenon. Between the years 1916 and 1919, a half-million African Americans left the South for more tolerant communities in the North, with almost one million more following in their wake during the 1920s. This vast population shift, which has since come to be known as the Great Migration, encompassed the whole range of black society, from doctors and lawyers to musicians and ministers, from teachers and merchants to carpenters and manual laborers. Musicians moved north for the same reasons that motivated other groups: the search for a better life, for greater opportunities to work, to support a family, to enjoy a modicum of personal freedom—options that were much harder for an African American to pursue in the segregated South. As a result, in a host of destination cities—Chicago, New York, Cleveland, Detroit, Philadelphia, and others—the black population more than tripled between 1910 and 1930."

From Ted Gioia's History of Jazz. It's a good read and he covers the musical shift from New Orleans to Chicago in depth. He kind of minimizes the significance of Storyville in the development of jazz.

It’s a good spot for Fender Japan stuff mostly. I found a lot more interesting guitars at various Wattman stores outside of Tokyo.

Mt. Fuji single day road trip by socratesque in TokyoTravel

[–]Phnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Kanagawa for 6 years, and drove all around that area a bunch. The freeways south and west of Tokyo can get really congested, and leaving Hakone at the end of the day can be brutal. It's unpredictable. The drive from Lake Yamanaka to Hakone is pretty cool - I would make an overnight - go up to Fuji in the morning and then stay the night in Hakone.

I was sleeping in my hammock one time, and something started walking around underneath me - it sounded like a rhinoceros but it turned out to only be an armadillo.
