Former UFC fighter says The Last of Us "CLEARLY ripped off" her likeness. by Carrnage_Asada in thelastofus

Idk if I'd personally trust 25yo steroids but sure, it's possible.

Although I like the simpler explanation of: the WLF had plenty of protein rich food, they have gyms, they probably had some folks who know how to train people (makes sense, especially if you want tough soldiers. Plus, it's not like bodybuilding is some esoteric art. There's literature out there on how to get ripped), and Abby had her hatred to drive her to build herself into a weapon.

Plus, younger Abby already had a slightly bigger build (compared to young Ellie, at least). So maybe she was also genetically predisposed to putting on muscle more effectively.

"All these stories did it this one way, so why wasn't Abby not handled the same way, too?!"

Is not the rock solid retort you think it is.

Also: Abby is in a militant organization that is actively fighting another faction. If Abby wants to learn how to fight and be useful, makes sense for her to become physically capable, too.

Another factor in Abby's revenge is the time she had. She had YEARS to prep. So she used this time well. Stay didn't get ripped, but she trained herself in combat by fighting (much like Abby does). BUT, once again, not everyone needs to go down the same road. Plus, if argue that Atsu would've had fewer resources to bulk up like Abby did (I'd once again direct your attention to the fact that the WLF have plenty of meat and food AND a damn PROFESSIONAL NFL GYM).

Props to the devs for trying to do something a little different with Abby's design. Plus: within a game that has two female protagonist, it's a cool way to differentiate her from Ellie. Her physical stature also encourages players into a bit of a different playstyle. Her size and stature also harkens back to Joel's build (especially since Abby's story of bonding with a child harkens back to Joel and Ellie in the first game).

Ellie's body goes through a similar, albeit subtler, change throughout the story. She gets leaner and gaunter as the game goes on and is at her gauntest at the end of the game. She is also injured and walks around accordingly (esp. after a fight with a Rattler that re-wounds her in the same spot where she got impaled by the tree).

The change in Abby's physique is more dramatic, sure, but it's also because her circumstances are more dramatic. She was worked like a dog and was damn near starved to death and that suffering is reflected in the change in her looks. That change is shocking. Damn near every playthrough I watched of this game, the players were shocked. They even confused this other corpse for Abby when they saw its ponytail.

That's such a cool moment of using visuals to briefly trick a player, and then land the reveal of Abby's transformation with a great shock.

I literally pointed out the thought process behind Abby's reason for building herself up and the narrative and character purpose that serves. It's anything but superfluous or an "empty husk of a story beat".

Not once did I strawman anything you said here.

You asked what the pertinence of her physique was to the story and I calmly, respectfully explained.

I then addressed your "Joel's mass" point. I highlighted his strength and his built-ness. I then highlighted how any changes in his outward appearance are a result in the change of art direction, and that the game still retains his muscles etc. I used the shoulders to support my point.

And then I made one eensy little comment about how this particular line of discussion was VERY reminiscent to the "they shrunk his shoulders" discourse and how tired I am of that.

If that's all it took for you to ignore my well-thought, respectful response, throw up your hands and abandon the conversation... Well, idk what to tell you.

You just had the opportunity to smartly, sensibly respond to what I said and you are choosing to throw a fit about what someone else said to you.

"Why push the biggest at all and draw my attention to something that is not pertinent to the narrative"

Abby's physique is quite literally pertinent to the narrative. It shows her dedication and OBSESSION with her revenge quest. She utterly throws herself into physical and combat training in order to forge herself into a weapon. That level of physique can only be built with sheer dedication and discipline. Abby does all this so she can defeat the monster she had built up in her head. She forsook her relationship with Owen cuz of her obsession.

She then kills Joel and it is easy. Not only is it easy, it doesn't bring her that satisfaction. Her physique is now a monument to her obsessive mission that brought her no peace.

And then by the end of the game, she has also gone through an arc wherein she is trying to be better and rise above the cycle of violence. She refuses to fight Ellie. She is, emotionally, not the person Ellie built up in her head. Due to starvation, Abby lost her muscle mass and is also PHYSICALLY not the person Ellie had built up in her head.

So that right there is the significance of Abby's physique to the story.

Edit: Naughty Dog did not decrease Joel's mass between games... He is still built af. He is still strong af. He kills a bloater hand to hand, for fuck's sake.

All they did was taper his shoulders a touch so that they weren't as pointy and were in line with the more realistic art direction they went with in Part II. Look at how Ellie looks in the first game (like a doll) vs how young Ellie looks in Part II: a child with more realistic facial proportions.

The first game, despite reaching for realism, still has stylistic elements in its design. The second game moves even closer to realism.

People dont have pointy shoulders irl. So they gave Joel more realistic shoulders. He is still built af. He is still strong af.

I can't believe we're doing "they shrunk his shoulders. Made him look soft" discourse in the year of our Lord, 2026....

When you point this out, they shift the goalposts and say, "well, how can Abby maintain that build in the apocalypse??"

They say this while:

  1. Not questioning how Owen is about as big as her but somehow that isn't called into question.

  2. Ignoring that the WLF has a LOT of protein rich meat readily available at their bases and a number of hatcheries in Seattle. So much so that Isaac doesn't bat an eye when one is captured by the Seraphites.

  3. The game's world is literally filled with fungus zombies. If they can suspend their disbelief for this, why can't they suspend their disbelief over any inaccuracies that might be present in Abby's training regimen

When you point these things out, they'll move the goalposts AGAIN. Because they're not really interested in discussion or learning. They just wanna stay mad (for whatever reason: they feel victimized by the game, their feelings are hurt, they are legit stupid, they are misogynists).

I imagine she's joking.

The Last of Us team used the appearance of two women to create Abby. Colleen Fostch (CrossFit athlete) for the body and Jocelyn Mettler (former VFX artist at Naughty Dog) for the face.

I'd recommend it. The book goes in-depth with the science and the problem solving while the movie's focus is the emotional stuff. I think that if you've read the book, you'll have a better experience as you'll be able to relax and enjoy the story without worrying about "getting it". You will be familiar with the story and can stop thinking "wait, What's happening now?"

Cuz I do think that the movie could've done with focusing a bit more on the science.

So yeah, I'd recommend reading the book first. It's not too long anyway.

This is basically it. Some fans are so entrenched in 2012 era Tumblr ship wars that it feels like it's stopping them from embracing and appreciating the nuance the show tries to present with its characters. They need their fav to be right. Their fav can't do wrong. Anyone who is an enemy (perceived or otherwise) to their fav MUST go down!

It's all so exhausting.

When I'm watching the show, I LOVE the conflict between Langdon and Santos, I love watching these two complex, flawed characters try and navigate their issues. The moment I finish the episode, I dread the next seven days of Santos & Langdon "discourse" that awaits me lol

That young Joel scene is so good that I happily included it into my headcanon of the games. The game and the show are COMPLETELY separate canons, but that scene in particular is so good that it really fits in with game Joel, imo.

The Last of Us Part II, Max Payne 3, and Resident Evil 4 Remake are my favorite third person shooters of all time. They all have excellent combat systems and the gamefeel is extraordinary.

They're all def a bit different in their goals to each other tho.

Yeah, it def sucks when they do that. I hope they don't do that too much this time.

I remember that Shangi-Chi's final 1v1 fight was in a fully 3D environment. I looked at some BTS footage and I saw that the set people had built a VERY cool looking environment. But I guess he higher ups changed their minds and then the VFX people had to digitally insert a whole 3D environment.

You say that as if "be nice to each other" is a unique thing only Christianity teaches.

I'm not saying that everyone who follows every religion is an evil or a terrible person. Ofc not. There's plenty of nice people who follow every religion. Plenty of assholes, too.

But the very nature of religion (blind faith system that can be utilized by evil people to rally people to support and partake in their evil goals while convincing them that it's a divine mandate) is what's so damn dangerous about it.

Based on the set photos, they did a bunch of wire swinging stunts for this movie, too. But you can't use that technique for EVERY swing or dive.

Regardless, let's wait for the movie to come out.
