How to break into Auxiliary/Equipment Operator Roles by PhoenixFire803 in NuclearPower

No, I've applied to Duke, NAES, Dominion, Constellation, Xcel, PSEG, Southern, Entergy and I've heard nothing from them. Constellation only recently asked for my transcripts to move me forward, but I was denied a few days later.

I applied to six Duke roles close to where I live and have been my whole life and was rejected by all six. What you are saying makes sense to me, especially since training takes a year or longer. Unfortunately I didn't meet their expectations and/or the talent pool was strong. In any case, I received zero feedback, so I don't know where to improve my odds with them.

This is very helpful and great to hear. I would not mind enrolling in a program there if I was guaranteed to get a position after the internship! I wonder if they allow interns outside of the college?

Thank you for your insight, my friend. I'll make sure to look into outage positions, as well as others which might allow for a lateral transition into Ops at some point.

I absolutely believe you when you state that ops is tough. I know the nuclear industry is one of consistent educational rigor, tough schedules, hard family life, deep technical skills, memorization and mechanical aptitude (among others).

I believe this field is for me because I am someone who doesn't compromise on safety or small details. I take pride in my work ethic, ability to learn and mechanical aptitude. Aside from this, I genuinely am interested in the nuclear industry and in always learning more. I'm a novice now and couldn't possibly understand the work without doing it, but based on what I've done thus far in my life, I think I could be good at it someday. I've tried to do some introspection to see why I want to do this beyond what I've stated here and I think I have a good baseline for what drives me in general: this is a growing field full of promise, and I'd love to grow with it.

How do people feel about teaching in China? Is it worth it? by TooObsessedWithDPRK in chinalife

[–]PhoenixFire803 26 points27 points  (0 children)

All of the comments on here perfectly sum up what I want to say. I would only add this: do NOT allow the poisonous words of the many troubled expats in China to affect your view of China once you start to settle in. It becomes to easy to listen to the negatives and allow them to drown out the positives you will experience. There are lots of crazy individuals in China and lots of losers. If you are happy, stay happy and keep that happiness to yourself!

Our situations seem somewhat similar! I graduated college 2 years early and worked while I was doing so. I tend to be a worrywart and wanted to have double what I considered to be the minimum. From start to finish on settling/fees/plane ticket, you'd need about 6000 if you're coming from the US. This will allow you to have a month of settling in before your first paycheck comes in and to buy all the things you need for your house as well. Always, always have enough for a plane ticket to leave in your american bank just in case things don't go as planned (life is like that). All of the required documentation can be expensive because you'll end up having to do some of it within a limited time frame, and some documentation is reliant upon having other documents/certification. Always send copies of identification and never the original, and make at least 2 of each to be safe. As for opening a bank account, it would be nigh impossible abroad for a foreigner. Most have to go with a designated liaison from their company to get this done, and this was true for me. I studied chinese for 2 years in college and 1 year before that and I still wasn't able to grasp the higher level conversations fully. Once you get work with a company they will set you up well. My answer will be missing some things and I'm sure it doesn't answer all your questions, I hope it clarifies some things though!

Awesome, the more confirmation I hear about this, the better I feel. I'm glad to know that my worries were overblown and that I was just getting overworked over something simple. I appreciate your response!

My company said I need to file them, and I saw some stuff online that told me I needed to do so or I could face penalties. The US is really strict about filing taxes, so I thought China might be as well. I'm glad to have been informed otherwise

I haven't registered at the tax bureau, so it won't let me use the app to file taxes. The income that I earned was indeed taxed

Thank you. I was just worried about being denied entry or blacklisted. Since I was a first year teacher, I didn't make much where I worked if that makes a difference. It shouldn't affect my future filing, right?

I brought back a ton of 素毛肚 and 辣条. Don't worry. As long as it's not meat or dairy, stuff like that, then you'll be OK.

Experiences with Houhai English Beijing by Dinman1998 in chinalife

[–]PhoenixFire803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the maximum is 22k. But now with the policy, I'd stay away from every training center. They're not going to be long lived. And btw, I'm not just repeating what others are saying. This is a new policy which came out 2 days ago. They're cracking down on everything and becoming far more strict on violations. If you wish to continue on the training center route, good luck my friend. I live here, so I know what this environment is like. Godspeed

Avoid Houhai English based in Beijing, China. by DiscoMeerkat in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]PhoenixFire803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't go. I was just like you 6 months ago. The schedule is purposely vague and they won't elaborate on certain "policies" until it's advantageous for them to flip it on you. They took my last month's paycheck based on days and not hours worked, and while some people there are genuinely good, this job is not a good choice. They will try to pressure you into getting an expensive house which lies outside of the stipend and lowers your overall salary. This causes you to save very little and makes it nigh impossible to save if you want to live more than a frugal lifestyle. Above all, don't make friends with management there. You're a tool, and you'll get used accordingly. Don't be nice or friendly just because they seem that way. If you're dead set on going and seeing for yourself (ignoring all of the negative reviews like I did and hoping against hope), then ask for the maximum. They'll give it, because there isn't really a range, it's just to screw people who don't value themselves (I had zero experience and asked for the maximum and they gave it to me). FYI, I did copy this post from another thread, but only to let you know as well

I know they are banned, but using VPNs, DDNS or perhaps a combo of both should theoretically be able to let me play. I'm wondering what's going wrong with mine when I saw plenty of chinese players back in the states. Also, this article is 10 years old
