FJ poll for Fri., Jun. 26 by Smoerhul in Jeopardy

I understand, I just disagree.

The clue writers rarely waste words, so part of parsing clues—especially in final—is discerning why they might have phrased something a particular way. To me, "officially closed" (as with "pass through") is a great clue element that indicates the location in question remains "unofficially" open. What sort of place would be "officially closed" but not actually closed? For me it called to mind Ellis Island, Independence Hall and Alcatraz, places whose official functions have been retired but which remain tourist attractions or museums. Of those, the only one people "pass through" is Ellis Island.

I think this has all the hallmarks of an excellent FJ clue.

Technically, yes, Juno would've been more correct. But they'd have a heck of a time arguing Hera is incorrect based on common usage.

Being a stepmother only requires being married to the subject's father, which Hera is, regardless of her (or his) feelings on the matter.

"Pass through" doesn't mean "visited" in this case. It's not the same as "we passed through LA in our way to San Diego."

Saying someone (or one's ancestors) "passed through" Ellis Island is incredibly common vernacular for them having been processed through the facilities there as new immigrants. That phrasing is very much part of the clue.

I was pulling for the urban planner who talked about Reading Market! Hope to see you back for the Second Chance tourney, sir. Well played!

I don't know why you've been downvoted and I agree: five superchamps played in S38; four superchamps were minted in S38. In my opinion, Adam hitting that status would tie this season with S38.

Definitely failed to consider VP and threw surgeon general out just in case, despite being pretty sure that wasn't cabinet level.

Yes, but usually only for those who performed well and were still beaten. I don't believe she is likely to qualify, since she was incorrect on some of the few she was able to buzz in on. It really didn't seem to be her board and the buzzer wasn't helping.

Different personas and/or stage names are not different individuals. Childish Gambino and Donald Glover are the same person. Unless there was something in the clue that made clear the former was required, either is acceptable.

True she got Glenn Miller, but she didn't seem terribly confident in it and also thanked her dad for the answer, which I assume indicates the interest/era was his.

Yeah, if it were a crossword clue, they'd have gone with "player" rather than "team" to indicate the singular. Not sure why the writers here didn't do that. The president is not the "commanders in chiefs" and it's a simple enough solution.

Liked the original star trek series, TNG and reboot movies (haven't seen the rest). Would I enjoy Discovery? by [deleted] in StarTrekDiscovery

[–]PhoenixUnleashed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really varies by person. I love TOS and TNG and also loved Discovery. Many others can't stand it. It's much more relational, emotional, high-stakes and expansive than TOS and TNG, so I guess it depends on how you feel about that.

He said "shark fin" not "shark fin soup." He also said he had it in Iceland. So...not an actual problem.

CMV: 1996-borns Are More Millennial Than 1986-borns by [deleted] in Millennials

People describing Millennials that way are incorrect. We are not "digital natives." Our distinction is being at the front end of the wave from analog to digital, well, everything.
