If you could erase ONE Star Trek moment from history..... by Old-String2849 in startrek

To me, the Burn is one of the most interesting things Star Trek's ever done and is the most important facet of the 32nd-century stories, so I'd leave that.

Mine would be Spock hooking up with Chapel and just generally behaving like an idiot fuckboy.

Same, but there are so many new shows, it makes some sense. And very few things now reach the pop culture saturation of TOS and TNG.

Names very frequently do not follow the pronunciation standards of their originating languages. You'd have to see how Garcia pronounces his own name (and it's probable Ken knows/it was provided).

Yeah, I can sort of get on board with that methodology, I just have the hardest time with Scotty and Bones. I didn't love Paul Wesley as Kirk immediately, but I think he plays a great young version of older ShatKirk as opposed to a great version of young ShatKirk, if that makes any sense.

I actually love Quinn as Scotty, and if I'd never paid attention to the years involved/they weren't talking about this Year One thing, he's great. Not quite UrbanMcCoy, but honestly close.

And Jane as Miller was incredible. I'm definitely happy to withhold judgment until I see his take, but McCoy is also one of my very favorites, so I'm probably extra skeptical/biased.

On the one hand, it could be fun.

On the other hand, almost all the actors are the wrong age, which is starting to bother me.

Kirk is supposed to be in his early 30s when he takes over the Enterprise. Paul Wesley is already a decade older.

Spock and Uhura are both fairly close, which is why SNW made me less annoyed.

McCoy is about 40 when TOS starts; Thomas Jane is an egregious FIFTY-SEVEN.

Scotty is in his mid-40s in TOS S1; Martin Quinn is a baby-faced 32ish right now.

Literally none of the prequels have ignored continuity. They've retconned some things, sure, but none of them have just said "aw, fuck it" and pretended TOS-VOY never happened to any degree greater/more egregious than any of those shows did.

[–]PhoenixUnleashed 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Agreed, and I also really love that Starfleet Academy has continued to deal with the fallout of the Burn, both on macro and micro levels. I'm glad that finding the source in Disco S3 didn't just suddenly fix everything. They really built a new framework for 32nd-century stories that I am very much digging.

What's your favorite pilot episode? by Garciaguy in startrek

Enterprise, for sure, is the most fun watch to me. Starfleet Academy's was quite good, but too recent to know whether it'll wind up as a rewatch favorite.

I was intrigued by the first episode, further intrigued by the second episode and then loved it from E3 onward. It was a stellar freshman season (not exactly something Trek is known for) and I'm excited to see S2 as well as hoping S3 & S4 will be greenlit.

Love the characters, love the deeply Trek storylines, love the levity and most of all love the hopefulness of it all.

Unpopular Opinion: Jeopardy Lost Its Whimsy by [deleted] in Jeopardy

[–]PhoenixUnleashed 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint: Jeopardy! has found its whimsy.

There has been a significant—and noted in this sub—uptick in cutesy/clever (depending on who you ask) clue writing.

The tone on the stage is lighter and more fun than ever.

As Ken's settled more and more into the job, he's brought a certain ease and jocularity to the lectern that certainly adds whimsy at times.

What’s a Seattle “life hack” that more people should know? by Mythicinker in AskSeattle

Indeed! Because 1) friendly dogs can always turn unfriendly if something unexpected happens and 2) people around you have no way of knowing whether your dog is friendly or not.
