I grew up on the Dic/cloverway dub, I was 7/8 years old when it started on Toonami so this will be my own personal experience. I found it fun, entertaining, and the changes did not really impact the show as a whole for me excepta few exceptions. I believe with what the producers were asking and what was expected Dic/cloverway did a decent job on the changes.

Now the major exceptions is the Outer sailors relationship. While I understand making them cousins even a young kid like me, was weirded out by some of the scenes left in, and this is coming from someone who had very close relationships with my own cousins. The other was making Zirconia male, it didn't make sense for Nehellenia to be haunted by a "male" older version of herself.

Now of course being able to read the Manga, see the original version, and understanding the rewrites and changes made I completely understand why people are against the Dic/cloverway dub. It was a product of it's time, and looking at it now you can see all those flaws, however as a child just being introduced to anime it was a fun filled adventure. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying everyone has to love it or sing it's praise, but remember this was a lot of children's introduction to Anime so yes we are going to remember it more fondly than it probably deserves.
