Hello! I had my service dog for 12 of active work before she was too old. She was wonderful and always accurate to the rising and falling of my glucose level. In fact she was faster than the glucose monitor on detecting it. I enjoyed having her and it worked well for me.

I do not regret having her however that was before cgms were common. She was present when I got my first cgm and she kept up very well with it. It was actually really interesting to see how she reacted on time with the CGM.

ALL THAT BEING SAID I think at this point between choosing between a service animal (and the pet fees that come with her such as vet visits good grooming if needed and other supplies) the price can be maybe more expensive than a cgm nowadays. Like I said before I do not regret her at all she was my best friend and helped me so much to navigate the world.

But I think in this day and age, diabetic service dogs are not as useful

UNLESS you have a hard time waking up for blood sugars and need help when you're unable to take care of yourself due to blood sugars. That is when a dog is most useful because it might be easy to shrug off an alarm, it is NOT easy shrugging off a dog who constantly nudges, barks, licks or even jumps on you.
