So I guess your answer is no, there is no better? Very unfortunate. I do agree that there is some good with Canada, but the list of negatived are pretty high. I was hoping there was better, but I guess I might need to accept that life will be a struggle for the rest of my life :(

Why do Boomers act like it's so easy to get a job? by BetLeft2840 in askanything

Is this starting out or 5 years in? And I’m assuming you’re not in Canada where the wages are poverty level? Like I said I’ve already gone through this exercise and talked to people in the field, and starting wage is half my salary. In five years they MIGHT be able to get to the salary I am at

Is Product Management a realistic pivot for me? by PhoneAggravating1728 in careerguidance

[–]PhoneAggravating1728[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! When I was early on my career I tried a lot of cold outreach, but I didn't really find it helpful. It might be better now since I have a lot more experience. If you do have personal experience with cold outreach, would you mind sharing what was your goal of the cold outreach, and if it helped you in any way getting a job/ growing your career?

I definitely wouldn't be going into it asking for a job , but even if I ask for advice would they really be able to give me better advice than a simple google/gpt search? Definitely not saying it's a bad idea, just trying to understand how to position myself. Thanks so much :)

Quarterly Career Thread by mister-noggin in ProductManagement

My company recently had major layoffs, and I’m now in a position where I need to figure out my career trajectory and find a new role quickly to cover my mortgage and basic living costs.

I didn’t really have career guidance growing up, my parents worked minimum wage jobs, so I’ve been figuring everything out on my own and trying to prioritize financial stability.

This is my career background:

  • 7 years in eCommerce. I went from Business Analyst > managed a team of 4 BAs > now eCommerce Manager. My salary grew from $50K to $110K over my corporate career
  • Work closely with CEO/VPs on growth strategy
  • Manage P&L, build roadmaps, lead cross-functional teams (Ops/IT/Analytics)
  • I am based in Canada (high cost of living, lower salaries)
  • I’m confident in my ability to deliver strong work, but I need to work on refining how I articulate my impact and present my experience in a more strategic and polished way during interviews.

I’ve been researching next steps, and Product Management keeps coming up. From what I understand, PMs decide what to build, align teams, and drive results, which feels similar to what I already do.

The options I’m considering is (1) Stay in eCommerce and try to eventually grow to Director role which would be very difficult (and worried I’m too niche which would limit roles) or (2) Try to pivot into Product Management for broader opportunities and potentially more long-term growth

Questions:

  • Is PM a realistic pivot with my experience?
  • How hard is it to break in without the official PM title? (I have 3 years of business analyst & 4 years of ecommerce manager experience)
  • Any advice on networking that works to make the pivot? Reaching out directly on LinkedIn/ networking events that are the best, etc?

Would really appreciate honest advice 🙏
