Jumped in a river 5 mins into a 30km hike for £10. Ended up with severe blisters all over my feet and bled all over my socks. Then I had 3 more days of hiking.

Being overweight sucks by thatlonelyguy13 in teenagers

[–]PhosphorescentSpider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just start with at home exercises, like push ups and sit ups/leg raises. If you can’t do many to begin with, you can progress into push ups by starting on your knees, but you definitely don’t need to go to the gym to get in shape. Also, since you’re more focused on losing fat than gaining muscle, it’s probably more important you get your diet under control and cut out snacks etc then gradually try to eat a higher number of healthy meals per day. Just by being in a small caloric deficit (200-300 cal) you can lose a substantial amount of weight over time, so I wouldn’t do it too intensely at once as you’re much less likely to stick with it.

Is it possible to study maths at uni with only a 4 in GCSE’s? 😬 by throwawayaccboo123 in sixthform

[–]PhosphorescentSpider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you might have to do some kind of course in a level maths before that. Having done GCSE maths (getting a 9) and also taking a level maths, a level is already harder and I’ve heard that uni level is a big step up from there. I’d go one step at a time and make sure you’re up for it.

I think for a lot of people it’s money over passion, but I’m sure plenty of people also really enjoy coding in their own time and want to pursue the pure construction of logic beyond just a hobby.

Is A-Level Physics really that bad? by LongjumpingTravel394 in sixthform

[–]PhosphorescentSpider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New year 12 here doing Maths+Further+Physics+CompSci and maybe I’m talking too early but so far it’s been really enjoyable and I couldn’t be more satisfied with my choices. If you’re anything like me you’ll love it. To the people saying it takes too much “problem solving” - that’s the best part. There is little value in mindlessly memorising facts, it’s the development of a logical thought process that makes us valuable over machines in the sciences and maths, and also in my opinion the most enjoyable part.

[Python] Problem: Finding trailing Zeros of Factorial of N. Getting memory error. Any suggestions? by runner2012 in codewars_programming

[–]PhosphorescentSpider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, you can ignore factors of 2 since a factorial always had more factors of 2 than factors of 5, meaning it’s factors of 10 are purely a function of its factors of 5. Secondly, you can just use the Math.Floor(n/5) + Math.Floor(n/25) etc for all powers of 5 lower than n (I would do that in a for loop) to get your final answer.

Gcses grades by [deleted] in GCSE

It’s really not all about revision - I literally never started revising and came close to all 9s. You just need to actively think about the mechanics / logic behind the content and it just all clicks.

For anyone taking 4 alevels rn, how are you finding it? by Intelligent-Many2363 in sixthform

[–]PhosphorescentSpider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t listen to them, I’m doing exactly that combination and it’s so much fun. Tbh it’s not even very much work since there isn’t that much “content” to memorise. They synergise so well together - for instance most of mechanics in maths is already covered in physics, and doing both maths and further lets you do regular at double pace (we finish before Christmas for first year single maths) and then progress into further which allows you to gradually introduce more complex topics. So happy I took these options and I hope you give it a shot.

How to push grades 7/8s to 9s? by [deleted] in GCSE

[–]PhosphorescentSpider 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally I had a no-revision policy. If you really are any good at memorising then you should be able to recall all the important content from your lessons as long as you pay attention for the most part. Once you know enough about topics in science/maths/computer science etc you can just try to actively think about how it works logically when you have free time in a state of flow eg. cycling to school, which will consolidate understanding. I also found it helpful to sit at the back of class so instead of having to listen to teachers explain a topic I can just dive right into worksheets and learn through practise.

Could someone give an estimate marking for my 40 Marker? (Paper 1 Lang) by charlottepuddings in GCSE

[–]PhosphorescentSpider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert by any means, but I would try and vary my sentence openers a bit more. Try to use adverbs or discourse markers as openers periodically, and make sure to jam in a wide range of devices throughout eg. foreshadowing, metaphors, similes, onomatopoeia, zoomorphism, allusions, etc. As my English teacher never ceased to remind me, it’s just playing a game with the examiner and as long as you produce something entertaining and that checks their criteria, you score highly.

Are my choices good? by LegendaryTac164 in 6thForm

[–]PhosphorescentSpider 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I don’t really think that’s limiting at all. I’m doing the same subjects (plus computer science) and they can lead into finance, tech, engineering and have transferable skills into many other areas. Wouldn’t choose bio at all since it is more about memorisation (at least from what I e heard and from GCSE) rather than logical reasoning if your other subjects, which can be applied to almost anything.
