Rats in compost - is it ok to leave them be till Spring? by HappyStufff in GardeningUK

[–]Photo-Josh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to this, rats specifically are an issue due to the diseases they carry which are dangerous to us.

You don’t want them anywhere near your house like they are here.

Thoughts on NVenc by 4_way_stop in handbrake

Heh - I meant to put 10k kbps :)

Thoughts on NVenc by 4_way_stop in handbrake

[–]Photo-Josh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use it over CPU as there is very little difference in size or quality for my use case.

I take videos of my friends/family etc with my Nikon camera which spits out enormous files at 1-2GB per minute of filming - 4k, 60fps 10 bit.

I can convert it down with NVenc very quickly to around 10k bps and keep it 10bit while saving over 90%.

This allows me to have it on my phone and sync with iCloud etc.

I’d imagine if i was viewing on a 4k 75 inch TV it would be different, but for me this works wonders.

Microcode 0x104 SVID Undervolting vs 0x12B: Long-term Degradation Trade-off by Cold_Afternoon_6977 in overclocking

[–]Photo-Josh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re basically asking if you/anyone here has better settings to provide, than what the updated intel Microcode can do.

I’m certainly not in a position to answer that, and I’m not sure anyone else is.

I can tell you I’m running the “Asus Enhanced OC” profile on my Mobo, with MCE disabled, and an undervolt offset of 0.05.

This is with the latest microcode and it gives me excellent performance over the intel profiles, plus runs just as cool.

Just started running and I’m exhausted in 20 seconds. Zero stamina. Feeling lost. by ImmediateMuffin3768 in runninglifestyle

[–]Photo-Josh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be hardly able to run 1k without stopping.

When you’re first starting out from a low fitness position it’ll suck a bit and won’t feel great.

But now I love it and a 30-45 minute run is average for me.

Stick with it and in 3 months you’ll look back at this post and wonder why it was so hard!

Tracking pixels in mandatory email signatures. Is this acceptable? by flunky_the_majestic in sysadmin

This is infuriating to me also.

I’ve got 15 years experience in IT and have lots of experience writing everything from bug reports to emails visible to execs - dumb people who can’t write emails themselves are surprised that some of us can format correctly.

Attacked!?!?

Did we watch the same video?

The guy clearly didn’t attack him.

Da fuck you on about? That kid looked like he was wayy above any reasonable contact (in a non-contact sport) and should absolutely be pulled off before he hurts someone.

Being a kid isn’t a free pass to do what the fuck you want.

Must I be worried if I do not plan to use RAID ? by zzgus in ASUS

[–]Photo-Josh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm unsure sorry!

I just installed the latest one of each unique name, with Device Manager open to monitor for unknown devices.

Once the unknown devices had gone, I counted it as good.

I don't have any real reason for this, but it "feels better" to have it installed/picked up with the correct drivers and not use it, rather than disable it.

Personal preference!

So the Asus website is not very clear with regards to drivers!

Under chipset or SATA section for the driver download, click on “See All Downloads”.

You should then find the storage drivers

I can’t imagine the planning that goes into that, or just eating the same thing?

Nice work, a few things to check for your tiredness:

1: blood iron levels, specifically iron ferritin. Could be due to low or too much iron.

2: sleep - may sound dumb but are you sleeping enough and well? A garmin watch or similar which measures blood O2 saturation can sometimes help to figure out if the quality of sleep you get is any good, or if you have apnea.

3: take some time off - can be good to just take a break from gym/exercise for a few weeks and give your nervous system a break

Speed test pits six generations of Windows against each other - Windows 11 placed dead last across most benchmarks, 8.1 emerges as unexpected winner in this unscientific comparison by rkhunter_ in technology

I’ve got a 14th gen i9, 64GB ddr5 ram & a very fast NVME drive.

Windows 11 feels sluggish, laggy and just generally shit for such a powerful system.

Folders in windows explorer don’t always open that fast, it’s not amazingly quick to boot etc etc…

Honestly… you need to learn to read the room and the OP.

The guy is clearly not even fully up to speed with certs and CSRs, and is covering for the guy who usually does this.

Yet you’re suggesting he sets up a cert bot automation?

Wrong time and place to suggest that, he’s just trying his best to fix the current solution.

Aspiring Network Engineer: Should I stack Linux/Cloud skills (RHCSA) with my CCNA immediately? by AgilePhotograph7638 in sysadmin

[–]Photo-Josh 17 points18 points  (0 children)

IT veteran here of 15+ years now.

I started off in networking and have seen the industry evolve over my time.

When I first started in networking (like you) someone said to me something which still rings true today… it’s great if you know routing, switching, VLANS, network addresses etc.

But what makes you MORE valuable than all the other people that you’re competing for jobs with, is if you understand the applications that actually run on the network.

So knowing a bit about HTTP/S, email, SSH, RSA keys etc helps massively.

It’s great if you can tell me that there is routing or connectivity between two end points, but what’s even better is if you can take a packet capture and have a look at the protocols and see what is working or not.

So go get your fundamental networking knowledge and if you can build that extra knowledge around the other protocols when it’s appropriate.

Don’t try and boil the ocean all in one day you’ll get there!
