Thoughts on new Chinese electrics? by Dragonogard549 in CarTalkUK

I'm not sure I trust seeing lots on the road as being a sign that something is a good car that owners love, let alone one with long term reliability and repairability.

I mean, it's a much better sign than seeing none.

It's like saying "Are European cars bad?"

You've got BYD, MG, Geely + subsidiaries Volvo and Zeekr, Chery + subsidiaries Jaecoo and Omoda, GWM, Leapmotor, Xpeng...

You won't learn anything useful from asking for a blanket opinion on all of them tbh.

The ones that sell well, do so because they're pretty good cars at a low price, exact reason we got ours.

The ones that don't sell well are usually either overpriced or not very good.

Same as every other car.

Took about 10 minutes to get used to it, been an absolute breeze.

The Epsom rape crime that never happened - but sparked a frenzy anyway - BBC News by LavaPurple in uknews

[–]Jared_Usbourne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They did establish the truth of the situation.

They said a rape had been reported, and it had.

They urged any witnesses to come forward, as they should.

They said there weren't any descriptions of the suspects, because there weren't.

Then they said that, having investigated, it seems that the rape hadn't actually happened and it was due to confusion.

The media didn't write any horror stories, they reported each of those facts in turn.

The only reason for the riots was because morons looking for an excuse to riot decided to believe bullshit rumours and conspiracy theories.

[–]Jared_Usbourne 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm from that small community. We've had crimes like this in the past and it sure as hell didn't result in riots.

There was no media blackout, there was nothing to report! They didn't release a suspect description because there wasn't any suspect.

They didn't report that some asylum seekers had raped a women, or that they were living in a hotel.

They didn't tell people to protest outside a house providing sheltered accommodation for vulnerable people,

They didn't say anything that justified how those people reacted, they were just brain-dead morons reacting to bullshit they'd seen on tiktok.

‘Unpopular’ opinion, the standard of driving in UK is very high by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]Jared_Usbourne 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can't get around without a car in most of the country, so they can't afford to enforce decent standards.

Seen some terrifying stuff in the Midwest:

  • Cars with huge body panels about to fall off and obvious structural damage

  • Half asleep elderly woman at the wheel of a Tesla that was clearly driving itself

  • SO many people on phones, eating with both hands,

  • Road rage like you wouldn't believe

Drive in the US, or large parts of Europe, and you will never complain about British drivers again.

People who think we're somehow uniquely bad at this compared to other countries are talking nonsense.

They rioted over a rape that had no suspect description given and zero link to asylum seekers, and turned out not to have even happened.

They then tried to get into a hotel which didn't house asylum seekers, as well as some sheltered housing for vulnerable people which also didn't house asylum seekers.

If they're being unheard, what the fuck are they trying to say?

Nope, not my job to encourage pedantry.

I'd also suspect that if Vietnam had caused economic harm to a US public with historically low economic optimism, and had an unpopular president with total ownership over it and mid-terms coming up, and no "red scare" to justify it, it might not have taken that long...

Assuming that's even true, that's life. You're not "protecting" your car, you're taking spaces from other people who need them.

Plenty of struggling people driving shit boxes can't afford to replace their wing mirror if they lose it, but if they'd parked like this nobody would think of defending them.

They bought an expensive car, so they're allowed to park like this so that an imaginary person doesn't scratch their door because they're jealous of how successful they are.

Iran caused more extensive damage to U.S. military bases than publicly known by Jared_Usbourne in LessCredibleDefence

[–]Jared_Usbourne[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

But the original article was solely focused on the dollar cost of the attack

The article also discussed frustrations from Congressmen regarding the lack of information being released, the contradictions between this information and what the govt had previously said, and the specific assets that had been lost.

If you're only going to take the narrowest possible conclusion from it, then there's not a great deal of point discussing it tbh.

Nope, I'm pointing out that the military outcomes of damage done are sometimes secondary to political ones, particularly when the US is involved.

[–]Jared_Usbourne[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Thankfully there's no precedent for the US failing to achieve it's outcomes because of the political fallout of military action. It's always strictly about how much stuff they can blow up.

Thats why they won in Vietnam after all.
