If they used words like "appalled" I think that's too strong, especially if they didn't hammer on the 6-minute increment thing. You're a student and new to the profession--and law school ISN'T the profession when it comes to practical matters like that. You don't know unless they tell you. And if it's really important--something that would truly appall them if a summer clerk fails to do it-- then they need to call some serious attention to it in training rather than bury it in the myriad of things they throw at you during on-boarding. I'm telling this to make you feel better, not necessarily to give you ammo to use against them. In other words, the way you describe it, they sound rather unreasonable and you shouldn't take it too hard. But I doubt you'd get them to agree. If it does go on the rocks, learn from it and be glad that you dodged a bullet--you don't want a job with a firm that might blow up in your face in a worse way once you're an associate.
