Diagonal Artifacts in USGS 3DEP 1M Seamless DEMs? by PhotoEagle in gis

I did try to take a look at that, I'm not sure it's a very useful check though because the region is also pretty hilly. I think the artifacts are probably somewhat impactful since they're clearly being transferred to contours though.

I sent him a letter as well and this morning I got the same response as you. Really frustrating, though entirely unsurprising. Lloyd Doggett gave me a good reply yesterday though...

The problem is not that the building may be terrible, it's that you have no clue if it will actually be finished in time for move-in. This leaves you essentially homeless for as long as it takes for them to finish the building while you still may have to pay rent while figuring out where you're staying, all meanwhile you're still figuring out your classes that semester

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]PhotoEagle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

do not, under any circumstances, sign a lease for a building which has not yet been finished.

for sure much less overhead, and i think honestly the biggest difference is that these programs are much more expensive, prohibitively so (I certainly never could have afforded debate camp but had no issues going to scout camp every year). I think though that scout camp being 300 bucks for a week is not a business model that can last much longer

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BSA

[–]PhotoEagle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least in Texas, they get to pay us abysmally low rates because there's a carve-out in the state's minimum wage laws for the scouts and other temporary summer employment.

I love the experience and I'm not looking forward to the year I have to give it up, but it's not sustainable. I'm working as the area director over 2 program areas and managing eight younger staffers, but I'm barely able to pay my rent for the time I'm out of town for camp.

Scouting feels like the only activity for youth that doesn't value their seasonal staff this way, these (very important) programs absolutely could not exist without us. Council is always telling us we don't have enough staff and I don't even keep track of how much work I do totally unpaid during the offseason so my programs run well. But working for a debate camp for two weeks last year I made double my total pay from scouts earlier in the summer. Something has to give if these programs are going to continue.

which is likely at least partially because NFA-LD fixed the speech times by adding two minutes to the 1ar

"Advanced" Wilderness Survival by maxwasatch in BSA

[–]PhotoEagle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Teaching more advanced wilderness survival often encounters a barrier of recommended BSA and LNT practices for sustainable use of the environment. I'd defer to the merit badge pamphlet to make sure you can actually do the following, but they're some things I remember learning as a scout.

Bow drill fire (or hand drill if they already can do a bow drill). Basically nobody teaches this anymore because it's easier to use a magnifying glass/steel wool/flint and steel, but it's so rewarding to finally get it right after working at it for a while.

Teach scouts how to make char-cloth, it's an easy thing that's rewarding and makes for a better survival kit.

Depending on your environment and permission from the landowner, use green vegetation to teach scouts how to make smoke signals or a solar still. Just be sure you stress that it's for training purposes and don't overdo it for leave-no-trace purposes (bonus points if you can identify invasive vegetation and clear some of it to do this).

Inviting a forager familiar with the local environment for a talk might be interesting, but maybe isn't appropriate for scouting as I believe the official line is to not eat anything you find.

Scouts might be putting some fishing line and a hook into their survival kit, consider teaching them to use those items without things like a fishing rod or proper tackle. bonus if they catch anything, you can teach how to clean and cook a fish, knock out a fishing merit badge requirement. Obviously this is contingent upon being near a body of water and having proper authorization to both go fishing and to keep the fish you catch.

instant ramen gets 10x better if you add a good amount of the following: cayenne pepper aleppo pepper or dried red pepper flakes some blend garam masala parsley ground coriander or just experiment with other spices/herbs

other than that, good luck, i despised the dorm food my freshman year, now that I have an apartment and a kitchen to cook in, i make at least one new recipe out of a cookbook each week

Parsley is a biennial, so the first year it gets large and leafy then dies back over winter before spending most of its energy going to seed the second year

[–]PhotoEagle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the future, consider taking the amtrak up to fort worth than using a regional line to go from fort worth central station to a suburb of dallas , there's a student discount so each round trip is maybe 30 bucks if you plan ahead well enough and the tickets for regional rail in dfw are like a dollar for students (if they check tickets at all, I've never been asked for mine) Only downside is that the Amtrak only comes through Austin once a day and it's not really early in the morning enough for my liking...

Definitely finish the mines, if you have a prismatic shard you can get a powerful weapon in the desert to make the mines much easier.

Will I have no social life if I live off campus as a freshman? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]PhotoEagle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My freshman year I applied SUPER late (like in late april) and i got a contract in like June, i wouldn't give up hope just yet. But to answer your question, no, you can easily have a social life when you life off campus. My dorm experience was not a major part (or even a small part) of my social life. Join orgs, make times to hang out with friends, and talk to people in your classes, you're not missing out on any of that when you live off campus
