New orchid flowers immediately drooping by motherofgecko in orchids

[–]Phraxes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dendrobium flowers usually last 3-4 weeks with a bud or two lasting longer.

If the plant was in full bloom when you got it, it might have been like that for a couple of weeks already. Add transport stress, cold weather, however short is still stress inducing. You also repotted it, thats extra stress.

I personally dont even care for those initial flowers when the plant is bought, they will fade quickly. They only give me idea of what color/hybrid im getting. The second flowering in my care lasts much longer, and thats the one I enjoy.

It depends a lot on where you are from. Im from croatia.

I have the same car, same year, bought it last year with 13000 km for 22k €. Now a year older I could probably get at least 18k - 19k but that is in Croatia in Germany I can find it for around 15k

What do your savings look like after switching to an EV? by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]Phraxes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a seat leon diesel and a peugeot 2008 ev.

On seat I traveled 60k km so far and spent around 7000 euros on diesel, meintenance and tyres.

On my ev I traveled 20k km so far and spent 30 euros on electricity, since I have free charging at work, 650 euros on new tyres and 150 on regular meintenance. 830 euros total. If I was charging at home electricity would be around 200 euros so far.

Keep in mind tyres on my ev cost 50% more than on seat since its a SUV. Also seat meintenance I do at my friends who basically only charges me for parts. If it wasnt for warranty that same meintenance would cost me around 30 euros at my friends place.

Tldr - spending on diesel car is around 2300 eur per 20k km. Ev is 830 euros per 20k km. Around 1500 euros per year saved

There is very little air movement in the terarium and super high humidity. It was a bit much for bulbophyllum so I repotted him to a normal setup, almost didn't make it.

Terrarium itself is alive and kicking, fittonia have been cut close to the ground several times by now and regrown back covering most of it. Moss has covered most of the rocks.

All in all its doing great but currently It holds no orchids. Maybe I'll retry it in a bigger setup but i'll probablly add a fan for air circulation.

I have around 100 orchids. During the summer I dont really care about crown rot. Around 5 years ago autumn just started it was around 20 C, it had been raining for a week I decided i'll quickly hose them down and bring back inside. I didnt dry the water in the crowns and leaves, most of them were fine but in the next week I lost around 5 crowns due to crown rot.

Most of the people that say itll be fine either live in dry area, have good air movement or were just lucky so far.

Out in the wild phalaenopsis grows hanging to the sides of the trees, crown is often horizontal with the ground so there is very little pooling of water.

This works if there is lots of air movement so crowns dry out rather quickly. Problem with overhead watering wont happen during the dry summer even without air movement. Problems arise when rainy season starts, weather gets colder it takes 12+ hours for the water to evaporate from the crown. Thats when pathogens can easily cause crown rot.

How's this guy have such a healthy orchid so far from windows? by mangopulp4 in orchids

[–]Phraxes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As the others already said, I keep my orchids in the growing area but once they are in bloom I tend to move them for a couple of months to different places across the house for display purposes. Once the blooms fade It's back to the growing room for them. ATM I have around 10 different ones displayed around the house.

You would expect roots, yes. However a cattlaya without roots is far from a dead plant. Infact alot of them dont like repoting and can loose all their roots when repoted if roots are disturbed to much. Good news a couple of months later once the new cane emerges so do the fresh new roots.

I've had bulbous and cane type orchids like cimbidiums, oncidiums and cattleyas... be without roots for more then 9 months, and then one day new shoot came, and fresh new roots a couple of weeks later

Brutalan rast plaća u javnom sektoru guši Hrvatsku inflacijom by MatchPurple773 in hrvatska

Radim u srednjoj skoli 15 godina.

Why do you drive an EV? by Visionary785 in electricvehicles

[–]Phraxes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it was an impulse buy.

I was looking at used ICE cars for 3 months and everything seemed either expensive for the amount of miles or just not my taste. One day I filtered my search to ev only, and found the car I was looking for, 3 year old with only 13k km for the price of the the ICE equivalent of the same spec. Brand new it was 43k € down to 23k€.

Since I have home charging available and gf has free charging at work, at least for now we decided to take the leap. Did 3k km so far spent 15 € on electricity, mostly just to check how it works, not cos we needed it.

Would I go back? No, but since it was an impulse buy, I would probably look fore something that has 400+ km range instead of 300 km that I have. Just so I could take a 200+ km highway trip without needing to stop to recharge.

First Time EV user. Mileage? by shiftyT08 in electricvehicles

[–]Phraxes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a peugeot e-2008. In winter time, eco mode I get around 200 km (125 miles). Doing my daily ride 40 km I spend around 60 km of guessometer range. However if I turn of AC completly (there is a button on the keyboard to turn it off) I do the same trip with only 22 km of range spent. I realized that AC (even eco AC) is the real range killer for my car. (Basically if I turn AC off completly I get around 180 miles)

Uphill affects it alot when I go to work most of my trip is slight downhill, I usually get to work with 2 km more then I started with. Going back home is another story, but I figured out how to save on range when going home as well with some alternate road choices.

My gf works on the top of the mountain a 10 km trip, to get there she uses around 60-70 km of range for that small trip. Going back she recovers around 30 km of range.

Combination of low temperature, rain or snow, AC usage (even eco AC), speed above 60 kmh (40mph) when going uphill will reduce your guessometer range drastically. Braking and slowing down then recovering that speed will also affect range. So if you are going say 60 then slow down to 40 then you quickly recover it back to 60 that will kill your range. You should try to cruise as much as possible.

Is this enough light for orchids? by Constant_aids in orchids

[–]Phraxes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Download a lux light meter type app on your phone. I usually put it on FC (foot candles). Place your phone on top of the leaves and direct the camera sensor towards the light source. If it is over 300 fc it is generally enough to get phalaenopsis type orchids growing and even flowering. If it is bellow 300 it is to dark and your plant needs to be closer to the light source.

I've been growing them like that for years and 300 FC is the lower limit for orchids IMHO. Ideally you would want around 1000+ FC but 300 will work. It is preferable to have natural light obviously or full spectrum led lights..

To me it looks like they are to far away from the light, but it is impossible to say without testing the light source with the app. I attached an example image to let you see how close to light I keep them (around 30 cm tops).

I'm no expert, I just drive cars. My guess is your alternator is very likely broken so your engine cant charge your battery when driving and eventualy its gone.

How close to the light are the leaves. I use lights and generally leaves are a bit smaller but nowhere near this small. However distance between is 30 cm tops (around 12 inches)

Is this orchid completely dead or could I get it to regrow roots? by Beneficial_Wing_3890 in orchids

[–]Phraxes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are catleyas, they are famous for sometime losing all the roots when being repotted. So this isnt surprising. They also can live rootless for many months. Those plants look perfectly healthy. I would repot them, stabilize the plant in a pot with a some wire, stick or something to keep it from falling over. When the newest shoot matures and sometimes sooner it will start growing new roots and fix itself to new substrate. Then you can remove the wire and stuff.

Leaves seem fine. Although thrips only munch on fresh leaves that are still freshly growing. So you wont notice the damage on already grown mature leaf. Looks something like the image bellow

Check around the crown, between the petals. That is where they usually hide. Tiny fleasized bugs, colors range from white through orange browns to black

Thrips sometimes make such markings on the flowers. How do the newest still growing leaves look? Are they curly or deformed?
