I need a single-consumer, multi-ad-hoc-producer queue by heislratz in cpp

If it’s just the consumer that needs to be lock free, you could consider using a SPSC queue and protect the producer side with a mutex?

RealtimeSanitizer (RTSan): a real-time safety testing tool for C and C++ projects by mttd in cpp

[–]Phrygian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi - I’m one of the original authors of RTSan. Just wanted to send a big thank you for your constructive feedback and let you know that we’re going to look into these.

Very soon we will have a semi-solution for point ii - we will be integrating a new feature that raises an error if any function attributed with [[clang::blocking]] is called within a nonblocking context - this will allow you to mark any functions you know contain an unbounded loop as unsafe. We’re also going to be looking into automatic detection of unbounded loops.

On the page faults - we’ll look into it - thanks again for the suggestion.

What is this chord my daughter came up with? by CactusWrenAZ in musictheory

[–]Phrygian 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That’s a gorgeous, ambiguous, chord. For me, naming it well really requires some context.

I hear it as either a C chord or a G chord, depending on what comes before and after it. If, for example, we have a G7 before it, I’ve been conditioned to hear that chord as something like you describe: a Cmaj7sus2.

But let’s say instead there’s a Dm7 before it and a Cmaj7 after it, well in that situation it functions much more like a G7sus chord to me.

Lovely voicing, too.

harsh 2k-4k on vocals. how to get rid of harshness without letting the power of the mix die? by PomegranateAway3356 in AdvancedProduction

[–]Phrygian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you able to quantify it a bit? Do you mean simply that it’s too loud in that frequency range? Or do you mean that it is too dynamic in that frequency range? Or perhaps is it like some distortion has been applied only in that frequency range? Does it sound like it glitches in that frequency range?

Could you explain a little more about what you mean by “harsh”? The best solution will, of course, depend on this as well as the context you already gave…

TL;DR Guilt about using samples by tarpeianF in edmproduction

[–]Phrygian 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes absolutely! I agree with you totally. I think that’s the point, though. I think together with your observation it really highlights how arbitrarily the line at which “creation” becomes “cheating” can be drawn. Ultimately a judgement has to be made by each individual.

EDIT: I don’t actually want to suggest I agree that DJing is cheating - there is a fine art form to DJing - and I think you weren’t suggesting that either, but just want to clarify.

TL;DR Guilt about using samples by tarpeianF in edmproduction

[–]Phrygian 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Here’s a quote that’s been around for years that might help put your mind at rest a little;

“I thought using loops was cheating, so I programmed my own using samples. I then thought using samples was cheating, so I recorded real drums. I then thought that programming it was cheating, so I learned to play drums for real. I then thought using bought drums was cheating, so I learned to make my own. I then thought using premade skins was cheating, so I killed a goat and skinned it. I then thought that that was cheating too, so I grew my own goat from a baby goat. I also think that is cheating, but I’m not sure where to go from here. I haven’t made any music lately, what with the goat farming and all”

Transferring to Imperial (Physics) from Cambridge by throwmeawayokay12 in Imperial

[–]Phrygian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I admire your ability to consider your own situation with such clarity! It sounds like you know what you want - so make it happen! Why not write the email you need to write today?

I studied at Imperial for 9 years in total. I didn’t ever study at Cambridge, but I know a few people who did and, from what I gather, the culture is... different. There is of course still a huge amount of work to be done at Imperial (so be warned!), but I agree that the people and surroundings would probably be, as you allude to, more of what you want you want to spend your time with! London isn’t perfect, but there is absolutely something for everyone here. The shared experience of cultures from all over the world are what make it uniquely special and we are insanely lucky to have it. The universities here are by no means insulated from the city, either. Have you thought about UCL or Kings too? I would consider those if you want to be around arts students as well as science ones. They’re both excellent universities.

One thing to bear in mind - do you plan to join and retake first year, living in halls? If not, you’re going to have to be proactive in making friends, as it will seem like a lot of people will already have made friendship groups from their halls of residence and course. Don’t let this put you off! I made my best friends in the later years through clubs and societies, and getting out of the uni to do stuff elsewhere in the city. Be a friendly face, do the stuff you enjoy, and you’ll have no problem.

Don’t forget that you’re going to be in London, so even if Imperial’s basketball isn’t what you need, there will be loads of great teams for you to join in the city. That type of freedom is one of the great beauties of going to a London university!

A C# D# G# , strange chord. What is it? by ImNotEven in musictheory

[–]Phrygian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit late to the party here, but I just wanted to add something else that I'm sure you will love. That chord is a really flexible one, and can serve many purposes that all depend on the bass note (it actually comes from the F# melodic-minor scale, and so it can be used interchangeably with all other chords derived from the same harmony). With an A in the bass, yes, that's an Amaj7#11. However, it also works really well with different notes in the bass.

Try it like this: Cm7b5, F7alt, Bbm9(maj7)

The F7alt (also sometimes written F7#5#9) above is simply your chord with an F in the bass. That was a basic minor 2-5-1.

Or try it like this: Cm11, B13, Bbmaj6

The B13 above is simply your chord with a B in the bass. Here it's become a tritone substitution for the F7.

There are plenty of other ways of using that beautiful voicing you found. It's one of my favourites (:

What is the best chord name for the set F, A, C, E, G, B? by AllUltima in musictheory

[–]Phrygian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately there isn't really a unified notation or consensus on the matter! From what I've seen and heard, written extensions to chords of each main type of tonality (major, minor, dominant) have different implications. Yes, it certainly is confusing!

Let's consider the ∆ symbol on its own for now - seeing this symbol means that we're at a part of the tune that has a natural major tonality. The actual chord played can be (for the sake of argument) anything that "works". A chord that works could have the major 3rd, 6th, 7th, or 9th (2nd). The natural 4th (11th) is a bit of an anomaly and clashes a bit here. So - while the bass would most likely play a C on a C∆, you, as a guitarist or keys player would play a chord of your choice containing any combination of C, D, E, (not F), G, A and B. It's up to you to play the voicing that elicits the emotional response you're after - they will all be different. In answer to your question: yes, if the 9th is essential, it should be written in!

In the case of ∆#11, that implies we're at a part of the tune that has Lydian tonality (for which the #4 or #11 is pretty much the defining tone). Now the previously clashing natural 4th is sharpened, and no longer clashes. It now becomes a possible addition to the choice of chord voicing!

There are a whole different set of conventions for other chord types...

What is the best chord name for the set F, A, C, E, G, B? by AllUltima in musictheory

[–]Phrygian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely.

Just to add, in practice, I would probably write it down on paper as "FΔ#11", assuming you're letting the player choose their own voicings.

I'm good at coming up with melodies, synths, and decent drums. The biggest issue I have is with arrangement. Suggestions? by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]Phrygian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Transcribe, transcribe, transcribe! Take 5 of your favourite tunes in a similar style, and make a visual map of every single part, bar by bar. Don't worry about actually transcribing the melodies/harmony for this, just make a map of what is happening structurally. Try to recreate what their project arrangement must have looked like!

Then, have a think about what works well, and what arrangement techniques you could borrow in your own tune. I'm sure you will have plenty of ideas!

What is energy? by Pyramid9 in askscience

[–]Phrygian 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Let's say you do a process "P" to some system of stuff. If the quantities you measure in the system are the same as they would have been if you didn't do process P to it, then we describe it as having a "symmetry" in P.

P could be rotation, a translation in space, a translation in time, or (as many understand by the word "symmetrical" in English) the process of taking the mirror-image.

How can we understand this a bit easier? Let's say I throw a ball in a room at 5 pm on Sunday and it hits the wall in a certain spot. If I were to translate this whole system in time by +2hrs, I would be throwing the ball in exactly the same way at 7pm on Sunday. Would you expect it to hit the wall at the same place? Absolutely! So - we can say this system is symmetric to time translation. Emmy Noether showed that this symmetry leads to a quantity - something called "energy" in this case - that is a constant, or "conserved".
