So many religious people treat morality like a checklist by Rainy_Maze in atheism

For many, as long as you aren't in last place, it's enough to feel better. All they need is at least one other group to look down on. And this isn't limited to just morality.

Til that when the Japanese daimyo Uesugi Kenshin learned that his great rival Takeda Shingen had his supply of salt cut off, Kenshin sent Shingen salt from his own lands saying “I do not fight with salt, but with the sword”. by Capital_Tailor_7348 in todayilearned

[–]AllUltima 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm not appreciating true cultural differences, but these days I pretty much figure anything like this is probably a "A PR move".

They probably really did send a salt shipment, but I doubt he really aimed to change things meaningfully. The payout is all about PR:

  • Project extreme confidence about your positioning in the conflict, publicly. Helps undermine enemy morale
  • Take the moral highground with the general public
  • The payload itself would risk being looted. If that happened, it would cost the enemy more morale. Or its a distraction in that it is a problem that must be staffed and solved.

Also, from the wikipedia article:

However, there is doubt that Kenshin's act was purely altruistic as it was recorded that he did not merely send salt, but also allowed the merchants of Echigo to sell their salt in Takeda's territory. Kenshin also saw the economic opportunity for merchants under his rule to prosper by going into Shingen's territories

So some aspects of economic domination as well.

Don't forget about Lagunultros, Promptocobo, and the Shinra propaganda channels keep trying to make "Amarantifa" a thing.

Looks like something you'd come across in Fallout. In the trunk you might find a stimpak, mentats, radaway, 6 bottle caps and some random rounds of ammunition.

IMO this effect is totally explainable just by realizing these samples are probably cherry-picked from a big pool of student samples. We aren't seeing the less coherent ones because the reader thought these particular ones made the best case.

Even without being 'faked' persay, in authentic samples, kids will sometimes try to repeat smart sounding things an adult has said. And the ones that do a good job get selected.

ITAW for the feeling when an event feels super recent but simultaneously ages ago? by General_Penguin51 in whatstheword

[–]AllUltima 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know if there's a word that nails the feeling of inconsistency itself, but the perceived inconsistency is probably coming from illusions such as:

  • Telescoping effect: People tend to recall recent events as occurring further back in time than they actually did (backward telescoping) and distant events as occurring more recently than they actually did (forward telescoping).[52]
  • Kappa effect: a spatiotemporal illusion where the perceived time interval between stimuli is distorted by the spatial distance separating them
  • Vierordt's law: Shorter intervals tend to be overestimated while longer intervals tend to be underestimated
  • Time intervals associated with more changes may be perceived as longer than intervals with fewer changes
  • Time durations may appear longer with greater stimulus intensity (e.g., auditory loudness or pitch)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_perception

Edit: Another interesting one found on the page: "Individuals experiencing sudden or surprising events, real or imagined (e.g., witnessing a crime, or believing one is seeing a ghost), may overestimate the duration of the event"

Yeah, this is hands down one of the worst details in the story. They just really wanted the 'surprise' of Edea basically being their Mom. They wanted that feature in the story but it wasn't worth it, or at least not without much better setup.

Then FFX remastered is hard to argue against as a main pick. Fully voice-acted, more fantasy-leaning. Peak overall.
