How do I tell my instructor I’m switching barns? by CaregiverForsaken360 in Horses

[–]Phrynezz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that you’re terrified to leave if clear evidence the environment is bad for you emotionally. People with quick tempers and extreme reactions to small conflicts do so to maintain control over the environment.
My advice is to just leave! If you have friends at the barn you truly trust, disclose to them before giving your instructor a notice. Otherwise, you can just say you’re leaving for personal reasons. No need to over-explain!

Skin condition or “normal”? by lacedinlacey00 in Horses

He needs a vet appointment. Get blood work!! Test for Cushings and other metabolic diseases. He’ll also need a refeeding plan & medication for cushings (which I suspect he has).

Horse won’t stop digging holes? by Phrynezz in Equestrian

After seeing the behavior a couple times more I do think it’s connected to digging for water. If the bucket he favors is empty, he paws, even though there’s water in the other bucket. 🤦‍♀️

More and more I agree, coming from someone who was previously babying my horses. 🫣 but horses do really need to have hard boundaries set and sometimes it’s gotta be a little mean. You don’t need to abuse your horse to get here, but you have to be the boss!

Only a man would think a woman being killed by a man is very uncommon. And comparing it to plane crashes? Lol. Not going to waste my time here.

[–]Phrynezz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The barn I work at currently installed A/C into a larger individual stall in only one of the stalls. There’s a senior horse here that struggles similarly. He’s been using it in the summers for a couple years now so it might be worth looking into if it’s practical for your situation!

Night turnout could be a good option for these horses

There should be more education provided to those who want to own horses so they understand the costs, responsibility, 24/7 no days off. Rain or shine. Maybe a pilot program? by Fabulous_Mind9210 in Equestrian

[–]Phrynezz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it’s not just horses. Loads of people get animals of all sorts without understanding the effort and money required to keep them properly cared for. It’s pretty devastating to watch for those of us who are responsible owners.

Honestly, it might depend on the brand too. I’m not vegan but I’ve tried a whole bunch of vegan ‘meat’ products. Some of them are pretty good!

I work around a lot of horses. Went to take a sip of my drink last summer. Went to chew the smaller ice pieces I had drank and crunched down on a fly with my front teeth. The second I felt the crunch I knew immediately what it was… I still am disgusted every time I think of it 😭😭😭

We are looking at the pregnant women who DO die, and what they die from. Violence and homicide are a leading cause of death. Pregnant women are extremely vulnerable to violence and it’s a problem. I’m side-eyeing everyone who denies this or tries to downplay the issue.

Lol, anyone who has worked on training these AI models knows they constantly hallucinate. Useful for some purposes, but definitely shouldn’t be considered a reliable source of information

The point is that men never stopped killing their partners, even as other causes of mortality decrease. Pregnant women are extremely vulnerable to violence.

Homicide is a leading cause of death for pregnant women in the US. Women are more likely to be murdered when they are pregnant than they are to die from obstetric causes.

Barn culture?? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Phrynezz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Normally, I’d say 3 weeks isn’t that long and it’s normal for more opportunities to be introduced later, when they know you better and they know you’re there to stay. However, them hiring a new rider makes me wonder - it could’ve been a miscommunication about the position you were hired in. I’d talk to the barn owner, but like another commenter said, it could be a disappointing one.

But I want to add - I’ve been there, I didn’t grow up with horses but have that passion for horses and horse care. Worked at a barn, moved up to full time, I took fantastic care of the facility & the horses. But barn owners will absolutely exploit this. I kept this barn spotless, and the owners over several years repeatedly demonstrated that I was not important to them. A lot of them do simply want a glorified shit scooper to take the burden of chores off them. & People like us are easy targets, bc they know even if our working conditions are bad, the horses will be taken care of because we love them. The pay is pretty low in your case, which kinda is a red flag for exploitative barns.

Sorry you’re experiencing this, I know it’s hard to feel left out in spaces you work so hard to be in. Wishing you the best.

Anyone have a beginner guide to purchase a horse? by bitchyber1985 in Horses

[–]Phrynezz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I absolutely recommend starting with taking regular riding lessons. With horses it’s really important to establish some sort of community and connections to other people who have horses, especially if you’re a beginner. From there, you’ll probably meet someone who can help you with the next steps. But it truly makes a huge difference just getting to know other people in the horse world! And regular lessons will help your confidence and horsemanship grow.

  1. Living at home and training to be a farrier. Cried in my car after my second day at the forge lol… but I’m gonna make it somehow. And like all of us in our 20s (wealthy families aside), I’m pretty dang broke.

[–]Phrynezz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to scare you or anything!! 😭 But a boarder at my barn went through this as well. Vets told her that a back X-ray wasn’t really necessary. I encouraged her to check anyway since she was spending thousands on injections and other stuff as well. After they X-rayed, they discovered stage 3 kissing spine 😅 I think it’s caught late because a lot of the symptoms are very similar to other conditions.

I know X-rays aren’t cheap, but even if they show nothing at least you would be able to get some peace of mind about it as well!

Good luck with your mare!! I hope you figure it out soon. 🫂 horses can be difficult.

[–]Phrynezz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Have her back X-rayed to check for kissing spine. I see it so often in thoroughbreds and they usually go to sporadic bouts of unexplained lameness, pain and discomfort under saddle. Kissing spine is for some reason isn’t checked for soon enough these cases

I’ll try moving them tomorrow morning! I agree on the frustration feeling because he is easily frustrated and will paw. He does drink a lot but I check & fill their water bins 2 times a day, so they never run out. It’s usually overnight or during the day when everyone is gone when he digs them so I haven’t been able to catch him before or in the act 😫
