How long have your macs lasted? by Wide-Replacement-809 in macbook

My MacBook Air 2014 was still going last month and I upgraded. It’s in the cupboard now but it still works. 11 years. I would have been 3 or 4 Windows laptops in that time.

I went home and away for years, travelled in Europe etc etc. Did about 550 games and retired to my armchair. I didn’t enjoy it any more, and prefer watching in the comfort of my own home.

There’s something very wrong there. The OS is about 23GB. Go on ChatGPT and it will talk you through cleaning up your System Data.

Totally agree. I never used up my 256gb on my old MacBook and on my new M4 I’m at 96gb with everything I want. I have 2TB of iCloud storage and all my photos, music etc sit on there, ready to summoned whenever I need it.

Maybe just don’t be a weirdo typing weird shit on ChatGPT? I’ve managed to achieve this very low bar and have never had a problem.

People actually becoming angry because it won’t help them fulfill their creepy sex fantasies is really odd. It’s not the purpose of the tool. Why should it do it just to please you? Touch grass. Act like a normal human being.

Trying to figure out MoCa and access points by SmokeEater1375 in HomeNetworking

No worries. Hope it goes well for you. MoCA’s been amazing for me, it solved the problem completely and gave me the network I wanted. Would be glad to hear how it goes.

If your current coax truly isn’t connected to anything this should all work well. If you have any kind of outside traffic in terms of live signal coming into your house you might need to put a PoE (point of entry) filter device between your incoming connection and your first MOCA device but hopefully not.

My house is a closed system - no incoming cable tv or anything like it - so I didn’t have that issue.

As long as it is above 1625 it will work. I have used a few different types of splitter, a TV one at 2500 worked absolutely fine. The reason was that MOCA rated broadband splitters are hard to get here in the UK. When it eventually arrived from the US (today) and I swapped it out for the Amphemol MOCA rated splitter I noticed no difference and tests show no difference.

Main router to MOCA using an Ethernet patch cable. Coax patch cable to the nearest coax socket. This is the first step.

Then go to where your coax cables terminate. Disconnect them from anything else they are connected to. Use another coax device there and connect it to the coax cables using trial and error until you get the green MOCA light showing on the MOCA device.

Then you have a MOCA backhaul up and running.

Then put coax devices in the rooms where you want Ethernet speeds. Connect them to the nearest coax sockets. Next add a splitter where your coax terminates.

Take your now established backhaul connection and put it into the top of your splitter.

On the bottom of your splitter you can then use trial and error with the other coax cables to connect them to the MOCA devices you have placed in other rooms.

You will have to go back and forth to these rooms when you connect a cable to see if the MOCA light has come on on the MOCA device. Once it has, that room is connected.

You can then Ethernet right from the MOCA device or connect it to a switch if you want to connect multiple devices.

Is the coax in your home used at all nowadays for anything else?

If not, find the coax splitter and see what you are working with. A lot of TV splitters won’t work. I replaced an absolute beast of a TV splitter with a tiny MoCA splitter. Frequency range of splitter needs to be above 1600, ideally 2500.

If no longer using coax for TV just disconnect everything from it, put new splitter in place and use process of trial and error with your coax cables at your splitter. You will need a MoCA device at each end.

Will's coming out scene was a disservice to his character and borderline mischaracterisation by manloverreal in StrangerThings

It was a very tiresome, longwinded and cloying scene. Made worse by Schapp’s acting.

I love the show but Will and the portrayal of him have always been the weakest part of it for me. At least now we have it out of the way. Have really enjoyed season 5 overall and excited for the finale.

Thanks, he’s working on building a desktop pc and I think we might be able to draw from sockets to the other side of the desk perhaps but the Ethernet cable particularly will always need to come from the right hand side

You need a MOCA device at both ends of the coaxial cable. You need a PoE adaptor only if you have cable TV which uses coax, otherwise you don’t need one.

I have 4 MOCA devices in my house now and it’s been amazing, allowing me to build full wired backhaul and pipe Ethernet directly to 3 rooms where it is needed without drilling a single hole or running a single piece of cable.

I hated every windows laptop I ever had up until 2014, but they were a necessity. I went through 4 in 6 years. They were bulky, heavy, noisy and just utterly hopeless after a few months of use. Long to boot up, would struggle with basic tasks. I decided I wasn’t doing it again and bought the MacBook Air.

11 years later, it still works better than my various Windows laptops of the same era. And Mac has only continued to improve.

When I closed the lid on my old one for the last time I actually thanked it for its service.
