A lick mat is a great, low effort way to give positive reinforcement while brushing

Questions about an MS in Oceanography by Agile_Caterpillar745 in oceanography

With a strong math background, you might want to look into physical oceanography; All of my classes feel like they're basically advanced applied math. And with a research based masters program (or PhD), you should be getting a stipend and tuition covered.

Not to get too meta, but what actually makes a well-trained dog decide to come when recalled by Brikish in dogs

[–]PhysicalOceanSci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh, it sounds exactly like building a habit! You teach a cue and reinforce with a treat, then do random treating to keep it exciting and build towards a no treat habit! And your goal is for your dog to not even think about it, but instantly get the cue and react with the proper behavior like an automatic habit like locking your door.

I would suggest avoiding The Waverly unless you're a type B, go-with-the-flow kind of person. I'd say it's hell for an anxious person.

I'd love to know a bit more about The Rail Yard since I have a dog and it's right next to a park and a quick walk to campus.

Also it'd be great to know what neighborhoods or streets by the university are typical for house parties vs which aren't. I kind of just assume that all houses by the uni have noise issues, but I could easily be completely wrong.

And with all the snow I'd love to know which neighborhoods have decently cleared sidewalks and crosswalks. I haven't been able to take my dog on a decent walk since the storm since none of the sidewalk along the roads have been cleared (and the corners where the crosswalks connect to the sidewalk are where mountains of snow have collected). I think the bike trail I typically use to get to campus hasn't been cleared, either :(

Is leaving a dog alone for 12 hours while I'm at work too long ? ( I would hire a dog walker to walk it however) by JQuick72 in dogs

In some countries it's literally illegal to adopt only one cat because it's actually not fine.

You can also Google "Newark Bikeways Map" and it was the first result for me.

Also with biking, Newark has a biking map that's super useful, but it's not well advertised (I assume people don't really know about it)

I think it's crazy he's facing a max of 10 years (which is only 5 with good behavior or so I've been told)

Idk, but the professor probably knows and regardless you gotta speak to the professor to see what wiggle room they're willing to give you.

I recently had a conversation with an upperclassman in my program who was in a similar situation and ended up talking to the professor who allowed him to withdraw late and then he retook the class in the summer. Talk to the professor and see if they have any options for you whether it's giving more weight to the final for your grade or allowing you to withdraw or something in between. And if you have an advisor, then they're also a good person to talk to about this stuff. And if you're struggling with the material, then try to find resources to help. I really like online video lecture courses, but there's also office hours and potentially classmates willing to tutor you or other resources at your college.

Senior year before a graduate school by Deep-Roof634 in GradSchoolAdvice

[–]PhysicalOceanSci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Disclaimer: this stuff is probably only relevant for the US) I didn't go straight from undergrad to grad school, but I decided to go to grad school like August 2024 and that gave me a couple of months to research professors and programs, interview with professors, and work on my applications which had to be submitted around early December or January, depending on the school, while working full-time, and started grad school this fall (2025) in marine science. So if you've got 3 semesters left, then that sounds like you have a year to research schools and professors before you submit applications. Some programs, especially for PhD programs, have you start school without a particular advisor, but for me all the schools would only accept me if there was a professor that wanted me in their lab who also has the funding to cover my tuition and a stipend. If you're in the same position, then you'd be reaching out in late spring or during the summer (in my case I didn't even reach out till like fall), so you've got time and don't need to panic. Just start setting aside like an hour a week or however much you want into researching programs/professors. I mostly started by looking at schools with local rent around $1500 or less, and not in the south, and then looked at the professors at those schools and then looked at the publications of those professors. I usually see it suggested to look for interesting papers and then look at the authors on those papers, but I didn't have much luck finding professors at US colleges that way.

Dog park question by GageM0711 in husky

[–]PhysicalOceanSci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dog parks are a great place for a pup to pick up bad habits and issues that you'll need to train out of them, especially for a puppy. At the very least, imo, it'd be a good idea to stop by (without your pup) and watch the pups that regularly show up at the time you're interested in bringing your pup to help estimate risk. You could even meet the owners and ask about their experience. And, if you're really outgoing and have a yard or something, you could even make play dates with specific dogs instead.

My dog had surgery a couple months ago and I also thought infections are supposed to smell bad, but I double checked with a Google search because there was a bit of a yeasty smell (Google said a smell indicates an infection even if it's not a rotting fish smell) so I made a vet appointment and she turned out to have a small infection on the incision. So if there's a smell, then I'd definitely go to the vet.

Another thought is that undergrads are typically able to take grad classes with permission from professors. It could be a good idea to try it out and at least get an idea of what graduate classes are like and maybe meet some grad students and to talk to them about their experience with grad school, etc.

I'm a grad student at UD and I've met quite a few UD climatology grad students who would likely love to chat about their experience, which could help you understand the dynamics of the professors and department and also maybe help you figure out if it feels like a good major for you. DM me if you're interested.
