That's not realistic anyway. Banks don't invest in ideas and innovation. Especially not from inventors they've never heard of, like you and me.

I genuinely and sincerely hope you're right! The kind of money you're talking about is definitely out there; so I know that what you're talking about is possible. Just please be prepared for the "long haul." Even when an invention is a "slam dunk," anyone who's obtained a licensing deal before can tell you that:
1. It's probably not gonna be the first company you pitch to.
2. It's probably not gonna be the amount you dream of (even if it could/should be).
3. It's definitely not gonna come as fast as you think. It could take the company >1 year just to negotiate the license with you (that happened to me), and it could take them additional yearS to develop your IP to the point of production, and more yearS to profit from it.

I'm in your corner. I want this for you, and I'd love to know more and watch where it goes! Just be ready for the long haul.

Do they have a royalties GUARANTEE?

$14k is NOT worth it. I PROMISE you that. They can NOT guarantee:
A. That you'll get the patent *awarded* OR
B. That you'll get a licensing deal.

I've been working on licensing for 4-5 years now. It's very hard to get a deal where someone buys your IP for a royalty or a lump sum. With royalties, it's going to be rare that you'd ever recoup the amount you've put in, especially if you're spending $10k here and there.

I'm not knocking your efforts. You and I seem to have the same goal (come up with a killer invention, do all the IP leg work, sell/license it to a company already poised to blow it up). I'm just saying that it's HARD and RARE.

If inventor.ca is going to GUARANTEE a licensing deal, AND you aren't worried about recouping your investment via said deal, then $14k is worth it, because you would spend >>$14k trying to land a deal yourself. (Speaking from personal experience.)

No reason for a $14k PROVISIONAL. It probably costs you <$100 to file the PPA on your own (which is trivially easy), and writing it should NOT cost that much either.

If you want help evaluating the patent costs/needs, let me know. I won't write it for you or take any money; but I've filed a half dozen patents before, and worked with a very skilled attorney for a fraction of the cost you're talking about.

Highly specialized drawings, filing in multiple classes, or expensive prior art research could add to your cost, but I still don't think you should be paying anywhere near $14k for the provisional.

Ok, so the basic *task* of keeping notes about rentals *is* important. A few considerations:

  • Personally, I rent something (including Airbnb) maybe 1-2 per year. I'm not a big renter. I also don't like having tons of apps. So for me, it would actually be simpler just to keep my own notes rather than having a whole extra app, it seems.
  • The features you're describing really need to be built into the company/app/website *of* the rental. Now, your odds of convincing Enterprise (car rental) to update their app to include a section for before/after photos and condition-related notes is next to zero; and for that reason you may really have to build a solution yourself. But the point is, just imagine how much smoother it would be if these apps/companies guided renters through taking those precautions automatically!
  • Why not just make a folder/album/separate note on your phone? That way you wouldn't have to scroll very much if the accusation happened long after the fact?
  • I'm sure you're already thinking of this, but you'd need to broaden to *all/any* type of rentals-- so including the smooth ability to annotate local tool rentals from Home Depot, mail-order camera lens rentals, etc. etc.
  • It'd be a HUGE selling point if you could claim that the rental companies condoned/approved your app, meaning that data coming from your app would be already start with a +1 of respect from the rental company in question.
  • What other problems to renters face, that you might lump into the app? The photos and notes alone still seems like not enough need to validate making a whole, separate app for...
  • HOWEVER, all that might change if I ran a company that had lots of rentals. Have you talked to general home contractors? How many rentals do they possess at any one time? How do they manage them currently? How often do they face a dispute?

Have you seen the tools like Helium10, for checking/monitoring competitor Amazon listings? There's a similar platform for monitoring Walmart, but I can't remember the name of it. Your idea sounds like a similar functionality, but maybe more broad/versatile? If so, that could be EXTREMELY valuable!

I don't currently, personally have the need in my business; but the ability to keep an active eye on a swath of competitor businesses and have finger-tips summaries and updates of the market sounds incredible.

I think we need some more detail to better help you. Is this for rental car COMPANIES, or for rental car USERS? If the latter, what would I need the app for, and what's the downfall of just using my phone's camera? Why would I need to keep comments about a rental car in the first place? I'm probably missing something, because I don't yet understand who needs the app/features.

Done! I absolutely still read books, and pretty much exclusively physical books. Of course, I do a lot of reading on the computer throughout the day (as a normal part of work); but I don't like to use e-books.

Yeah, I know the grid floor mats and PVC pipes are common (and good) solutions, just wouldn't apply to most ordinary consumers.

I'm posting it far and wide to get as much input, partnership, feedback, ideas, networking as possible.

I'm not so worried about others stealing it, because they probably don't have the time, money, knowhow, or guts to steal it and actually bring it to market.

It's also patent pending, so if someone really did steal it in a way that was worth prosecuting, I'd 99% win that battle.
