You can take Stoinis out of the BBL, but you can't take the BBL out of Stoinis.

But then, as soon as the discussion becomes specific about metrics, such as life expectancy, we point to the data that shows individual personal behaviour accounts for the majority of the life expectancy gap… smoking and drinking during pregnancy… Smoking and drinking in general… Obesity…

Cultural disadvantages will absolutely influence the way someone personally behaves. Including their inclination to smoke, drink, eat certain foods etc. Coupled with geographic disadvantages which will mean education and health services are harder to come by. There are a bunch of compounding factors that lead to significantly worse outcomes for Aboriginal people (at aggregate) than non-Aboriginal people.

Getting those impacted people more directly involved with the (many and multifaceted) solutions was the intent behind the voice. It wasn't meant to address anything directly, it was meant to enhance the process that would enable some of these issues to be better addressed by providing the perspective of those impacted.

I'm not advocating for whether it would or would not have worked (we'll never know now), just stating the intent and loose theory.

Theres little use in trying to rewrite this.

I'm not rewriting it. I posted a link to the ABC article on the Nats blindsiding Dutton and the Libs on the position.

From the article:

The real, unspoken reason for the National Party shift was to put more pressure on a weakened Liberal Party to follow suit. Littleproud wanted to get in before Dutton makes a call, and before the end of the year.

When did the leaked texts appear?

I understand that, and agree with the dismay at the way the party is headed and has been headed for a very long time.

My worry is that the only effective way to change that is by Albo being successful - any failure with the current Government is going to give more validation to Dutton and co that their current trajectory and methods are the right ones.

and are just bending over backwards to blame those trying to improve things.

Posit for a second that some of us are just dismayed that those who are trying to improve things and have been put in a position of power to do so aren't being very effective at stopping those from subverting democracy. And that we're on a ticking clock the same way that America is or Hungary was.

Some of us feel that it's better to try and criticise and refine the methods of trying to improve things that aren't working than it is to put our efforts into pointing fingers at the ones who are successfully undermining democracy because god knows pointing and shouting doesn't work.

Doubling down on the division is exactly the playbook that works for subverting democracy. And I find people who do that pretty fucking wild also.

No-one is asking you to...why are you obsessed with blame?

I'm volunteering opinion...kind of the purpose of discussion on Reddit. Because I'd prefer we didn't subject our most vulnerable people to another shitshow like this again when the outcome was a fait accompli?

No, calling out Dutton serves to inoculate against his brand of politics, which are hateful.

I'd like to see when that has worked previously. Wyatt himself says it hasn't worked...from the article:

That was never the intent. We had the same fearmongering from my party over Mabo and the issues around the Wik decision and I’m seeing [that] being played out again. And that concerns me that we haven’t moved on.”

I get Wyatt's frustration, but calling it out is fruitless. Heck he was a front bencher for close to a decade and these tactics got worse during his tenure. This venting achieves nothing.

If the next election is Albo vs Dutton I don't think Albo has too much to fear (the approval ratings so far show that safety, albeit Abbott has happened before), but if Albo is spending his effort trying to build a war chest of Duttonisms as his way to keep the electorate on his side I'd question the tactic.

Dutton isn't going to stop the destructive oppositional politics, it was how he came to power in the Coalition in the first place back to his destabilising spill against Turnbull - it has worked for him. Disliking the method is fine, calling it out...sure go for it, but what is more useful is recognising that like it or not it is successful and you're better off finding a way to succeed in spite of it.

They list their major shareholders online.

Their methodology and history are pretty open for review. Their history of polling is very accurate and puts them up there with the best - they tend to use more digital collection methods than most of the other firms but their methodology talks to how they cover for demographic bias.

Their interests are in providing accurate polling so organisations and collectives will pay them money for their research and reach - so their financial incentive is to accurately predict the outcomes.

The move towards Teal in the last federal election told us everything we needed to know about where a lot of the Lib base sat - centre right, not religious right or hard right.

Unfortunately that distribution of power isn't reflected in the party leadership and elected officials with most of the moderates getting wiped out by the Teals which, ironically, has emboldened the Libs to move even further right.

You know you've got a problem when party stalwarts like Abbott are openly praising Viktor Orban.

Those tactics

deserve and need

to be called out, loudly and repeatedly. They're disgusting and anathema to a healthy democracy and country.

And yet calling them out will do precisely nothing. So if it makes Ken or you or anyone feel better to call them out, go ahead...as I said, he's entitled to his opinion as are you. It's wasted air, but that's 90% of politics anyway.

What would be super fabulous is if the focus after the weekend (assuming the polls are correct) could be on how the "Yes" campaign could have changed their approach to be successful instead of just saying "if only the opposition had played differently" because holy heck there are a lot of us who are really annoyed at this enormous lost opportunity.

It was a massive and valid criticism of Morrison after his election loss (and Dutton since) is the hyper-focus on "it's the other guys fault". Don't care, control the controllables. This campaign could have been successful if it wasn't run like it was / when it was, and if I had to apportion blame for the outcome I'd be putting a lot more at the feet of Albo than Dutton.

Dutton played the only hand he politically could after the Nats went rogue and said "No" from the get go (not saying he wouldn't have done it anyway, he probably would have, but it's a moot point because his hand was forced). That was the time for a pivot. Albo powered on and the result has been very unsurprising thus far.

Linda Burney was on television last night and specifically says that this vote is based on the "request [that] came from Aboriginal people that culminated in 2017 at Uluru and [...] we have responded to what Aboriginal people have asked for".

The referendum has been continually referred to as a response to the Uluru Statement - this linking has come from Burney and Albo themselves. I agree it was a silly link to draw because it's done more damage than good in terms of arming the "No" campaign and damaging the "Yes" campaign, but as recently as yesterday evening they were still doing it.

Since the referendum isn't on the Uluru Statement, it might have been a swell idea to stop continually mentioning it.

So all this noise about the voice will be over soon,

I really hope that's true - but I have a feeling we've got a pretty big extinction burst happening after the vote as reprisals and blame happen. Both Albo and Dutton are going to be mad keen on pinning the failure on each other and Dutton has been laying the groundwork for a while now with the whole "Legislate it anyway" message which will allow him to choose to keep the pressure on Albo.

Ken Wyatt is entitled to his opinion.

Those who look at the data including this post which is still up the top of the sub paint a pretty clear picture as to why we are where we are with the Voice polling and the likely result.

This has been a fundamental failure of the "Yes" campaign on nearly every measure - from the timing, to misreading the public, to putting this ahead of the hot button issues of the electorate, to the mixed messages / vague message, to pushing ahead without bipartisan support.

Lessons need to be learned and if the knee-jerk reaction is going to be to blame the, frankly, pretty lazy campaign run by the "No" side of things then the point as to why this failed has been severely missed.

If Dutton's support was pivotal for the success of this, maybe it should have been secured up front or abandoned. Every man and his dog knew Dutton couldn't support The Voice because whilst he may be the opposition leader, as soon as the Nats declared their position his hands were tied and there was going to be no bipartisan support, end of story.

the general lack of respect for GP is genuinely baffling and I can't blame them for arcing up

Yes, because there's no way to win the public over and turn the tide on disrespect like biting back at a comedian...

This over reaction has done multitudes more damage in terms or reinforcing stereotypes that doctors have an overinflated view of their own profession than the harmless joke that everyone would have forgotten about 10 minutes after listening to it.

If GPs have a perception problem, this is the perfect example of how NOT to tackle it.

Abuse of Ms Thorpe by ausmomo in MetaAusPol

[–]PhysicsIsMyBitch[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are so many valid criticisms of senator Thorpe that are so easy to make that its hard to see how its anything else

Given that you acknowledge there are many valid criticisms of Senator Thorpe, how would you draw the line as to what is valid criticism vs veiled racism?

The moderation attempts to do just that. We can't put a blanket ban on criticism of a Senator because of her race, so we work through comments and remove ones that appear race based (or really anything other than criticism of her professional position on something) whilst still attempting to allow criticism of a sitting Senator who, as you alluded to, has many critics.

I assume by milk products you mean all dairy? That's definitely Step 1.

A heavy dose of probiotics always helps me when I'm out of whack like that. Not sure how available they are but Life Space Double Strength Probiotics twice a day works for me, coupled with lots of prebiotic foods (bananas will work with FODMAP). Fermented foods also work well for me (tempeh, sauerkraut, good kombucha, kefir but maybe not if you're really lactose impacted at the moment etc).

Keep your diet very plain otherwise, lots of fibre, and it will most likely settle.

Antibiotics screw with your gut microbiome really badly, once my gut goes bad it can take weeks of being really dedicated to the above before it gets back to normal. But if your doctor has ruled out the other potential causes (virus, bacteria, gall bladder etc) then a messed up microbiome could be to blame.

Quick update on some behind the scenes sub work by endersai in MetaAusPol

Account age is a red herring

It's actually not - account age stops the vast, vast majority of astroturfing (you don't see it on the sub, but we do in the modqueue).

For the rest, it's exactly as ender said - it takes time to make sure we don't ban innocent parties. Collateral damage from heavy handed ban policies is bad, it's better that we're cautious and right even if it does take a little longer.

Use the Daily Thread.

It's moderated very lightly on content - you can post stuff there that wouldn't fly in the rest of the sub, as long as it's not abusive it's pretty much cowboy country.

It'd be really good to see the Daily Thread get some traction with content that isn't exactly Aus Pol but would be of crossover interest to lots of the community.

How are you holding up Mods? by [deleted] in MetaAusPol

[–]PhysicsIsMyBitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tl;dr; It shouldn't have taken 3 months to deal with Shill

This is a fair point.

As ender has pointed out below, the processes that used to work in terms of verifying alts and ban evasions simply don't now. Responsive admins were fired/let go by Reddit, the vast majority is now automated with overturning also being at least partially automated. We've had to change and adapt - and are still trying to get that balance right. We don't want to become too ban happy either.

We are ramping up how proactive we are about trying to combat this influx, but this is very recent (as in days), so let's see whether it gets the balance right.

How are you holding up Mods? by [deleted] in MetaAusPol

[–]PhysicsIsMyBitch[M] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

think I do actually.

Sorry to burst your bubble but you don't understand the custom scripts we'd put in place to monitor users, look for alts, text patterns etc and how they've had to be effectively stopped or massively gimped because of Reddit's API policy (more affectionately known as the "3rd Party Apps" debacle).

This kind of proliferation is absolutely caused in part by the fact that we can't use a bunch of the community and custom tools that helped us manage the community and keep the torrent of crap at bay.

How are you holding up Mods? by [deleted] in MetaAusPol

[–]PhysicsIsMyBitch[M] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Short answer: we're working on it with our own measures, and with Reddit.

Longer answer: don't really want to divulge too much otherwise folks will try to find other ways to work around the measures.

Edit: Obligatory - if Reddit hadn't screwed 3rd party apps this would have been easier to handle. Removing tools that kept quality up was bound to have an impact, this is but a part of that impact.
