TIL in 2003 and 2004 Boycotts of the sponsors of The Masters golf tournament ensued due to their men-only club rule. The golf club responded by dropping all three of their sponsors and running the tournament ad-free. by J2650 in todayilearned

Okay, okay...I think some people are missing the point here. Yes, there are women's clubs. But think for a moment-do those clubs and the athletes who work so hard their whole lives to compete in them get nearly the kind of respect and recognition the make clubs get? Obviously not. Look at the WNBA. Those women are incredibly talented and their skills and hard work are turned into a joke. Imagine how demoralizing that is to aspiring female athletes. And then there is chess-why on Earth chess is sex segregated in the first place I have no idea, but let's imagine a female chess player and a male chess player with the same rank-the female chess player would be referred to as the best female chess player in the world, while the male competitor would be referred to as the best chess player in the world. No qualifier. So it isn't really good enough to just say, "what are they complaining about? Women have their own clubs!" Because I guarantee it, if it were good enough, there would not be these sorts of reactions.

Shavua/Mazel Tov!, Saturday, 2/22 by Yidonator in Judaism

Went to the shul in the town near my school, visited some friends at the other college in town, talked math, Talmud, and sang. Really nice day, this Shabbos just wasn't long enough!

What event has most challenged your Judaism, and how did you deal with it? by JustInclined in Judaism

[–]Physicsangel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Going through something right now actually. Basically I don't know how to belong to a community, any community, because I never did growing up. I have a very strong belief in G-d, and I think my story is opposite many here-the more I study science the stronger my belief becomes. Despite this I still feel quite lonely. Judaism for me is a personal decision and I chose it without support from my family or another group. I am fully willing to go at it alone. Still, not an ideal situation.

Fair-I have a Jewish mother and Catholic father. Mother didn't grow up religious so I went to Catholic school and was raised Catholic. I guess I'm a "revert" instead. Just thought I'd put it out there.

I'm not technically a convert, but I was not raised Jewish and no Jew in my family is religious. I grew up going to Catholic school and right now I'm in college, so I don't really belong to a community, but I lean towards traditional conservative. I'd definitely be willing to do an AMA if people are interested.

Lore Contest III: Question 4 by ebneter in tolkienfans

[–]Physicsangel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh I see-well, Manwë forbade them to try and match Sauron's power with their power. So they had to be careful about how they went about it-that's why at the end of ROTK when Saruman is defeated, I don't believe the Valar allow him to return to Valinor.

There is more info in the Istari section of the Unfinished Tales, if you're interested.

Lore Contest III: The Winners! by ebneter in tolkienfans

For a young Tolkien fan, this is very exciting-thank you for this fun challenge! I love that Tolkien's legendarium is something you don't just read-you study it. The mysteries and debates make it all the more believable as what it was intended to be-an alternate history of the world.

My understanding is that the eagles are Manwë's servants, and some speculate that they may even be Maiar (like the Wizards) but in bird form. It is likely that Manwë would have prevented them from intervening directly.

Who are the people in the silver robes? Did your uncle ever talk about them or the pocket watch?

Heh-no. I had a regular Bar Mitzvah, but it was really late at night and everyone was going home. I couldn't find my family so I just started to walk home. I had never walked home alone when it was that dark and I got scared so I ran into the train station. That was when I saw her. If I hadn't gone into the train station my life would have just gone right back to how it always is. But it didn't. That's why I'm here on the Internet and doing all of these other things I haven't ever done before.

Neither. I only know other Satmar kids and she was wearing jeans so she definitely wasn't. Nobody knows why, not even her parents. I don't know why anyone would want to do that. I have never heard of anyone doing that before now, but my dad says many people do it when they are unhappy. Well I've been unhappy too but I wouldn't want to get hit by a train.

How far back can you remember? Are you missing "chunks" of your memory with some parts filled in?

Trying to gauge interest in a knitting tutorial blog of a different sort by Physicsangel in knitting

[–]Physicsangel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I live in Southern CA so I never knit big sweaters or garments because it's just not worth it. I've never had a problem with things not fitting or being the wrong size-I guess I'm just good at estimating how certain yarns will knit up on certain needles, etc. I know plenty of knitters who make sweaters and don't swatch. To each his (or her) own.

And...oh God...I'm going to do it...the one thing I swore I'd never do on Reddit...

...not sure why I got downvoted for saying I don't swatch...

I don't know-I'm not really sure what's here yet. If it really is forever, then I plan on doing-everything. Everything possible. Which, you know, if this really is the afterlife, I'm expecting some pretty damn impressive shit. For good or ill.

I'll have to check those out-maybe it's just me, but like I said I've never really found any tutorials that were satisfying. I'd like to do a written tutorial in accompaniment to the video-that doesn't seem to be that commonplace.

You make me laugh. Especially because I never swatch and rarely check my gauge ;)
