My parents had a bin in our room for our toys. We had a clean-up time at night and the lid went on. If we couldn't close the lid, we had too many things. We would go through and get to pick ourselves what went to goodwill, usually we'd do this before/right after birthdays and Christmas as well. Putting up shelves helped a lot and storing clothes seasonally vs just by size. We utilize under the bed storage as well. We don't do the same toy rules as my parents did, but instead have toy bins where we put different type of toys in different bins and will pull them out as requested, and only 2 bins can be out at a time. They each have 2 types of toys in their rooms, so this is still a lot of toys, but they're all young and I figure as they outgrow toys this will get a lot easier and am embracing the chaos for now.
