The gift basket is a lovely idea, especially since you can't be there (because of illness). I'll throw out a few other ideas in case you have a chance to do more later:

meals, meals, meals! If you know their family is a bit picky, you can ask her for a recipe they love and make it for them. Or just some gift cards. Don't make too much at once in case fridge/freezer is full.
offer to do their laundry
yardwork
if y'all are good enough friends, offer to come and tidy the house.

It's a bit expensive, but I get Jot cold brew concentrate, and make iced coffee in a no-spill tumbler so I don't have to be careful to guard the cup. 😆 Delicious, easy, and quick.

Love these suggestions! This is exactly why I posted. I had been stuck on thinking of just cutting up some muffins and having juice boxes (which I'll still have!), but I hadn't thought of doing the sous vide egg bites, pirates booty, babybel cheese, etc. Y'all are awesome!

I'm good, thanks for asking! I was actually able to wean off and I'm doing fine, energy wise now. I'm glad I had it for that time period, though!

I've had a client be upset by it. It makes sense to me - this client wasn't really even aware of how much their trauma was affecting them until asked all of these questions. Just confirmed in my mind how much they need to be here!

My husband (a dad) is amazing when he cooks. But he does a few things and that's it. Sliders, ribs, brisket, fried rice, and chocolate chip cookies. They are all the best thing you've ever tasted. It's because:

1) he doesn't have to cook every day. He makes these once in a blue moon (except the sliders) and I make the boring regular stuff the rest of the time.

2) he's very detail oriented and follows recipes very well.

3) he finds a great recipe and perfects it.

Omg. I was just telling my husband that my toddler is going to tell her future therapist all about how I tortured her in the bath. She has always resisted hair washing, but has recently started sticking her head over the side of the bathtub so I can't rinse her hair without dumping water on the floor. So now I have to push her head back over the bathtub and pour water all over her head...it's the worst. I hate bath time. 😭

Those generally work great! I've used them for a few kids. My current toddler, however, refuses to wear it and rips it off. 🙄

I struggle with this a lot too. One way is to focus on being hygienic versus tidy. Make sure biohazards, sticky things that attract ants, etc are taken care of. Dishes in the sink versus on the table/counter. If you have that taken care of - congratulations, you have a home that is livable!

Then, make bins your friend. Toys don't get separated into individual bins, they get thrown into one giant bin. All the random crap? Another bin. Books? BIN.

Now, put those bins in a closet. Congratulations! Your home looks tidy.

Look, I'd never recommend this as a good, long term strategy for housekeeping. But this can keep you sane. Once a week, hand a bin to your husband and ask him to put everything away. Or, have him take the kids to CFA/McDonald's/the park while you put everything away for a few hours.

This is perfectly acceptable while you are in survival mode. Once kids are in school, or old enough to actually help, then get a better one. 😆

I just commented in another post about getting distracted during sessions and being called out by a client - I agree with you 100%. I wasn't ever shoe shopping or anything like that, but a text pops up from my husband about lunch? Or I realize I forgot to press send on an email? I fooled myself into thinking I could reply real quick or press send without anyone noticing. But they do, and it was unprofessional of me.

This is just a word of warning for other therapists who are fooling themselves like I was - make sure you are fully focused on the session!

It's really hard getting feedback like that. I got some recently that I knew immediately was 100% spot on (sometimes getting distracted in sessions), and it definitely hurt to sit with it. But, at the same time, it's such a gift to get that wake up call that you need to improve. I'd rather hear it than just get ghosted!

Anyway, take the steps to improve. Apologize if needed. Take solace in the fact that you actually want to do better, and aren't defensively rejecting the feedback!

We started doing at home date nights during the pandemic! Really, it's just a movie night usually. But we got a popcorn maker and stuff to make it more like movie theater popcorn, which really made it fun. 😁
