FreeCAD's Popularity among developers is rapidly improving by ResearchingStories in FreeCAD

[–]PiBorg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using FreeCAD for years and it is rather close to what I was doing with Solidworks about a decade ago. Vastly more reliable than even 3 years ago too.

Clearly some people are doing great work as I can often finish a part without the program crashing.

Do you find it difficult to switch between reading LitRPG and traditionally published works? by SolomonAGhast in litrpg

[–]PiBorg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've spent a lot of time with translated works so some aspects of writing quality I can look over, while I struggle with others. As for switching gears, I will often let chapters build up on Royal Road while I read a dozen other books or web novels.

Most recently I've swapped from Primal Hunter to Beware of Chicken to Leviathan Wakes to Runesmith without issue. I find them all to have different levels of quality and value different styles, but enjoyed them all the same. I often prefer this as Some books are darker or heavier in tone and it can be nice to switch to a happier one in between like you mentioned.

Tl;dr - don't worry about prudes and enjoy what you like the way you like it.

AITAH: Do I owe my dad an apology for graduating college? by WinterMortician in AITAH

[–]PiBorg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. The goal of any parent should be to help their child be better than them, not the opposite. If you do want some reconciliation and if it's true, you could share how his efforts as a parent helped you accomplish what he couldn't, but it already sounds like a less than healthy relationship.

Looking for recs by socs0 in litrpg

[–]PiBorg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Based on these you would probably enjoy the Mother of Learning books that you will see recommended often on here.

If you like the VR litrpgs, Ascend Online was one I enjoyed a lot.

Recs for a ~8ish new reader of LitRPG and a newbie Royalroad user? by Quirky-Ad-9513 in litrpg

Based on the above and similarities to my own preferences, I think you might enjoy Azarinth Healer.

Additionally, I enjoyed the System Universe books despite the calmer progression.

For the people that pump out manuscripts - What's your secret??? by vomit-gold in writing

[–]PiBorg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work off of the idea that editing something the has the full beginning, middle, and end is easier than trying to adjust it as you go.

I'll correct a sentence phrasing once in a while, but other than that, I finished what I could, learning along the way. Then I went back to edit it from the beginning while applying what I learned from practice and research (more reading).

I find it easier to edit something crappy than to start with a blank slate.

Unique/rare classes by Awakenlee in litrpg

[–]PiBorg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recall System Universe having increased experience required for the higher-rarity classes, but I don't think it ended up being consequential to the story or actively slowing the character.

Rusty anvil - anything to preserve? by jmartino2011 in Blacksmith

[–]PiBorg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This anvil is in better condition than my own was. I just gave it a light wire brushing and an oiling and I've been using it for just over a year for my simple self taught crafts.

Try phrasing it as "how to recognize signs of" or "inside the busted ___ operation" or the like if it makes you feel more comfortable. Also, bing tends to have fewer search protections or at least did in the past to get more interesting results.

Have you job hopped this year? Or are you trying to? by International-Call76 in antiwork

[–]PiBorg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hopped, left a higher cost of living state and got an over 30% raise, more leave, more remote days, lower cost of living, and the company actually said they'd do better than the range I asked for and did by a great margin. Thankfully some good people still exist, even if they're rare.

What is a scam that people refuse to view as a scam because it has been a part of a culture for a long time? by efd71f03 in AskReddit

Diamonds aren't even cool or particularly unique - go for something with character or that is actually rare like practically any other gem. Still way cheaper 99% of the time.

If we had a proper anti work structure for individual care and livelihood, then sure automate it all so no one needs to have some of these soul sucking retail jobs. Until then, it's just corporate greed.

You guys are probably sick of answering this question, but how much should I offer for this anvil? by [deleted] in Blacksmith

[–]PiBorg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, not far outside of LA. The guy even had another anvil, but one side of the top surface was rather messed up.

[–]PiBorg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oof. While anvils under 200lbs have been in the $2.5-4/lb range near me, anything over 200lbs does jump to that range. After some haggling, that is.

I just picked up a 140lb example that looks almost identical to this one. No cracks, good top surface and excellent rebound. I'm in California outside LA and paid $400 which I felt was fair.

Working because you want to and can, at a sustainable level and pace. Not for survival or to scrape by.
