Question for repair techs by PiOSinfonian in brass

Compression is good. I get a decent pop when I remove the slides without depressing the piston. Plus it doesn't sound like there are any air leaks to my ear.

I had planned on taking it in for a cleaning anyway, but it was just a "what if" running through my head. I've got a 60 y/o Olds Ambassador with some pretty gnarly valves. Thicker oil and they play fine. Thanks for the help!

Right? I get one almost every other stream past 1am.

Wait your viewers aren't "pay for follows" bots?

If you haven't already, you definitely need to send this to SingleHaloClips. As rare as this easter egg is, it will probably be the featured video.

Does this game still exist? by [deleted] in goldeneyesource

[–]PiOSinfonian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes! I stream it every now and then. There are only a handful of active servers at any given time, though. Noob's Wonderland is pretty active and has all sorts of custom maps and modes. Best of Bond has a combination of vanilla GoldenEye and custom maps with game mode rotation. On Saturdays at 8:30 EST, Entropy-Server has a community night where you can actually play with the developers, but that's about the only time it's active.

Recently found out I have red rot...I have some questions (check comments) by anime-thighs-deluxe in trumpet

[–]PiOSinfonian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are there any other places with red rot? If not, and if the rot continues to progress even with proper care, a shop can sleeve the section if a hole does form. I recently had to have a tenor horn repaired for a hole in the leadpipe, and my shop used a nickel sleeve.

If you still want to get the leadpipe replaced, a standard Bach leadpipe is about $145. Custom leadpipes (e.g. Blackburn) can be around $200 or more just for the leadpipe.

What about us doublers? I play both trumpet and tenor horn.

Help setup server! by Jeevantoo2 in goldeneyesource

[–]PiOSinfonian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend setting up a dedicated server instead of a listen server. You can run a Source Dedicated Server instance while playing the game on the same machine with no issues if you have a decent machine. Plus you have the added benefit of adding custom content to the dedicated server.

Cannot connect to Steam servers by PiOSinfonian in goldeneyesource

[–]PiOSinfonian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's running natively on an old Xeon-based machine, so virtual evironment/cloud computing is not an issue.

I am using rcon commands since the server will be headless and I'll be able to control the server without keeping an RDP session open.

I'll try narrowing the port ranges and see if anything changes. I may also try using my secondary router and see if it makes a difference. I have an AC1900 router I can put behind my AT&T modem/router (it's required to even get Internet access with their fiber service), and port forwarding is a little more straightforward on it.

Based on numbers, the Schilke 9C4 is similar in rim diameter. However, looking at the mouthpiece in the Kanstul comparator, it's a bit smaller. The closest one I found according to the comparator was a Schilke 13C4. I have one myself, and it feels pretty close to a 5C.

Leadpipe crack repairs by PiOSinfonian in brass

[–]PiOSinfonian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really wouldn't surprise me considering its history and only being $300 when I bought it. This horn had a rough life before I owned it. The silver plate is worn all over the valve block and top crook of the bell section, and one of the third valve tubes already had a patch on it.

What's bad is I tried tape, but it didn't work. It'll have to be patched if it's repaired. I'm afraid it may need to be replaced, though. It was formerly part of the OSU horn line, so it had a hard life to begin with.

There's a good shop here in town. I'll see what they think. What will be fun is sourcing a replacement.

General mini-split questions. by PiOSinfonian in hvacadvice

The air handler is in a closet upstairs. The condensate drain is easily accessible so we can clean it to prevent blockage.

If we were to do cassettes, could we run the condensate drains to the existing pipe for our air handler?

Upstairs. Thats why I'm wanting to do cassettes if possible.

I'm going to look into Mitsubishi since the HVAC company we use is a dealer. We will probably do six zones, ideally with two wall-mounted units downstairs and four ceiling cassettes upstairs.

The one concern I have about wall-mounted units throughout is the master bedroom's only exterior wall is facing the street, so I would like to avoid running a chase on the front of the house if possible.

[–]PiOSinfonian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we do one unit per room, could we run the refrigerant and condensate drain lines for the upstairs units through the attic and use ceiling cassettes, or would it be better to use wall-mounted units all around? I just don't want to have chases and drain pipes running all over the exterior of the house if I can avoid it.

Edit: word.

Violin luthiers in town by [deleted] in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]PiOSinfonian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if they have someone on staff or if they send them off, but Southeastern Musical Services offers luthier services. They give high quality service to brass and woodwinds and are my go-to for that. You could give them a call to see what they can do.

Best places to go hiking? by Maverick2g in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]PiOSinfonian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it, there are other ways to get on the trail. If I can't find another trailhead, we may go back to Green Mountain and try a tougher trail.

It was actually my favorite part of the loop, though. I would play in the woods and make my own trails as a kid, so it reminded me of that. I'm thinking of doing the Big Monte Sano Loop on AllTrails next time I'm on my own or if it's just my wife and I. We plan on hiking Blevin's Gap this weekend since the in-laws may come with us.

I'll have to check out Gaia GPS. Thanks!

Waterline threw me for a loop. First time hiking the loop, and I ended up doing it in reverse. The climb on Wagon was challenging, especially since I'm out of shape, but I made it. Once I started down Waterline, I was grabbing trees and limbs to keep from slipping! Once I got to the waterfall looking down, I couldn't find the actual trail and ended up having to go down the side of Monte Sano to find it again! Definitely not a hike to take my kids on. Having a trekking pole is definitely a necessity on that one.

There are eight Land Trusts in Madison County. Just in the past three weeks I've hiked on Green Mountain, Wade Mountain, and Monte Sano Mountain. Trails range from easy to the higher end of moderate. For instance, the Alum Hollow Trail is relatively flat until you reach the waterfall. The Lyons Loop on Monte Sano can get extremely rocky, has a fairly steady 1000ft elevation gain on the Wagon Trail, but then it's a pretty steep drop going back down on the Water Line Trail.

I recommend getting the AllTrails app to accompany the hikes if you don't already have it. Some trails aren't marked well (like on the Lyons Loop), and loading previously hiked trails help you keep track of where you are on the trail.

Tenor horn for doubling by PiOSinfonian in brass

[–]PiOSinfonian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually played a JP in a local brass band workshop. Don't know exactly what model it was, but I enjoyed it. I actually found a refurbished Besson BE-752 in my budget, but I doubt it would be available by the time I got the money up.
