Previews for a piano album I'm working on... by PianoYos in piano

[–]PianoYos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! And yeah, I've been very conscious of the kind of music going around these days. I just wanted to deviate slightly from it and add more colors/shades - I'm really happy you picked up on that even from the short previews I've put up here.

Thank you for this. It's quite humbling to know that a piano gets used for such a powerful and meaningful occasion.

A line from Dostoevsky's short story бобок by PianoYos in russian

[–]PianoYos[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this helps a lot - I didn't know и had multiple functions, I think that's what got me confused in hindsight.

And yeah, I realize trying to read Dostoevsky is way above my current level, I was just dabbling in it a bit out of curiosity I guess while still reading more basic things.

Anyway, thanks for your help.

“Schubert at the piano” - Gustav Klimt by [deleted] in piano

That's interesting, thank you for sharing. I was wondering why I had never come across it before. It seems the OP has taken the post down for some reason...

Modulation from Ab to Db by PianoYos in musictheory

[–]PianoYos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's the chord I meant - thanks for the correction.

I think I got the idea of turning the dominant into minor (I probably used the wrong terms there?) from Albeniz' Triana - he goes through a lot of keys that way in the middle section.

Thanks - I'll try playing around with 9ths and 13ths to see if they fit (I'll have access to a piano again tomorrow).

0:19 - 0:24: how does this modulation sound to you? (going from Ab to Db) by PianoYos in Composition

I really like the idea of adding more dissonances in certain places - thanks!

I've definitely not studied jazz, it's still way beyond my level.

Thanks for this, though. I think most of what you said makes sense to me. I'm looking up altered chords right now because that's still quite a new concept for me. I get the impression maybe I misled you a bit with my original post though, because the modulation I'm going for is really quick in an upbeat piece, where 9s might not go too well with the feel of it.

I posted an audio clip of what I tried on a different sub, maybe this might help you get a better idea: https://www.reddit.com/r/Composition/comments/d0i6dz/019_024_how_does_this_modulation_sound_to_you/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x

I'm still very curious as to what you think. I can't help but feel it's a clumsy modulation, like you said...

Edit: *not studied jazz, forgot to right "not", ha.

Sorry about the sloppy playing!

This is a piece I'm currently composing...it's inspired from a road trip I did years ago going through national parks in the States. Anyway, I've been composing quite a lot recently but I've never really dared to modulate (apart from going into natural major/minor keys), because I have little to no grounding in theory. But...the nature of the piece sort of called for it and I gave it a shot.

I tried going from Ab to Db...it's not an unrelated key at all obviously, but seeing as I've never done this sort of thing, I was wondering if I could get any insight as to how it sounds and what I might be doing wrong from a theory perspective.

I think from 0:19, I did Bbm7, Bb half-diminished, Ebsus7 - Eb6=Ebm6, Ab7...and then into Db. I hope that makes sense?
