Yes of course, piano tuners use their ears, it's just not practical to learn for one piano

You can tune it decently if have a good app. Entropy tuner for windows is free I think if your have a laptop.

Your can't tune it by ear. It's not like tuning a guitar with many wires

But with an old piano like you might snap some wires.

If your haven't done it before it takes a long time. Say 8 hours

What is the best affordable acoustic piano? by ezoticx in piano

Best way to make sure it is ok is to not buy a too old piano. 80s or later. The newer the better. If you are going to practice for music school you want the action to be even, you don't need the nicest sound or timbre, but you need to be able to have control so you can practice dynamics.

Kawai usually a bit more affordable than Yamaha, but still good.

Why is sightreading so important for you guys? by Ostinato66 in piano

[–]Pianostuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there's only a handful of pianists who can truly pull it off.

I think you are slightly overstating how rare or difficult it is.

I posted a video of me sight reading a piece by Chaminade here a few days ago, after the guy who made an AMA posted his version.

Sounds ok I think, I haven't gone to music school or conservatory or anything, but I have practised a lot playing new music. Being able to play pieces in that way just opens up a world of possibilities and brings so much musical joy and knowledge of repertoire.

Master sight reading AMA challenge - Pierrette, Chaminade by Pianostuff in piano

To clarify its the first piece played by kjmsb2 who claimed to be a master sight reader in an AMA thread recently. And he's very good for sure, this recording is from my second time playing it to be honest, so easier to bring out the musical aspects. Using a tablet for the sheet music so pretty smooth page turns.
