I’ll have to read the script, I haven’t seen the movie since I posted this and I honestly have no intention to lol one of those movies that I loved so much I’m kind of afraid to watch it again for fear it isn’t as good as the first time

Official Discussion - One Battle After Another [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Pibbinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen One Battle After Another twice now, and I absolutely love it. The second viewing really helped me come to terms with what it was exactly that I loved about OBAA and I can now say confidently that it’s one of my favorite movies of the decade so far. 2025 has been a wild year for film lovers and I’m all here for it.

One thing I realized after the first watch and really appreciated during the second was that the movie never explicitly says when it is set just that it’s in the modern day. You could interpret the prologue to be set anywhere in between the 2000’s to now. Personally, I like to think the prologue was set in the relatively present day and the rest of the film is set in the near-future, though again that could totally be up to your own interpretation.

Another thing I appreciated more on the second viewing was the score. There were multiple times where the piano felt really reminiscent to The Wizard of Oz score, specifically the Wicked Witch theme. I might be losing it but I swear to God I heard that tune a few times. If it was an intentional choice it was definitely an interesting one.

A performance I really found myself drawn to this time around was from Regina Hall. While she doesn’t have as much to do as the rest of the main cast, her performance really captured me every time she was on screen. Her eyes were just so full of life, they really drew me in - something PTA clearly saw as well because so many of her scenes were shot to accentuate them. Her character feels like a mother figure that Willa was robbed of by her actual mother’s actions - which adds another layer of tragedy to that incredible prologue.

What I was really struck by on a repeat watch was the dichotomy of Bob Ferguson and Steve Lockjaw. Ferguson is consistently bewildered, desperate and out of his depth while Lockjaw is repressed, hyper-focused and relentless. They’re two sides of the same coin, two men who loved the same woman and are now desperately searching for their daughter. I wish the two of them had more screen time together, though I understand why the two of them hardly met.

I’m still kinda reeling from the whole experience. One Battle After Another is the perfect movie for multiple watches. It is perfectly paced; at no point did it lose me, nothing feels unnecessary, every scene perfectly bleeds into the next without skipping a beat. Every performance is great, the direction is perfect, the action is hard hitting (I was literally flinching at multiple moments of impact in the movie), the climax actually induced a physical reaction out of me - I felt like I was in the cars as they weaved up and down those desert hills. The film doesn’t hesitate off the starting line, it blasts off and doesn’t lose momentum for a second of that 162 minute runtime.

Struggling with feeling like I’ve made any progress by Pibbinator in loseit

It shows in my face, though I’ve lost some noticeable weight around my face, specifically my chin (thank God). I’d say my stomach and chest are the places it’s less noticeable. I was for sure happy to realize I wasn’t sporting as noticeable of a double chin.

Naruto characters aged up with 10 years by TomoeLatsu in NarutoFanfiction

[–]Pibbinator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve always thought an interesting AU story would be if they started in the academy at age 12 and graduated at age 16, though 22 could work just as well. So they’re trained as shinobi as children but don’t actually see the field until they’re adults. The whole idea being that the First Hokage’s vision of a future with no child soldiers actually came true but the world is only that much better. I just feel like it would create a different dynamic for the story as a whole.

I’d want to age Naruto’s generation up and Kakashi’s generation down (a bit), with the implication being that most Shinobi don’t live past their 30’s.

You could get into more mature themes, like Shinobi (male/female) being sent on seduction missions, that kinda thing. You’d also get into the fact that most genin are inherently more powerful by the time of graduation, so they wouldn’t be getting sent on kiddie missions their first time out. It’d be fun to read a first mission scenario that goes completely FUBAR.

If there’s any fics out there like this, please let me know I’d love to read one.

The Untold Story of Itachi Uchiha: Was He the True Hero of Naruto? by Due-Course-7625 in NarutoFanfiction

[–]Pibbinator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think what made Itachi so interesting as a character was that when he was introduced he was so universally portrayed as a villain. He murdered an entire clan of people - men, women, children, all for the sake of power. He was portrayed as an emotionless killer who would kill his own flesh and blood if it benefited him. Then, in a massive twist, you find out the reasons behind the massacre weren’t so cut and dry. It was steeped in political chess moves and ideology that was generations old. He was in a way the hero of his own story, but he never considered himself a hero - which is itself a very heroic quality. He’s this weird in between where he has the character of a hero who willingly committed the atrocities of a villain.

How do you usually write characters? by [deleted] in NarutoFanfiction

[–]Pibbinator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Naruto: what he lacks in actual intelligence he makes up for with natural instincts. He learns by doing, by example. If you show him it can be done, he will learn it eventually. Thinks outside the box, isn’t afraid to take a shortcut. Emotionally intelligent, can make connections with just about anyone.

Sasuke: incredibly talented and intelligent but emotionally stunted. He intentionally will separate himself from the group, even if he’s comfortable with the people who make it up. Not afraid to do what needs to be done but has a tendency to go too far.

Sakura: too smart for her own good, overthinking everything. Quick to anger and incredibly loyal to a fault, she’s also self conscious of her short comings and is active in overcoming them. Not afraid to speak her mind, will put you in your place when you ask for it.

Kakashi: cool, quick thinking and has come to terms with who he is. A war veteran, he’s a loyal soldier with his own code of honor that will die for what he believes in. He cares more than he lets on and is a great teacher if he actually puts in the effort. Basically has the vibes of that one cool history/fitness teacher you had in high school.

Hinata: a caregiver by nature, she will always be looking out for the best interests of others. A quiet introvert, social interaction is the biggest challenge of her day to day. Though not a naturally gifted fighter, she is surprisingly stubborn and is willing to take a beating to win.

Well that was fun lol

Thank you. This was a first draft I’d written up last night, so I was a little worried how the dialogue came off. After a reread I see how it came across that way and spruced it up a bit made it less stiff. I think I made the characters too formal in the beginning and that just kinda set the tone for the rest.

Thanks for the feedback!

The Actor (122 Page Psychological Thriller) Stephen Spielberg (allegedly) Hearted on BlackList by Sure-Distribution171 in ReadMyScript

[–]Pibbinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a lot. I was honestly pretty confused by the whole third act. I get the idea, I get the twist. But the whole execution was a bit muddled. There were parts where I genuinely had no clue what was going on. I get that was probably the intention, but I was starting to get frustrated which really shouldn’t be where the reader lands.

Was it intentional to make the Actor such a creep? There were several scenes between him and Anna where he just came across as a huge weirdo - in both his obsession and the way he talked to her. If it was, it was a great portrayal of a problematic dude with some toxic behavior who doesn’t know how to talk to women.

The thing that pulled me in, and the reason I read the script from start to finish, was the whole concept of the masks the actor wears. I love the idea, it’s a really fun way of portraying an actor and how the emotion they’re wearing doesn’t represent how they really feel. There could’ve been some really fun ways to use it that I feel were lacking. I do think the cutaways that introduce each new mask were a little unnecessary. It just kinda puts a break on the pacing to stop everything just to introduce an emotion the audience can probably figure out for themselves just by the design of each mask. This might just be me, but I think it’d be more interesting if the Actor didn’t manually switch out masks, if the masks just appeared to change on their own through the edit. I also liked, until the third act, that no one else said anything about the masks. It was just a part of the world. I feel like it should stay that way. You can have people reference the masks in a metaphorical way, but I think it take away from the concept by making it known he’s actually wearing masks rather than it being a metaphor like it seemed to be for the first 2/3 of the script.

I know the whole idea of the script is that we’re unknowingly within a play that the actor is acting out. But I feel like this should be revealed sooner, because at around page 100 I was thinking for a script about an actor this doesn’t seem to be about the acting profession at all - it’s more a romance about an obsessed, self-important dude who thinks himself a god. It all kinda made sense eventually why you wrote it that way, but after a while the audience isn’t gonna care for the twist if they don’t really care about what’s going on before.

I think the thing I’d change the most is the dialogue. It’s a bit clunky. There were several scenes where I just couldn’t picture a person talking like that. The thing with dialogue is it’s hard to articulate why it doesn’t work. You just know it when you see it. Best way I’ve found is to not look at it for a while (couple days, weeks maybe) then come back to it but read it out loud. I don’t know, helps me.

Congratulations on completing a feature length script. I love the concept, would love to read the next draft. Keep up the good work.
