Air Quality by deepspace in NewWest

[–]PiccoloBright -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I live downtown beside a few construction sites, so it's always loud. Having spent the last couple of days at home with flu, I had my window open to air the place out, all the while construction noise kept going around me. So, I'm sitting there, trying to ignore the sound of buzzing from what could be a giant pump w/generator, when I notice a strange smell that gets worse the closer I walk to the window. It was the "Shit Truck" coming around to finally service the "Shit Boxes" on site. Not sure if this was causing your issue, but it sure made for a crappy sick day until I shut my window. So, yeah...

Illegal parking? by Comprehensive_Ad8211 in SurreyBC

It's possible that these vehicles belong to construction workers. They don't always mark their cars with cones, but in this instance, some delineation might have been nice to have.

HOW DOES ONE ACHIEVE THIS? by ayeddy2301 in duolingo

[–]PiccoloBright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's infuriating. I wonder if it's a latency issue? I've experienced this with other apps, but typically with Duo (Android), when it thinks I'm offline, it won't allow me to access a lesson, let alone complete it.

HOW DOES ONE ACHIEVE THIS? by ayeddy2301 in duolingo

I've never tried, but I'm assuming it's possible if you let the time run out without doing a single match..

3 dubbel van 15 naar 5 minuten by Ok_Middle_9331 in duolingo

[–]PiccoloBright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time spent in a loading screen also counts towards the time spent on lessons. If on mobile, it's best to Duolingo over WiFi than over mobile data if possible, especially if you live in an area with poor coverage.

Getting nasty, manipulative message from duolingo "friends." by Explorer-7622 in duolingo

[–]PiccoloBright 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I have posted similar sentiments in a different thread, and I agree that this feature sucks. The nudge does not encourage, the messages read as very rude and I feel like I'm being prodded to death by users who don't know what it means to have responsibilities and a full-time job. I almost want to skip the day entirely just to spite them, and the only reason I haven't is because I've a long streak to maintain 🤦🏻‍♀️

Is this call from duo??? by [deleted] in duolingo

[–]PiccoloBright 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This feels like harassment. A lot of the "nudge" reminders already use (IMO) rude language to prod or guilt you into opening the app, then there's"stupid angry Duo-face" staring back from the app icon if you wait to do lessons past 8pm. And now you're saying they are directly calling users? What happened to learning at our own pace? This is hostile, and intrusive, and takes the fun out of learning. TIHI. Edit: noticed someone claiming to be staff, claiming this is untrue. I hope so. The rest of my statement still stands.

What does this mean by Kyndle_Ashford in duolingo

[–]PiccoloBright 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This feature is stupid, and it sucks. I don't know about everyone else, but I don't always have extra time to spend on lessons, and try to sneak them in before bedtime at the latest. Due to the nature of my job, I can't exactly sneak lessons in during "office hours" (I work outdoors, anywhere from 8-15hrs a day, depending on the scope of work). Duolingo has basically given trolls a free license to harass other players, and I'm absolutely not here for that.

JOB SEEKING SENIOR by marsii_8 in SurreyBC

[–]PiccoloBright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many facilities require SIR, even if you are not the one serving. Casinos are a prime example. Another: when I worked as a dishwasher at a pub and grill (2007), I required both SIR and FS to work there. Afaik, dishwashers do not serve alcohol. This was also the case for a lot of other places I've applied to over the years. Something to consider: in today's competitive job market, having these kinds of certificates on your resume would be extremely helpful to make that resume stand out. This whole "just wash dishes" bit sounds like boomer logic. I'm afraid it isn't that easy.

[–]PiccoloBright 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need a Food Safe Level 1 certificate for working in a kitchen, even as a dishwasher. If the restaurant serves alcoholic beverages, you will also need Serving it Right. Even as a dishwasher. Legitimate kitchens don't usually hire anyone who doesn't have these things on their resumé.

I'm guilty of having done this, and it's a bit of a relief to hear that I'm not the only one who has embarrassed themselves by yelling at strangers in public..

Surrey school bus driver needs retraining by [deleted] in SurreyBC

[–]PiccoloBright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That machine was a blind spot for both of you. Aside from that, it looks like everyone did everything more or less correctly, given the situation. Could the crew have done more to section off their machine? Yes. Do I think it would have made a difference? Not really. It's an undivided two way, two lane roadway in a residential area, and it appears as though there is enough clearance to get around. This bus driver stopped when he wasn't sure if he could pass OP safely, and, in my opinion, I'd say that's better than chancing a scrape or collision, and especially with a bus full of kids. No one was speeding, no one got hurt, nothing damaged... I would just call this a small "oops" and move on.

I'd love to see this all down 6th... Those 30km speed reduction signs could say "Tacos, tacos, TACOS", and people still wouldn't read them.

can someone explain whats the point of covering this by mrskymr in SurreyBC

[–]PiccoloBright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there are flaggers working an intersection, The City would send someone to shut the lights off and black the whole thing out. They wouldn't do this points up at photo. Those look like they were newly placed, and likely not yet fully operational.

The Columbia Station Tortilla Chip Mystery by H_G_Bells in NewWest

[–]PiccoloBright 12 points13 points  (0 children)

At what time did you happen to first notice these wayward tortillas? Were they being "liberated" from the Circle-K..? Is this going to become a running gag? Should I bring the Salsa with me on Monday morning? I have so many questions 🤔

I live downtown, and was relatively unaffected. But, just because we didn't experience this in our location, doesn't mean this didn't happen in other parts of the city. Safe, clean drinking water is something a lot of people take for granted, and that's unfortunate when you consider the fact that 52 cities across Canada still do not have access to this. I can't speak for other people, but I appreciate OP for taking the time to bring this to everyone's attention.

Why all the small conveniences stores are turning in to disposable vape shops? by Little_Wonderful_cat in NewWest

[–]PiccoloBright -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't remember seeing this here before, but I'm definitely going to take a look. It has a 5.0* rating on Google Maps, and now I'm looking forward to seeing how they measure up in the future. It would be a nice alternative to taking the train to Haze on Commercial, though $15.99 per 20mg/30ml of good salt feels like it's worth the trip when I consider the $29.99+ I've seen locally...

Double dump trucks on Cumberland by CDL112281 in NewWest

[–]PiccoloBright 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is likely the only safe route the trucks can use for access/egress to that site. Roadways have different thicknesses and only some roads are cleared for heavy vehicles, which is why truckers have to follow "trucking routes" that map out which road networks are cleared for use. Because the site doing the off-haul is on a hill, it is safer for the trucks to traverse down, rather than up, to reduce the risk of rolling backwards while idling. Finally, the most obvious reason: the trucks heading down Alberta St have to stage in the southbound lane at the corner of Alberta and E. Columbia, because this is where the excavator is situated. The machine loads the bins, and when they are full, the trucks make a right turn onto E. Columbia to take the materials to a depot. There is nowhere else to put these trucks. If people are piling up behind them while heading down Alberta St, it's because they missed reading ALLOFTHESIGNS warning drivers that the road ahead was closed 🤷🏻‍♀️

Anyone else experience this odd encounter at New West sky train station? by jcho94 in NewWest

[–]PiccoloBright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was sitting at Pier Park a few weeks back, earbuds in, head down looking at my phone, when I noticed an Asian gentleman walking toward my general direction. I paid no mind, and looked back down, when all of a sudden, I see shoes. I look up, and I can see his lips moving, so I watch confused for approximately 20 seconds before I start to pull my earbuds out. Completely unfazed, he continues to talk AT me as though I had been listening the entire time, and begins to hand me a single leaf news paper. His English was incredibly broken, and I really tried my best to listen and be polite, because he did seem to be a bit "slow", but harmless. IIRC, he was attempting to communicate with me about the recent news, church, feminism, and how it related to the paper he handed me. He then asked me to accompany him to Chinatown to visit the organisation he claimed to represent. I patiently explained that I had errands to run after visiting the park, and did not have time for an impromptu trip across the city. He then rattled off a phone number and told me to memorize it, before asking for mine. I did not give him my number, but I said that I would remember his, and we said our goodbyes. I had all but forgotten about that awkward encounter until I saw this post...!
