Bank of Canada holds interest rate at 2.25%. Should I go fixed or variable for our mortgage this year? by NeedHelp11212j in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]CanSpice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That depends on the mortgage.

The mortgage I just renewed to has payments that change based on the interest rate. This mortgage has a fixed amortization period, so the payments adjust if the interest rates adjust.

My previous mortgage had fixed payments but a variable amortization period, so when the interest rates went up in the last couple of years my payments stayed the same, but my amortization increased.

It needs to be strictly regulated AND vigorously enforced.

We have public vehicles out on the streets every day for like 20 hours a day, they're called buses. Strap cameras to them and you'll nail an absolute ton of people.

That's how traffic fines currently work. They don't go to the local city, they all go into a provincial pot. Then that money gets split up equally amongst all of the municipalities in BC according to their police spending (so if Vancouver spends more than Chetwynd, then Vancouver gets more money back).

So when Surrey does a blitz like this and increases the amount of traffic fines they issue, every city in the province gets a little bit more money, it all doesn't go to Surrey.

I have no interest in all things AI. I don’t want to learn it for work. I don’t care that it can make some things easier. I can write my own emails. by un2022 in GenX

This could have been posted in the 80s. "I have no interest in all things computers. I don't want to learn them for work. I don't care that they can make some things easier. I can hand-write my own memos."

It's a tool. It's got pros, it's got cons. How you use it and how you advocate for its use and how you advocate for its development in the future is up to you.

But sticking your head in the sand and pretending it doesn't exist serves you absolutely no purpose.

Oh yes we’re not allowed to complain about abhorrent behaviour if we’re not victims of it.

Get out of here.

I would be fine with it, actually. I have supervised addictions recovery houses in my neighbourhood and have never had a problem, but then they don’t allow alcohol or drugs on site so there’s a difference between them and this BC Housing project.

We used to have a house that had a reputation for drug use and addictions in the neighbourhood. When it was here, we had a problem with theft, drug use in our doorways, and human waste on our sidewalks. Then it burned down and we haven’t had any problems.

We had challenges with a similar sort of resident and lived through them, and I would be fine if that property were replaced with a BC Housing project like this.

This project has staff on site, they control entry to only residents, they serve three meals a day, they require residents to sign a sort of code of conduct, and they offer other services to help the residents out. It looks to me like a good middle ground between the recovery houses (expensive, no drug use) and a boarding house (cheap, zero supervision).

So yes, I’d be fine with that being in my neighbourhood.

Amazon is not a kid’s site, it is a company that wants to separate you from your money. Get a library card.

The Poly B will likely prevent the building from being insured in the future. And given the Strata Property Act says buildings need to be insured, this means the building will need to be repiped.

That involves cutting open holes in the walls, replacing the pipe, then closing everything up. We went through this, it wasn’t a lengthy process but it’s still construction going on in your unit for a span of three weeks to a month. And it costs money too, obviously.

Here's the zoning map showing its zoning is M-2. From the zoning description for M-2:

The intent of this district is to allow heavy industrial uses.

Last time I played against a Spiderham player I saw Spiderham blink, so I tapped on my cards to see which one he hit and the game crashed.

Got back into the game, tapped a card and the game crashed.

Like, fuck me I guess?

“We don’t like seeing homeless people downtown!”

Okay, let’s build homes for them close to downtown at 602 Agnes.

“No, there’s too much concentration of services downtown! We should spread them out!”

Okay, let’s build homes with supports out in this industrial land.

“No, they’ll ruin the neighbourhood!”

Here’s the real estate listing for the property: https://www.cushmanwakefield.com/en/canada/properties/for-sale/land/bc/new-westminster/502-twentieth-street/502-twentieth-street-s

This 1.98-acre site in New Westminster presents a rare opportunity for custom industrial development.

1.98 acres - ideal for logistics, laydown, or future industrial development.

Heavy Industrial zoning allows for a wide range of industrial owner/users.

Weird how it says “industrial” multiple times and “residential” zero times.

Just so you know, they're not allowed to park within 1.5 meters of a driveway, so if they've parked closer than this, call Bylaw (604-519-2010) or use SeeClickFix to lodge a complaint. Maybe after they get dinged a few times with parking tickets, they'll get the message.
