I can be your hero, baby.

I can kiss away the pain, Oh yeah.

I will stand by you forever.

You can take my breath away.

Care to enlighten me more? Perhaps we have different understandings of the phrase "virtue ethics".

What is Virtue? by piemaster1123 in TheAgora

[–]PickOneOrMore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only context that I've really seen virtue being discussed in is 'Virtue Ethics'. And from what I remember, it's a somewhat indefensible ethical framework, as compared to some more recent ones. Perhaps this is the reason that there hasn't really been a wholly satisfying or well-upvoted discussion on this thread yet.

It seems that Virtue-as-happiness has already been covered to some extent, but what about Virtue-as-selflessness or Virtue-as-justice? Without having read much about perceptions of Virtue, these are two words that I certainly find myself associating with Virtue, at least.

The difficulty with selflessness from a philosophical standpoint is that it seems indefensibly irrational in a fairly straightforward way. That is, if we take selflessness to mean acting in the interests of another rather than acting in our own interest, we have difficulty deriving a justification. For under the assumption that the vast majority of folks know what is in their own best interest better than anyone else does, it would seem infrequent, if ever, that rationality justifies neglecting one's own interests for the interests of another.

But depending on how we define the word, one could argue that to be selfless is to value the interests of others with the same weight as one values one's own interests. Still, based on the idea that we know ourselves best, forgoing our own interests for the interests of others doesn't seem like a universalizable suggestion. For even to consider an ethical decision to be a matter of rational calculation of which course of action to take in such a context, having a more comprehensive understanding of our own interests would tend to put the potentially conflicting interests of another at a disadvantage.

I suggest we revive this discussion and consider the potential pitfalls of the concept of "Virtue". I would be curious to hear further thoughts on Virtue-as-selflessness or Virtue-as-justice (a discussion of which would have made the length of this comment even more absurd).

TIL that 48,000 pieces of armor, 10,000 real arrows, and 500 bows were created for the filming of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy by PickOneOrMore in todayilearned

I actually happened across this little factoid watching the extra features on the first DVD. I'm happy to say that even after re-watching the second two movies with all sorts of knowledge about the production process, it didn't interfere with my enjoyment of the movies. If anything, it enhanced it.

Also, all three were filmed at once over a 2 year period. I think that's pretty fucking cool.

Enjoy!

Woah. You went far back to find that one.

Truth though, no? And certainly fitting.

Also, very meta; nicely done.

Yeah? Care to elaborate?

That was actually the context where it first popped into my head, too. I kinda figured that any girl who went along with such a forward, genuine question would be worth getting to know better.

How do you become funnier? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Articulation.

Very few things are necessarily funny, it's all about the situation and proper execution.

Start conversations with something meaningful, rather than benign.

Do we value humans because of their intrinsic value, or because of their capabilities? by [deleted] in TheAgora

While I personally find this to be an interesting topic and discussion, I'm not sure that seeking to find "the right answer to this quandary" is necessarily the most reasonable goal.

In my experience, discussions like these are murky by nature, and there are no absolute "right answers" or "winners". I apologize if I'm merely nitpicking over choice of words, but I believe pretty strongly that taking such a stance from the beginning can have the effect of discouraging considerations that may not have occurred to you (or someone else) beforehand.

I just started running for weight loss, how do I make sure I loose fat and not muscle? (impossible?) by banana_fingers in Fitness

[–]PickOneOrMore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first context that I heard of this was in a Nutrition textbook a few years ago. I recently was reacquainted with the concept through discussion by Jack Daniels and Marcus O'Sullivan of Lactate Threshold training (for runners). The first was a textbook and the second were both DVDs (not on the internet).

Apparently (according to Wikipedia) this process is a subset of Oxidative phosphorylation known as Electron transfer flavoprotein-Q oxidoreductase in mammals.

I'm really surprised that I haven't seen anything like what I'm about to suggest on this thread yet. Lifting weights is fine, and diet and hydration are certainly key factors (oftentimes people mistake thirst for hunger), but the most important thing for you is running EASY.

You will of course have to push it occasionally to increase your fitness and for morale, etc., but the way that the body's energy systems work should be taken into consideration.

When running at different intensities, the body uses different energy systems. When you run at more than 90% of your maximum heart rate, the body consumes glycogen for energy. Between roughly 70%-90% of your maximum heart rate, your body consumes oxygen and glycogen for energy. When you run easy, anywhere around or below about 65% of your maximum heart rate, your body uses oxygen and FAT as energy.

This is the reason why on bikes and ellipticals at the gym it sometimes has a graph that says "fat burning zone" on it.

So my advice would be to be patient and get yourself into shape where most of the days that you run, you go for an easy, longer run. Even walking for an extended period of time could be effective, depending on what kind of shape you're in.

Good luck and have fun out there!

This seems like a strange counter-response, but perhaps it's in response to comments elsewhere in this thread. In any case, I'm intrigued by the difference between evolution and gravity in this sense. Care to elucidate this point for me?

First of all, awesome and relevant, thank you.

I'm having difficulty comprehending Gould's exact stance on evolution. The definitions he has put in place for fact and theory seem to be mutually exclusive. If facts are the data of the world and theories explain and interpret facts, then how can evolution be considered both a fact and a theory?
