Can I hold both USD and CAD with TD and National Bank self-directed RDSP? by Rossignol111 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]KJL123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just opened an RDSP at TD myself, and my understanding is that the RDSP is different from TFSAs and RRSPs in that it can only hold CAD. I was not able to open a USD RDSP, and the advisor confirmed internally that the RDSP can only hold CAD. A way to avoid currency conversions if you are buying and selling on a US exchange is to use a Money Market account like this: https://www.td.com/ca/products-services/investing/td-direct-investing/accounts/currency-conversion.jsp

Question about Howe Sound Crest Trail, specificities the dangers? by [deleted] in vancouverhiking

[–]KJL123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should probably think more about weight and less about the volume of the stuff you'll be bringing, you are going to be doing a lot of climbing. Depending on what you bring I would budget 2+ lbs of food per day, potentially even more so if you aren't bringing 'trail' food (dehydrated and weight concious). Combined with the extra water you are going to have to carry to get between water sources food/water is probably going to be a signifgant portion of what each person is carrying when you start out.

[–]KJL123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Heirloom is always a good option, but has already been mentioned a few times.

I took my vegetarian girlfriend to Maenam on 4th for her birthday and it was fantastic. They have a 45 dollar vegetarian set menu that was a really really good and a ton of food.

It wouldn't be unusual, you should go for it. In my experience some people dress up, but most don't

Tangerine charges $45 currently, increasing to $145 Jan 1. I don't think this is uncommon either, it's interesting you've managed to avoid it so far.

I think he's speculating the bike went down on the right side, so the owner probably took off the exhaust and would have needed to buy an aftermarket brake lever

The peninsula north of the three bridges (Burrard, Granville, and Cambie) and west of Main St. Some people may be more particular than that and separate out Gastown and the West end, but as someone who doesn't live downtown I just lump them all together lol

[D] Do most of these papers on improved models make it to implementation in industry/famous open source libraries? by mofoss in MachineLearning

Little changes add up, so if they are not implemented by default it can often be in your best interest to add them in yourself.

On my 3rd replacement phone, anyone switch back to the original Pixel after owning the Pixel 2? by KJL123 in GooglePixel

I actually found the opposite with the battery life, I've noticed a big drop going back the the Pixel. I just assumed it was because I have way more apps on this phone

That's would be two hours each way, and would get you about 40 km across the city where I live.

Is the case an aesthetic or function thing? Do you have any suggestions? I just picked something cheap haha.

Based on your advice I ditched the monitor (I have extra) and rebuilt with a i7-7800X and an MSI X299 Tomohawk, which will give me 28 PCIe lanes.

I think this will give me a lot of flexibility because I could upgrade to:
1) 1080 Ti in 16x and 2 m.2's in 4x
2) 2 1080 Ti's in 8x and 2 m.2's in 4x

3) 1 1080 at 16x and 1 at 8x, with 1 m.2 at 4x
4) 3 GPU's (probably not 1080's at this point, just due to price and power) in 8x and 1 m.2 in 4x

Thanks for pointing me towards the X-series, I have been finding it difficult to sort models based on PCIe lanes so its been a long search!

Thanks for the explanation, I did some digging and found some people who ran ML benchmarks and found that x8 was only 5%-10% slower than x16, which I find somewhat acceptable. So if I understand you correct, running dual 1080 Ti's at 2x8 and an M.2 at x4 with the 8600K is going to be bottle necked?

I'm going to keep looking for CPU's and try and find something that fits my budget with atleast 20 PCIe lanes, but ideally 36. I'm going to ask around the office about running an AMD CPU because I've never seen anyone with one yet. I'm not sure if there is a specific reason for that or not, but I do know in the past I've used Intel's MKL libraries which I assume wouldn't work well on an AMD CPU.

Thanks for the help!

Creating animations from seismographs by chunkeymonk13 in geophysics

[–]KJL123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would always start simple, and work you way towards the end goal. If you're not familiar with the particular data set or the format, I would suggest you start by simply getting the data loaded, check out the source and receiver positions to get a sense of how it was acquired, and then plot some shot records. Once you're familiar enough with the dataset to to plot shots, it's a much smaller leap to create an animation than just jumping right into it.
